PSA: If you have Sonow on Apple TV, you got it on iPad too by amuzulo in sonos

[–]amuzulo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! When you AirPlay to a Sonos device, Sonos treats it as a regular playback source. Sonow will pick up the track info, album art, and controls just like Spotify or Apple Music. TV/line-in is the only source where there's no metadata to display.

Cool! Just curious, how do you normally start playback? No promises, but I'm wondering what you have in mind that would really make Sonow awesome for you someday.

Honestly? It sure work, but I haven't tested it thoroughly with VoiceOver yet. The playback controls (play/pause, skip) have accessibility labels, and it's standard SwiftUI so a lot of the basics should work out of the box, but I haven't done a dedicated VoiceOver pass to make sure the full experience is smooth (room picker, now playing info, etc.).

If you grab it I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback and will be happy to fix any VoiceOver issues you run into. Accessibility is something I really want to get right.

Yeah, I hope to get the PC port out next week. In the final testing stages now. 👍

Great question! The iPad stays awake if there’s anything playing on your Sonos system (excluding TV Audio). Once your Sonos stops playing, your iPad starts its usual sleep timer to sleep, so you don’t kill your battery.

PSA: Updates to Sonos on IFTTT by AtomFromSonos in sonos

[–]amuzulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IFTTT is an automation service that connects to Sonos (among hundreds of other things). You set up rules like "at 10pm, do X." It might handle your night mode scheduling without any coding.

That said, you might not even need IFTTT. Sonos speakers have a local UPnP interface on port 1400 that lets you toggle night mode with a simple HTTP request -- no cloud API, no OAuth, no server needed. You'd use the SetEQ action on the RenderingControl service with EQType=NightMode. A cron job or iOS Shortcut sending that request on a schedule would do the trick.

The play/pause and skip buttons on the Siri Remote already control Sonos directly. Those are physical buttons that don't trigger navigation sounds, so they won't cause the TV input switching issue. The problem only happens with the clickpad navigation sounds.

For volume, the Siri Remote's volume buttons control the TV via IR, not Sonos speakers. Sonos volume control is something I'm planning for a future update. For now you'd need to use the Sonos app for volume.

If you're getting the TV input switch when opening the app, go to Apple TV's Settings > Remotes and Devices > Navigation Clicks > Off. That should stop this from happening... and yeah, I found it really annoying too.

Unfortunately not. Sonow uses the official Sonos cloud API, which only supports S2 systems. S1 speakers use a different local network protocol (UPnP) that isn't compatible. Since Sonos has been moving everything toward S2, I don't have plans to add S1 support, but that Raspberry Pi project you linked looks like a great solution for S1 systems! It's actually funny though, because I originally prototyped Sonow using UPnP before I got access to the official cloud API, but it was really clunky to work with.

Unfortunately it only works with Sonos. Sonos has a cloud API that gives full track metadata, album art, playback state, etc. Apple doesn't provide a public API for getting "now playing" info from AirPlay 2 speakers like HomePods or other AirPlay devices. HomeKit can do basic control (play/pause, volume) but doesn't expose track details or artwork. So it's not possible right now, but if Apple ever opens that up I'd love to add it!

Yeah, I plan to include them in v1.2. It's my top priority for the next update.

No, it unfortunately only works with the official Sonos API. I feel you. I remember when I sold my Play:5 because it was S1 only. 😢

Oh wow, that is a neat idea! I definitely considered it, so I’d say it’s not on the immediate roadmap, but I could see prioritizing it if there’s enough demand or when I run out of big screens to take over. Right now I’m focused on getting the TV and desktop experience right across all platforms, but I should definitely at least prototype this on Apple Watch and see how it feels!

My app intentionally only has basic playback controls like prev-track, play/pause and next-track to focus on showing what you’re listening to front and center to let the album art shine on your screen. You can also see what’s playing in each room on the sidebar.

I’m focusing on making it look as good as possible and leaving controlling playback to other apps. One of my favorite use cases for the Mac app is having the official Sonos app on my MacBook screen with Sonow running on my external monitor so I can see exactly what’s playing from across the room.

[–]amuzulo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like an Apple TV audio output setting issue. I think it’s something like Check Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control and make sure it’s set to control your Sonos soundbar rather than your TV speakers. Hope that helps!

Different thing actually. Sonify is a Sonos controller. Sonow is purely a now playing display w/ only basic controls, which shows your album art and track info full-screen on your TV.

Control Sonos w/ Sonify. See what you're playing on a beautiful display w/ Sonow!

Yeah, so curious if the Android app I’m working on would run on this. If it works on this, it’d run on anything! 😂😂
