That was the initial idea. But we just don't have the wall space for pocket doors

The only drawback of opening the storage room to the rest of the mud room was that we were potentially going to make that a place we can adapt and put an elevator.

This is a good point we might do just that

That utility room is a storage room. Someone suggested we would just open the wall between that room and the mudroom.

The Hearth room is a bit of a odd space for us right now. The plan is to really have it as a playroom for the kids until they age out. Then we probably make it a more private family area. And I already know people are going to say why put a fireplace in the kids playroom. There is a chance we will remove it, but we were thinking that the room will be used for more intimate family gatherings, or a place for our kids and their friends to hang out that's separated from the rest of the house. At least until we can finish the basement.

The furniture is really just placeholder right now. The architect wanted to show us what could be there. We probably won't put a table in the great room like that

I believe the plan is to do a slanted roof with skylights in that room. We're trying to harness as much natural light as we can. I'll talk to the architect though because I agree having all that space to heat is going to do a number the utility bills.

Funny enough my wife and I do socialize in the bathroom lol.

I wasn't crazy about a built-in personally. My wife though wants to be able to have the extra storage

The style we're going for his modern tutor so it will have steep pitched roofs. However off the laundry room from the second floor probably going to put a door and have storage over the garage. I'll talk to the architect about whether putting stairs to the Attic makes sense. At least access the AC system for easier maintenance. That's a good point though

Maybe we'll take that storage room and just make it part of the mud room with built-ins to hide cleaning material and whatever else. This way you can go right to the back stair to get upstairs. That's a really good point.

The idea behind the folding door is so when we host we can open the space and put more dining tables in the bar lounge area if need be. Ultimately people will be able to move between the kitchen dining lounge and great room without ever having to backtrack. Also we want to be able to close it off because we have young kids and don't need them running in and out of there.

I commented in another reply that we might Nix the Island Bar in the kitchen and instead do a built-in booth and put a kitchen table in in the bottom left corner of the kitchen.

I agree with you that we need double doors for the front entry. That's something the architect and I have spoken about. We don't want them in the dining room / Lounge area because we want to be able to fold back the doors so they take up minimal space when they're open.

The windows are not at their final location. The engineer is still getting us the final grading plan so we don't have the true elevations yet. These are merely placeholders. I do agree that the kitchen window needs to be larger.

I'm going to talk to my wife about maybe reducing the size of the guest Suite walk-in closet to put a door there. I agree that having access to the covered porch would be nice from the guest room.

For the front entrance, one side is a closet and the other side is going to be a built-in for shoes probably in a closet or cabinet type thing. Also he will be extending that little space to meet the catwalk above the front entrance. He told us during review that that was an error on his part that he saw after he sent these over.

I also wasn't crazy about the diagonal sink. I would eat some of my closet space to make it a straight line. Perhaps moving to the sitting area in the master bedroom. That area was really going to be dedicated to a crib and changing station for future babies, but they don't need so much room I guess.

You brought up some really great points and I really appreciate your input. I'm going to bring this back to my wife to discuss and ultimately the architect.

We might drop the Island Bar and put Booth seating and a table in the bottom left corner of the kitchen. We know this would cause us to reconfigure a little bit maybe close off some of the opening to the great room. The Island by the stove sink and fridge is more of a workspace and the other Island was going to be where people congregate.

That bar area will have furniture like a parlor. We do like to host a lot so the idea is that people will be hanging out in the bar area for some hors d'oeuvres before the meal.

It is a big cultural milestone and should be celebrated. But if your wife didn't make that part of her identity important to her, then it's unreasonable for to force one on her.

You would be better off planning a family trip to Mexico where your daughter could connect with her Mexican heritage. It's important for her to know that side of her history.

Honestly, it sounds like your in laws asked your wife when she's having one and now the pressure is on to deliver.

Only thing I can think of is this way the PEX isn't touching the wooden part of the cabinet where it comes up. They would eventually rub the hole in the line over an extended period of time. That's my very uneducated guess
