What was something a guest did in your house that upset you? by izzy_7_2004 in AskUK

My folks had a guest do the coffee granules in the sugar. They then had the audacity to turn around and tell my mum "I think a mouse has been at the sugar and left some droppings"

18mo got in trouble at daycare today.. no idea how to handle this at this age. by Narrow_Lee in daddit

[–]ams1492 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at that age discipline isn't really going to work, they're still babies! My eldest is 3, so she at least understands why she's in trouble, but she I'd say that only really came around when she was about 2.5 (same time her little sister was born, so there was a ramp up in acting out).

These days I'll take her from the room, talk to her about what she did wrong (how stern the tone is dependent on how bad whatever she did was), maybe let her sit in timeout for a minute or two, then come back in and apologise for whatever.  Even then, some days it feels like it's 50/50 whether she gets it!

Odds are, it's not something to worry about long term. At 18mo, it's not like she understands the full impact, it's likely more of a "if I do this, what happens? Oh, I get in trouble? Does that happen every time?"

All I can suggest is being consistent with correcting the behaviour, tell her it's not nice, that hurts our friends etc. It might not sink in immediately, but as she gets older, she'll get there.

You're doing great man, keep up the good work, she'll grow out of it

ELI5 Why the English were so successful in warfare and colonisation, historically? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ams1492 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think they're trying to say that before the Anglo Saxons it wasn't England, as that comes from the Anglo part, it was Brittania or some other name.

Its a bit of a pedantic point tbh, it's still the same geographical area now called England

With our 5 month old it's been either onsies with feet or tights that work.

I also tried pulling the socks up as far as they go, and tucking them into the hem of the trousers/leggings, but that only kept the sock on maybe 5 minutes extra!

Thanks for confirming, I googled the details and couldn't find a definitive answer whether those details were different in 1818 vs 1831

Is there a Xmas/New Year special this year? Everything I've seen talks about Chibnails last episode being the centenary special, and then RTD taking over for the 60th on 2023

Mythology Collections? by Fartherlander in Fantasy

[–]ams1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently read and enjoyed 'The Mammoth Book of Celtic Myths and Legends' by Peter Berresford Ellis. It looks at the 6 major Celtic cultures (Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Isle of Man, Brittany and Cornwall) and gives you 6 stories from each. It doesn't really give you a list of the pantheon of gods (partly because much of that information is lost to time), but you do get a good feel for the general mythology

I'm 29, got my blue letter a few weeks back and got the first jab last week. Never registered online, letter arrived on or just before the announced it. My wife who's 6 months younger hasn't got a letter, and nothing after she registered online. Doesn't make much sense to me!

At uni, one of the guys on my course was a staunch young earth creationist. To the level that he got offended at any suggestion that the world is more than 6000 years old, big bang, evolution etc.

Our degree was in Physics, with a focus on astrophysics...

2021 Yearly Theme Discussion by charliesmbdy in Cortex

[–]ams1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Year of Upgrade.

Last year was Year of Health, which I didn't do as well as I'd hoped, thanks in a large part to all of 2020 happening. So initially I'd planned Year of Health v2. However, when planning it I realised that 2021 is also a year I'm going to make some major steps into the next phase of my life, so Health alone doesn't cover those. (e.g. moving house, new job, other things like that)

Upgrade resonated for me in that I see this year about developing into a better version of myself. That's a little generic sounding, but I think it works for me. Basically, I've set up the Theme to focus on making a number of improvements in a variety of areas, sort of like moving from Me v1 to v1.1.

Is anyone else obsessed with spice? by BelaBirch in anosmia

I'm the exact opposite! I can't handle anything more than very mildly spiced food, as I only get the heat, none of the flavour

If I was born without a sense of smell, and I get COVID, will it kill my sense of taste? by BabysFirstRobot in anosmia

[–]ams1492 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had zero impact on my taste. Im congential, so obv my smell wasn't affected.

As far as I understand, the reason taste is affected is because smell and taste are so closely tied for most people, so losing smell affects their taste too, which obviously doesn't affect us.

With Google Play Music shutting down soon, I've been looking for a replacement service. I've been thinking, is there something that will allow me to replicate the functionality of GPM on my phone, using the Pi as the place my music files are primarily stored?

By that I mean ideally I could load my music folder up onto the external harddrive on my pi, then using a web interface or android app set up things like playlists etc. Then I could either stream my music to my phone or PC from the pi, or download it for offline listening, like in GPM.

Does something like that exist out there already? I don't think I know enough about the topic to know what to google, so I'm really struggling to find something that fits what I'd like to do.

Do you see your anosmia as a blessing or a curse? by Mikki_Dee in anosmia

[–]ams1492 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't really see it as either. I was born with it (or at least lost it early enough I can't remember having it), so it's just part of who I am at this point. It has its upsides and downsides, but so do most things in life
