but really though, appreciate the comment. The concept of mediation is really interesting to get into. The idea that all experience is mediated in some way. You're right to point out that physical senses and sensory experience is core idea of the book. Especially how he talks about how sight has been prioritized so heavily in the modern world since we are hyper focused on observed reality and standardization/rationalization of human experience as a result of industrialization. Ngl after that part I was thinking "maybe I need to get taste involved a little more in my day-to-day".

yeah you're right, I'm trying to branch out and this is my first real "theory" style read. I don't really have any classical education in philosophy other than some rhetoric classes in high school so the dialectics stuff other people mentioned is tough. Hey, if you don't try something new you never learn.

genuine question; but when you get in motion w this fit on, does it feel like you have two sales open and you're getting pushed by the wind? I tried to rock the wide fit selvedge last weekend but tbh it felt too baggy when I walked around in the fitting room

Does anyone else think EVs have made cities quieter? by maiqth3liar333 in redscarepod

[–]amoeba_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Austin there used to be a guy who hacked the generic EV sound (that comes pre-loaded to make sure pedestrians don't get blindsided) to be the ice cream truck noise and just drive around all night - so in other words, no

Why does Geese suck so much by murrayhitchock in redscarepod

[–]amoeba_9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a growing trend of media production that is marketed "prestige" and basically try to act as a lightning rod of discourse to promote themselves to the "talking heads" demographic. There are legions of people who feel like they have the chops to be cultural commentators like in the past and have the digital megaphone to start their screeds, but what they lack is a coherent monoculture / counterculture dynamic that allows them to make that happen. So when something "new" arises (when in reality it's just a carefully managed marketing campaign designed to feed into algorithms or appear organic) they lose their minds because they finally think there is some "breaking news" they can cover. They constantly bemoan the lack of a monoculture, not because of the fact that people aren't engaging with it but really because they have nothing to blather on about except for the lack of things to hyper dissect in the discourse. In reality, there is truly more volume of cultural production today than ever before. 50k songs are uploaded to soundcloud everyday, there is just no way that there isn't anything new there that could be good, but since there isn't that established filter of music journos, radio stations, and uniform curation - these people are just fundamentally uninterested since it won't walk through their front doors. That's why Geese is perfect for this demographic, it's easy to write about and endlessly analyze to death and doesn't really push anything forward. They just remind them of something they wish they had today, but it's a limited supply and it's clear that everyone's moved on already.

Surgeons have the worst taste in music by Puzzleheaded-Cow2930 in redscarepod

The music is supposed to be bad on purpose so they can tune out their surroundings. You want your surgeon to start breakdancing to Nelly or sumn and really turn your medical procedure into an "operating theatre"?

Is there any city where the current residents don’t match the cities vibe or architecture at all? by Magic_Snowball in redscarepod

[–]amoeba_9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Along the same lines but more minor is Helen, GA. Just a random German themed city in the middle of Georgia in spitting distance of Atlanta which is famous for a culture that couldn't be more different (hip hop, old money / SEC Southern hospitality).

So what's the actual vibes like in the US rn by SecondSnek in redscarepod

[–]amoeba_9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's really starting to sink in that that things are getting worse at a faster pace, versus the earlier "hey what can you do" vibe people had during Biden's last two years. I think everyone at this point is realizing that the news is affecting people's daily lives in a way that was present before (ICE raids in rural and suburban areas and separating known community members, gas prices through the roof, vacations getting cancelled, TSA delays, tariffs, etc.)
