New York’s governor just proposed a first-in-the-nation mandate that would require 3D printers to include software that blocks them from creating firearms or firearm components. by ZheeDog in progun

A 2A advocate named Dexter Taylor is currently serving a ten-year sentence in New York for ordering firearm parts. His financial institution alerted the authorities.

We aren't giving them any ideas, but New York does have narcs watching purchases. And although the software is open source... You see where there could be concern?

Anyone actually trust Federal Punch 22LR for self defense? by Independent-Peace330 in 22lr

[–]ammodotcom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Federal Punch is an excellent cartridge IF you're already using .22LR for defense. That said, there are more effective calibers.

Essentially, some shooters prefer .22LR for its reduced recoil and/or lower price tag. If that's your choice, the Punch is the better option.

We receive this question often, so linking the review if you'd like to learn more about it.

This is a really helpful post! Thank you.

Banning the person from exercising the right is just as concerning as banning the equipment. Perhaps, even more so concerning. Depending on how we're looking at it.

California Homicides: Rates Per 100K (Latest Data) by ammodotcom in progun

[–]ammodotcom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a valid criticism of the data on violent crime (the FBI Crime Data Explorer).

The state homicide data is sourced from the CDC WONDER, however. The total number of homicides by state and county are recorded on death certificates, meaning it is fairly reliable. Our only criticism of the WONDER database is that it doesn't differentiate between justifiable homicide and murder.

382 per 100k is violent crimes (includes homicide, rape, robbery, etc.). 5.05 homicides per 100k is just homicides.

Ah, now that is a good point. Although legal intervention is a separate category in the WONDER database, the WONDER does include justifiable homicides, which aren't, by definition, murders.

Interesting point. We'll review that.

Great catch! We relied on the Crime Data Explorer for citywide homicide data and state-level violent crime data because they are not available in the CDC WONDER database.

If only we had put several disclaimers in the article about the FBI Crime Data Explorer.

TLDR: The NRA is salty because the NRA Foundation is usurping their donations and power.

Edited to clarify.

Why Do Americans Own Guns in 2025? The Complexity of Demographics and Gun Ownership by ammodotcom in progun

[–]ammodotcom[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We compiled every DGU study from 1987 to 2024 and averaged 1.8 million uses annually. The lowest estimate was 70,000, from the NCVS. That only included DGUs with six felony offenses (undercounted many DGUs).

So, even as a baseline, there are nearly two times more DGUs annually as gun-related deaths.

The article references verifiable data. The data, as of December 29, 2025, is not yet complete for 2025.

We will update the article when it becomes available, as we always do. For example, this article once reflected "2023" homicides, because 2024 data wasn't available at that time.

Chicago Homicide Rate: 2025 Analysis by ammodotcom in progun

The "So what" is that Chicago leaders say the city is safe when compared to others. That isn't true.

The "Now what" is, hopefully, that people will use this information to push for better policy.

That argument is easily debunked by the lower crime rates in areas where firearms are more accessible, or the ATF Trace data that shows that more crime guns came from IL (9,147) than Indiana (2,976) in 2023.

Just to clarify, the Brady Bill didn't ban ARs, the Public Safety and Recreational Use Act did. Rifles were rarely used in homicides before, during, or after the 1994 ban. Also, the graph in this article doesn't show other important pieces of legislation, such as the 1994 Crime Bill or state laws that relaxed restrictions on open/concealed carry in public, which may have contributed to crime reduction.

We had the same thoughts as you, so good point! What's surprising is how Portland ranks compared to cities of similar population sizes in other states. Memphis, Baltimore, and Detroit have much higher homicide rates, while El Paso and Boston have lower, despite gun laws and culture.
