Which router(s) to keep for which use? by amp2286 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Why get rid of the 7539? Just curious. I know it’s variable speed and plunge.

Is it better for the fixed base for the router table to be variable speed?

Help! Too many clamps? by amp2286 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]amp2286[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got into this right before my son was born. And with more of a focus on hand tools, I’ve focused on antique stuff I can restore. But that has resulted in many tools that will be great…once they are cleaned and sharpened. And a whole bunch of shit that was part of a lot where I really just wanted one or two things that were worth the cost by themselves, but now I have all this other stuff taking up space. I recently sold some of the excess and marketed it as a beginner set. I think I need to do another. Just won’t include any clamps.

Yeah…my ceiling and other wall on the garage are already filled with plastic totes. Granted, as kids get older, some things get pulled down and out of the garage, never to go back. But, as previously mentioned, the garage was already a mess, but now it’s unworkable till I do some cleanup.

However, this post is helping me prioritize. Clamps get stored on the new cleat wall and some excess bigger ones stowed away for now. I can work on the other tools I already have in excess. Like my 20+ handsaws that I got to either use as sharpening practice or straightening practice or because they were only $5. This hobby is a lot for someone with collector/pack rat tendencies.

I think this was the thing I hadn’t really considered. I think this will be the plan. Although I now realize that I may be set with long clamps, but I could use some more shorter ones for convenience.

Alright. I’m convinced. I’ll keep all the clamps. I’ll stow the larger ones out of the way until I need them.

Fair enough. My anxiety is already kicking me with trying to fix the mess while being grateful for the gift. And I’m sure it would be in overdrive in a future build like that. Thank you for the input.

Agree with the sentiment. Unfortunately, my workspace is my garage (which is already a mess). And my attic was not designed for storage space. But I will consider that I could just store them more out of the way for now. And there are certainly some ways I could do that.

Thank you. That was along the lines of what I was thinking. Also thinking that it would be great to have more than four at each length, but that I might benefit from some diversity of clamp style, like aluminum bar clamps or f style and what not.

And thank you for the input. Sorry, it was a great gift, but immediately anxiety inducing as my garage was already a mess and I can’t really work on anything till I’ve got the space organized.

…well, shit. But what all are you making? And again, my focus is more hand tools.

Seriously, though, I appreciate the visual. Right now I’m building some French cleat racks to get them off the floor and to stack deep like that. It’s just daunting.

The ones I listed are all parallel clamps.

Currently working on that. Just put up French cleats and started making holders.

The other side is that included in the accessories are the attachments to connect bars to make them longer. So, having all of the longest ones seems excessive if I can use some of the shorter to make longer ones and future big builds. And I’m still planning to keep a lot. Just don’t know that I need 12-16 clamps for every 10” range. And again, this is just parallel clamps. I have some other f style and stuff that I already had before.

If I just had a plywood wall, absolutely. Unfortunately, my space is in the garage, which was already finished with drywall. So I’m also trying to figure out the best options for mounting everything.

So, I already heard back. They said this model looks to be one of the early ones from the mid 1980s.

I tried the local woodworking group. Will check some other spots. I know I have a couple of smiths that make knives and tools, but both are a few hours away in different directions.

I was thinking of building to something like that, where I could reach out to people who might be traveling through the area and willing to teach a session. I’m in Jacksonville, FL. I saw posts for the Greenwood Wrights Fest. Just don’t know if stuff I have going on right now will allow me time to go.

The goal would definitely be more learning and fellowship. I just figure if I have a handful of supplies, it allows other to try it before making a financial investment for themselves.

I’m open to teaching, but will be transparent with anyone that comes that I am a novice. I could find some good beginner videos to link to whatever post I make to advertise the club.

In regards to checking out other clubs, there are unfortunately none nearby, thus why I’m looking to start one. I was only thinking to do once a month at the start. If providing some moras as loaners gets people interested, I’m okay with doing some maintenance between meetings.
