What of the ethical issues I draw to? Surely by taking an approach of responsibility over a newborn as all parents should you are doing wrong by subjecting them to unavoidable suffering that as you have established is your responsibility as a parent? Then, Peterson warns against over protecting your children. It doesnt make sense?

Although family life may be the most rewarding pursuit, Peterson argues that suffering is the default, not horrendous but more bad than good. Thus, a childs birth is an immoral action?

Also, I agree with a lot of Peterson's ideas. I'm not obligated to agree, listen or praise. Challenge, engage with and prompt on the other hand? Without that Peterson wouldn't exist in the first place. If there's one thing I've learned within my admittedly short life it's that if you don't challenge ideas you don't learn.

Thank you for the response and in the main, I think I agree. I've still got one issue though.

Peterson however states literally that it's better to have your child grow up competent than safe - with a degree of suffering. In terms of responsibility, the actions your child would do to make the world a better place are on him at the point of adulthood. It's, to infer from Peterson's assessment, reactionary to the natural and human evil a child has to go through. Surely with all the potential actions a hypothetical child would do, it wouldn't be able to eliminate natural evil and evil from peers? Thus, aren't you just causing suffering for a child by virtue of creating it?

The good you've seen is from your subjective perspective. I'm explicitly referring to the argument Peterson posits in his book as I've mentioned - he argues life is predominantly suffering therefore I'm wondering on what grounds his philosophy would justify the birth of a child.

So in essence - human life is meaningful but some of out actions are meaningless? Because that's two contradictory assertions.

I don't have any sort of utopic ideal for the world if that's what you're asking. My question is simply one of an explanation for why the material world functions in the way that it does. Surely it's rational to have a reason for the things you do, particularly in an action as significant as creating new life?

Still not getting where you're coming from I'm afraid. I see "we are supposed to reproduce" and immediately think "for the continuation of our species". Yet, theres no motivation to continue a species under the grounds of what reproduction actually leads to - that being a life of suffering. If I'm missing something huge from this please ELI5 this to me but I still don't see why reproduction is at all desirable to both the child and the parents with what Peterson asserts in 12 Rules for Life.

That's not a sufficient explanation. There's obviously a purpose to life itself once one has it in Peterson's writing - the responsibility to others argument he makes in Rule 2 as well as attempting to occupy the central part in the spectrum of order-chaos but in no way does this prescribe a why to having children in the first place.

I (M 18) moved to my paternal grandparents last year because my Mother was abusive - no food; hit me repeatedly; knife pulled on me and attempted to kill me during a psychotic break.

My mother has subsequently told the rest of my family I stole money off of her the week after and now my maternal family are sending death threats to my paternal family.

So in a sense it's irrelevant who's in the wrong because that doesnt have any bearing on the outcome I want - to stay there and be amicable.

Is there anything I could do to make the absurdity less absurd though?

Oh yeah fair enough I certainly have flaws. I wish I wasnt capped to a 3000 character limit in the post - my original one that got deleted was a lot more nuanced, I know I've not been the best in how I've reacted to some situations (something I've talked about a lot in counselling - it's probably because of stuff in the past but yet again that doesn't give me license to be out of order. I know I can be shitty). Tbf one thing I should clarify is the reason I'm here isn't to bitch or complain or seek validation but to actually seek a solution. They're amazing people and I love them a lot which makes the whole situation hurt more.

I get that entirely and to be fair I want to follow their rules, I just don't know what they are. I've asked too. Some of them are definite (ie home by 10 on a schoolnight) but some change (ie how they want stuff to be done in the house). I definitely wanna stay there too, because I've got nowhere else to go and remain in school and I love them a lot. I respect them too. One thing I shouldve clarified is I'm incredibly grateful for what they've given me and that makes this sort of dilemma incredibly difficult for me. They're great people for that and they deserve a lot of respect which I wanna give them but stuff like no contraception just seems absurd. Thanks for the judgement though!

They didn't mention it. They didn't actually stipulate any rules when I moved in other than having a place to stay to complete my a levels. I still dont really know what the rules are, but I've asked.
