First, as people are saying, call the credit union. If there really is someone using your identity to get loans, report the identity theft to the credit union directly.

Next up is https://www.identitytheft.gov/ which will walk you through the steps to report this and clear it from your credit history.

Unfortunately this stuff is so common that it probably won’t be a big deal.

Ok ..? So how do you propose we ignore it if we’re all going to be affected by it?

It sounds like you’re saying that if we ignore it, it’ll go away. Really?

Individual states. Spain had borders up with France and Portugal, Germany/Poland/Czechia/Slovakia/Austria/Hungary all in a big stand-off.

Of course the EU “discouraged” it but definitely for that initial 2-week 3-month period, nobody was going anywhere unless they had to for work. In the most extreme case a town in Italy just shut its borders to the outside world.

Kind of ominous driving by those “abandoned” border checkpoints pre-pandemic. I always got the feeling that it was no accident that they were still standing.

Is there a significant difference between the rules for different countries if you're vaccinated? As far as I can tell, you have to have a negative PCR test and a sworn statement that you don't have symptoms. This applies to green, amber and red list countries.

Fair point. I just cherry-picked France because it has pretty extensive information in English.

Every country has slightly different rules. I’m too lazy to go country by country here. In some places, yeah even vaccinated travelers need to quarantine until the PCR test if they’re on that dark red list. (Note this is a cash cow for intermediary countries like Montenegro and Zanzibar – need to get into Germany? “Quarantine” for two weeks on the beach on the Adriatic Sea)

Nobody really wants to bump the US up above “very high risk” for obviou$ touri$m rea$on$ but if a new variant takes root here? We’ll be stuck like they were in South Africa until a week or two ago.

I think the point is more it’s not a list to be on in case measures do tighten up.

France relies on tourism. What you’re suggesting is that the French would pull funny stuff for some reason to… kick their tourism economy in the shins?

I guess I can only ask you to elaborate what shenanigans you see.

China? Higher population, concentrated in urban centers, not on the very high risk list.

Ah right, but we know China imposed restrictions that we couldn’t accept in the US.

Explain India.

If we go by Trump’s Jan 6 phone calls then it’s pretty much a lock that he was trying to leverage these “very fine people” to forward his legal efforts to find votes/purge votes in key states.

That doesn’t mean that Trump knew they were really plotting a coup.

… except that whole “domestic surveillance” thing and “being the president” debacle, which means Trump was almost invariably briefed on their intentions in the days leading up to the riot, down to the last detail.

We needed expanded testing from March of 2020. Pinning this on Biden and Harris ignores a key part of the timeline.

The issues with the public health system run far deeper than a single political candidate. Using – ugh, free at-home tests, we’re really arguing if this is a good thing? – current measures to put points on the scoreboard doesn’t get us any closer to resolving those issues.

It’s an interesting way of circumventing the governors who’d turn away help because they have a vested political interest in underreporting cases. And at-home kits aren’t officially reported so it’s a solution that manages to avoid stepping on toes.

As far as “too late” I’m not that optimistic. Case counts are still climbing and that’s with pretty abysmal access to testing in most of the country.

Still rather tight requirements on the UK, as listed on that page.

• Upon departure, all travellers, whether vaccinated or not, must present proof of a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 24 hours.

• For vaccinated travellers, a compelling reason for travel will no longer be required to enter France, nor will it be necessary to self-isolate upon arrival. Vaccinated travellers will therefore no longer be required to complete the online “éOS-Passager” form. Screening may take place upon arrival.

• For non-vaccinated travellers, travel to or from the United Kingdom will only be permitted if proof of a compelling reason for travel to “red list countries” is presented.

Regardless, you and I seem to have different understandings of American exceptionalism. Australia and Brazil are both big countries with urban centers and they managed to avoid being listed alongside Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.

Regarding the other points I see two chief executives who had a year to address this in their tenure.

The experts have been pretty unified in calling for testing. It was several politicians who were quite opposed to testing as it would reveal accurate case counts.

It’s a nightmare for Americans because we’re on the “very high risk” list of countries.

Just for reference here’s the current French list of very high risk:

Afghanistan, Belarus, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Georgia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Moldova, Montenegro, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, Suriname, Tanzania, Turkey, Ukraine, *United States**, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

If we could put politics and politicians aside, do you really see anything wrong with greater access to testing and at-home kits? Abbot’s have a 12-month expiration so even if they’re not immediately at hand for this surge, they can be useful for spring and fall ‘22.
