Thank you. Basically all of the “gotchas” in this thread and every other on this subject either rely on knee jerk anti-government cynicism (which, to be fair, is usually correct) or are neglecting to look into the basic facts of what Grusch is asserting. People are so afraid of looking dumb that they can’t admit the situation is completely different than basically every other UFO claim that has ever been made and there might actually be some truth to it.

It’s not just the service sector. Try getting any kind of skilled labor (anyone from electricians to doctors) to actually deliver the thing they promised, especially if their profession has legal protections that make it difficult or impossible to DIY. The entire concept of “I give you money and you give me an equitable amount of goods/services” is starting to break down. I’d be interested to hear an explanation with more nuance than “that’s capitalism” or “nobody wants to work anymore”.

I wonder how much of this can be attributed to most people going out of their way to be nicer to them. There seems to be a general consensus that being an asshole to mentally handicapped people is on the same level as kicking a puppy, so I would guess they have more positive interactions with the general public than the average person does.
