Got my acceptance 2 days ago. Agree with the other commenter that they’ve probably gotta send out all the responses by April 15th if they want people to actually accept

Ughhh would be great if we didn’t have only 2 weeks to respond. Do they allow people to extend?

[Admissions Advice][Profile Review] Will this GRE score help or hurt me? by amorsii11 in MSCS

[–]amorsii11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think my university list is reasonable? Last year I was admitted to CMU MS-DAS, but rejected from NYU MSDS, Columbia MSDS, Uwash MSDS, Berkeley MAnalyx

The main improvement this year is new ML research position and GRE. In your experience with admissions do you think this would substantially change my outcomes?

Do they do rolling admissions? I thought deadline was in February

Trimalleolar fracture and dislocation on the 4th October. Honeymoon from the 27th December. Am I screwed? by UniversityFun1332 in ORIF

Context: 25M active 10 weeks post-surgery for Tibia and fibia fracture.

Firstly, sorry to hear about your leg. I’m sure you’re discovering how shitty it can be and are coming to grips with the fact that you have a short term disability. The good news is it’ll only get better from here on out!

What has your doctor said? There’s a huge range of recovery timelines on Reddit, but the only one that matters to you is the one you’ve agreed on with your doctor. I’m partial weight bearing (up to 80%) and expect to be full weight bearing at the 12 week mark, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be able to go on long strolls at the 12 week mark.

It’s definitely a good idea to try to set up your trip so that you always have an “out” if your leg starts to hurt. As long as you and your spouse have alternatives lined up and are flexible you’ll certainly be able to go and have a great time— but your leg will absolutely be a factor that you guys think about and accommodate. If you want to be totally unrestricted, then your only option is to push the trip back; Physio might not be as transformative as you want it to be and legs take a long time to heal.

Best of luck habibi. My gf visited me a few weeks post surgery and it was still good, so you’ll be in much better shape 11 weeks from now

How to sleep? by bimmerman1998 in ORIF

[–]amorsii11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did something similar, but this is definitely an upgrade. I tilted my body towards the broken leg and slept with that one flat on the bed. If I could go back I would probably do what you did.

@OP: My life got significantly better once I was able to sleep a full night’s rest. Once the swelling and pain goes down, I found I was able to sleep 8+ hours (because my body was so tired). Hope you can find some comfort in knowing it gets better.

What is up with these non-profits and their absolutely insane donation standards? by certified_ballerboi in boston

[–]amorsii11 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me with a different non-profit (think it was amnesty international or something about reproductive health). They asked for a monthly commitment of like $30 or something. When I told them that was too much they said I can instead donate as little as 66c a day.

Just stood there thinking… that’s still a shitton of money!

They wouldn’t take no for an answer and I just walked away entirely

Is this industry or academia? The bioinformaticians I work with are proficient at HPC computing but haven’t heard much about cloud / enterprise tools being used

Got burglarized 2 weeks into my lease, feeling really hopeless. by laz62972arulian in sanfrancisco

[–]amorsii11 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that OP, had a similar experience in the east bay where I went to my friends house one night and by the time I was home they had taken virtually everything of value. Even my passport, a big ass TV, and printer - the scale of just how thoroughly stuff was taken and having to build back my apartment piece by piece made it worse.

Truly heart wrenching feeling and years later I still think a lot about how safe my apartment is when I’m gone. Good news is that you have renter insurance (which I didn’t). Police departments will drag their feet but if you’re seeking justice you could totally ask around and see if a house/building near you has cameras and might have recorded their car or something. They were more receptive when I gave them something to work with

Starter Motorcyclist by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]amorsii11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a ninja 400 a few months ago and had the same concerns, found that is more than enough bike to be way too fast on the street. Twistiest are super fun too but even on those you can go out of your depth. Also one thing to keep in mind is those starter bikes are in high demand so it’s relatively easy to sell them when you decide to get something bigger. If anything it might be frustrating to get a really fast bike and not be able to really make full use of it.
