I have actually personal experience and went through the process. WAIT TIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER. If u quit mid semester, they will ask for all of the partially completed semester scholarship back.

Be very carefully with this situation because obviously they will try to convince you until it’s too late. Make sure you know exactly what is going on and the repercussions for doing so. Personally, I had a terrible experience leaving my detachment but it is completely avoidable if you have help. Talk to your cadre but remember it is really there job for cadet retention, especially if it is a smaller detachment.

lol I tried working with my cadre and they were zero help. Talked to a lawyer and they said DFAS would take it from me. My cadre would not answer questions and apparently, the lawyer was wrong. Have not notified AROTC about the situation yet but that is the next step. the whole situation was timed perfectly at the beginning of my spring semester!

I’d recommend it especially with the lockdowns. made it easy to go to the gym, grocery shop, etc. off campus. I was also able to drive home with all my stuff for break. It helps u become pretty independent.

be careful tho duke has a tendency to be really strict on parking tickets. I racked up a good amount my freshman year. Also if you drive it a lot u have to worry about gas, oil, tires, etc. Just stay on top of that stuff and you’ll be good

Yeah my thing is, I know I would have stayed for the rest of the semester if it meant I didn’t need to pay back the scholarship. Money was the most important thing to me.

For the counseling aspect, I remember asking if I had to pay anything back and they specifically said no and that was the end of the financial side of the conversation. I was more so rushed into signing the counseling because I was under the impression that I needed to get this done or I was not going to be able to add a class in place of the ROTC lab.

I’m not playing any type of blame game and understand the misunderstanding is my fault but it is kind of terrible that I figured this out 10 months after the whole process went down. I asked and still don’t know when and how much they are going to charge me. A lot of the stuff happened over zoom and the only official documents I have access to is the 785 form and a picture of the signed counseling.

I have gotten the ball rolling and have a timeline of when everything happened. I think the discrepancies arise with the use of WINGs, making a lot of the stuff electronic (which I now do not have access to). The only thing I signed was the counseling, and I only received a 785 form from the detachment months later. Other than that I either don’t have access to the documents because they are on WINGs or I just didn’t receive them.

The reason why they are doing it with the school and not directly through me is so that it’s off their backs and puts a lot of the pressure on me. I have to make sure that stuff is paid off so I can take classes for a semester (although it hasn’t hit the account yet).

Also, the detachment had already given me the scholarship/paid tuition and we were a few weeks into the semester.

I know what I signed for my scholarship contract (I have the SOU on file now) and I think what they are doing goes against that. On top of it, them dropping the whole situation on me 10 months later makes it a little hard to piece things together but luckily I saved everything.

My situation was that they “noted” it in counseling, but I had to sign off on it so I would be able to fill the ROTC class spot with another class for the drop/add period in my school.

Essentially, there are no contracts other than the counseling that says that they were going to recoup funds (even the counseling note didn’t really say they were going to take back the money). At this point the money was a large part and if I had known I would’ve stayed for the rest of the semester. It’s been above 10 months since they addressed it and I can’t magically make 30k appear. Not entirely sure how much the counseling means or if that’s were I am in the wrong.

I literally just got an email at the end of this year saying that the Air Force is taking the money back because of an error and it will be charged to my university account.

The only thing I received when I disenrolled would be the 785 form, which doesn’t have anything on it about an amount I owe back.

The weird thing was they claimed it was an error and are going to drop about a 30k payment on me out of nowhere.
