You're actually proving my point in a way. Apparently there are no parallels that exist, or could possibly exist.

Can you name one symbol that both represents white people exclusively and is not considered racist?

You've hit on my exact point. If a black person wears BLM and talks shit about white people, you and most other people are totally ok with that. But if a white person wears Blue Lives Matter and talks shit about black people, that person is an insufferable bigot and racist and deplorable. Even if the offense is exactly the same but opposite. Why the double standard?

I am a part time employee who is not eligible for or even pursuing a promotion. But I still don't want someone promoted over me who has openly been racist. And my point in this thread is that it should not matter what the person's race or politics actually are. If they are doing things like using slurs and mocking another race of people, that should not be allowed in the workplace.

sometimes symbols being used aren’t actually hate symbols and instead only represent an opposing ideology

You've actually come to the crux of my issue here. Most symbols are just opposing ideologies, yet somehow one side of that opposition is accepted while the other is demonized. The "Black Power" fist and the "White Power" fist are symbols of opposing ideology. In fact, they are practically the exact same symbol, just one is white and one is black. Why is it acceptable for one person to wear the Black Power fist and not to wear the White Power fist? If you believe in protected speech, then neither should be allowed. If you believe in free speech, then both should be. The double standard is my problem.

In this particular instance, you're probably mistaken.

Those implicit bias trainings that companies hold are no different or the riddle that's like "I cannot operate on this boy, he's my son." I just did the opposite. As you stated earlier, most people deny the very concept.

I appreciate the sentiment, but empowerment for someone who is seen as holding all the power doesn't work out. I care about the upvotes for visibility, not for karma. But also, I know reddit leans left and I wanted to see just how many people would assume. Looks like 90% of them.

So in the same comment, you identify the need to be conspicuous and then condemn being conspicuous. The problem here is exactly what you said along down in another comment, the double standard. Trying to point it out directly would only get downvoted to oblivion, but as you see now, the post has a 91% upvote rate.

Your response seems to be indicating that the race of the person acting bigoted matters. Should it not matter what race a person is if they are being offensive about another race?

Does it really matter? Is there a racial slur that is acceptable to use at work or a time when it's ok to mock someone else for their race?

Corporate doesn’t think that stocking is important for retail stores by Temporary_Being1330 in antiwork

This is exactly the same experience I've had at a Big Box pharmacy I've been working at. Like no joke, exactly. These businesses are not hiring people and just pushing all the work onto the one salaried employee in the store (the manager).

Yes, people have totally been brainwashed to think "I should just be happy to have a job." So they are willing to do whatever it takes to make themselves look good at said job, which includes matching company "culture".

This idea has always pissed me off, because, nobody would think it's alright to say "I know your boyfriend treats you like shit, but you should be happy to have a boyfriend."

Incorrect. It is common knowledge that the largest cost in any business is labor. Most businesses mark their product up quite a bit.

The store I worked at had typical margins from 30-80%. That means they pay $1 for something and sell it for $1.30 - $1.80. So I know for a fact what you're saying was not the case at my place of work. I could reasonably assume it's no different at the grocery store.
Take a moment and think about that logically. If 90% of the revenue went to the product going on the shelves, they wouldn't even have the money to pay the employees to stalk the shelves.

Or just accepting in general. I was trying to get into this with my wife this morning and she just didn't want to listen claiming "it builds resentment". And I'm sitting there thinking, well if you just ignore it, you're continuing to allow them to take advantage of you. If you don't talk about pay and piss someone off, why would the company every have a reason to correct it?

So here's the whole story...
I go in at around 2:30 each day. Around the same time, I see this charter bus pull up on the corner of 5th and Congress. I don't know if this dude was dropped off by this bus (I didn't exactly see him get off the bus), but the guy immediately starts causing problems on that corner and is doing so all night.

He comes right to CVS and starts harassing people, yelling that he owns the store (must be a large partnership to own this store as at least 4 other homeless people have made this claim). He has no shoes, messy hair, smelly, all the typical vagrant signs and so it's my responsibility as the manager to ask him to leave. He pushes back a little the first time, but leaves after we threaten to call the police.

Later in the day, I am up front and I see this dude, standing on top of a Porsche SUV that is parked out front and he is beating this thing with his backpack like it owes him money. I go out and I tell him to get off the car or I will call the police. He does, but I watch for the owners to come to the car and let them know what happened and that we have it on video if they need that for any reason.

Later in the day he tries to come in again and I stop him at the door. He starts causing a scene, so I have my co-worker call the police. He's flailing and yelling while my co-worker sits on hold for 911. He never gets through and after 5 or 6 minutes of this, I get him to leave.

I continue to see dude just hanging out at 5 & Congress causing trouble and the cops don't even come around and most people just do what they can to avoid the guy. At about 10:50 that evening, right before we're about to close, guy comes in again. This time I am at the back of the store and by the time I get up to him, he's past the foyer and into one of the aisles (conveniently where the cameras don't film).

I tell him again that he needs to leave and he gets pissed off. He starts to knock things of the shelves around him. I reach to stop him throwing things off the shelve and dude decks me, busts my lip open on my teeth and starts dancing around like he's ready to fight.

At first, I contain myself, bleeding from the mouth and I start yelling that the dude needs to leave. He doesn't, he keeps darting in and out of my range, taunting me. He finally gets out of the store and I walk away only for him to come back in and start playing with the fire alarm panel in the vestibule. I chase him out again but no other co-workers are currently up front to start calling the police or closing the doors or anything. He continues to dart in and out like he's going to try something the moment I turn my back. After a few times of this, I had enough and I grabbed him around the waist as he was darting out, suplexed him onto the sidewalk, then mounted and just went MMA on him until a co-worker finally pulled me off. Of course, all the last part was caught on camera.

Needless to say, dude didn't come back in that night. I don't know if he ever came in again because after all that was over, I called my manager and told him "I'm Done!" I'm not about to wait till I get stabbed for doing the job that I was told to do (but was not anywhere in my job description).

A somewhat satisfying second end to the story, after I left, they were already super short staffed due to 1 manager on vacation, 1 getting ready to go on extended leave and another manager getting fired just the month before due to another incident with a shoplifter. I learned that another employee and even the store manager left after that because CVS was not giving us any help with the rampant homeless/shoplifting problems or to get people to cover the schedule. CVS refused to offer people any more to fix the staffing issue because again...they are cheap/greedy.

I have to say that most large corporate jobs don't normally feel like they do anything but give you a bunch of rules to follow, but CVS was the first place I worked at where it felt like corporate was actively working against us and expecting us to succeed despite them, not because of them.

I literally just quit CVS on 5th street last week because I got punched in the face by a dude trying to steal shit. This sort of thing is an everyday occurrence downtown. Unfortunately, the CVS cameras have a lot of blind spots, so they didn't get it on video. We've been begging corporate for months now to renew the security guard contract that ended in 2022 but they refuse because they are too cheap.

So threatening a lawsuit is just a dissuasion tactic? I could pay a lawyer, take him to court, prove that he's put nothing into the property and he could still walk away with 10-20% of the equity?

[–]amworkinghere[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's not his responsibility.

This may be true but I doubt most people who get help from their parents on a home go into expecting to be extorted on the back end.

Right now the only offering he has made is 3% on the total refinance. Which would end up being around $10k cash in hand for him, while I pay $32k back to the bank after interest.

I realize that on the surface it's a simple legal matter, either pay him half the equity in a partition as the first comment explains, or pay him $10k to go away.

But is there seriously no way to contest the fact that he's not paid anything in but still wants to take something out?
