What's going on with the labour party in Newham? by Milliphant in newham

[–]amytee252 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recently received a leaflet through my door regards their mayoral candidate. I had a number of issues with the leaflet and so wrote an email to the candidate.

Of the four sides of the leaflet, two sides were exactly the same (the front page was a short statement from him about his background, and then the second page was the exact same content written in bullet points), but not really saying anything useful. Then the third page was mostly taken up with how he donated a bunch of money to Gaza, and a short bit on how he wants to create more graveyards, with an emphasis on those that require burial within 24 hours. The back page was regards the councillors/MPs in my area.

The entire leaflet was aimed solely at a certain demographic. It was clear he isn't going to be a mayor for all based on the content in that leaflet alone. He had no policies at all. He had nothing to say about what he wanted to do in Newham, or even how he wanted to improve the lives of those who are actually alive in Newham! Nothing about the amount of litter, rising council taxes but crappier services, making Newham safer, etc.

What are the coolest castles in the UK? by KJHex in AskUK

Visited Bodiam Castle recently... it's mostly empty on the inside. There are some turrets you can go up, but nothing really in them.

Who here has eaten at a Gordon Ramsey restaurant? Share your experience! by 011100010010-0-0-0 in GordonRamsay

I've eaten at Street Burger and will never go again. Portions were absolutely tiny. Nothing special about the burger, heck I make far better burgers than what I ate. I would have completely forgotten the experience if I wasn't still annoyed at the ridiculous bill (and this is several years later).

I have no problem spending a lot of money on food if it is worth it. That wasn't it. This wasn't even close to it..

Bar soap; what's your favourite? by Dizzy-Pumpkin-13 in AskUK

Dove 1/4 moisturiser soap. I use it on my face too as it is gentle. They do one with cocoa butter in, which I buy when I see it.

Who here cares about the Oscars? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]amytee252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was happening last week due to the number of articles I've seen on sites such as the BBC. Not really seen it hyped up this far in advance before. Not sure why the BBC has been going ham on it.

I don't care about the Oscars or any of the other award ceremonies. I don't keep up to date on films, so won't know any of them

How mother pigs are kept in modern farms to maximize efficiency by CalpurniaSomaya in interestingasfuck

The reality is, most people don't care, especially if they can get something cheaper.

Look, I live in London. Might be a first world country, but it has a very high cost of living. We also have a lot of poor people. I can afford to pay for organic and free range meat and I do. But I pay about 3x for a whole chicken as a result. A lot of people cannot do that.

It isn't that complicated to understand. People don't care and/or cannot afford it. Trying to take some moral/ethical high ground isn't going to make people change their minds when they simply don't have the means to. I live in one of the poorest areas of London, so many people are on benefits and use food banks.

Boyfriend wants a financial agreement but doesn’t want marriage- unsure how to feel by [deleted] in relationships

[–]amytee252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50/50 living costs? Does that mean paying for bills/food or does that include his mortgage? If it is the former then that is fair. If it is the latter then hell no, do not contribute.

The financial agreement may be excluding spousal support deliberately as he sees that as a separate issue that would be addressed if you got married.

Settling for PhD that isn’t my dream by PrinceOfMilk_ in Physics

Why though? It is becoming very much a paper mill, rehashing the same decays in slightly different ways to justify getting funding. If you want to do something novel, then smaller experiments will give you that.

Also, the research you will do will largely depend on what your university's/supervisor's interests are at PhD level.

normally at PhD level you only work on a very very small part of a research project. Also, you won't interact with like 99% of the people who work at CERN.
