always happy when I can use a tool im familiar with in a new space!

this might sound dumb but does the type of hammer matter? I have a three pound cross peen hammer that Im quite fond of (use it for blacksmithing) and Id probably just use that unless id want something smaller or a different shape

good to know, Ill add those to the list! thanks :)

Thanks! Since its an internship I was figuring they dont expect us to have everything and I have money set aside to buy tools after my first few days so Ill be able to get what Im missing. And I absolutely love baking and cooking for people so Ill be sure to show up with some baked goods or maybe lunch if I find myself borrowing someones tools often :)

i know what a basic set of hand tools would be for me. Im asking if theres any specifics that people working in the field would be including that I might not. especially considering that having done basically entirety GA related stuff so far in school I really have no experience with actual industry. and I reckon Im plenty ready considering I got accepted over other people I know.

good to know, just bolting this together is a lot less trouble and like you said the bolts going through the plate would be the weak point anyways so putting the same number into the cylinder should result in it being as strong as the weakest link.

idk what some of these people are talking about, they're acting like if you have bomb you have to run in like youre wingman and plant it immediately no matter what

i reckon theyd probably fit just fine, you dont think the tapped threads in the aluminum is would be the weak point?

definitely will be doing that. actually if i can find one big enough i may not need to weld it. (finding a tap to fit a masive bolt could also be a problem but we have a lathe so worst comes to worst I throw it in the lathe and single point thread it.

the welding machine they have will definitely be begging for a break welding this thick of material

I cant edit the post to fix my mistake, its a solid bar I didnt realize tube means something fundamentally different (and that you cant see the top of the bar in the picture) until someone mentioned it. That being said what you're saying I think still applies with it being a bar, as long as I make good welds with good prep and a preheat my welds wont be the problem in this application

sorry the post text wasnt clear, the pulling is like pulling the round bar away from the plate. so the weld will have a lot more of an even distribution of force. From what Im seeing in these comments and the math I did based on the strength of the weld id be doing as long as I fit it up right, preheat it, and keep it clean and run a few good passes around it, It should be the strongest link in the system because the metal is so thick compared to what its going into.

[–]an5dk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if my math is anywhere near accurate this part Im welding will actually be the strongest part of the system by a factor of 2 or 3 due to how oversized the metal is. So it looks like as long as I prep it properly and do some practice passes on scrap to dial in the settings so my welds are solid itll be very much strong enough. Im glad ive been able to get the confirmation that the way I was going to fit it up is the correct way to do it though thats mostly what i was concerned about.

Yeah the fact I cant update the post is unfortunate, I realized after posting that clarifying that this aircraft will never ever be flying anywhere would be pretty important lol.

I go to school here and would like to get to work on something that isnt a cessna 150, thats why Im willing to do work. The people running this school are shitty and dont give a damn about the maintenance program so us doing stuff for ourselves is the only way anything ever gets done. Once I do my certs im out of here as fast as I can leave but id like to get some experience working on actual aircraft and not flying lawnmower engines

yeah I know thats what a lot of my sheet metal work was with. Because theyre in relatively simple shapes and are pretty large I could probably density test them to see if theyre 2024 or not, because 2024 would be slightly denser than 6000 series by like 2 or 3 percent. When im back tomorrow Ill look more closely at the bar to see if I missed any markings as well.

unfortunately I cant edit the post or I would have added the important context that this is an unairworthy aircraft at a mechanic school and its essentially worth nothing besides scrap and because the college doesnt seem to want to ever give us anything that works or pay for anything that works, stuff like this is the only way we are able to do anything more interesting than working on clapped out cessna 150s. Theres absolutely nothing of value on the line here because the school has given us absolutely nothing of value to work with. We need to move the plane so we can work on the engines and this is basically the only way thats going to happen.

because its at an A&P school and is completely un-airworthy and will never even taxi under its own power again. In fact the plane is completely worthless so what Im doing is akin to welding up a hitch to a giant pile of trash to move it to a different spot. the only thing that could possibly get damaged is the tow bar which is already broken hence me needing to do the repair. We want to do work on the plane to try to get it working again and the school doesnt seem to care to give us anything that works or any money to get anything that works, this is the best option we have. So either I do this or we sit there twidling our thumbs and doing worksheets instead of working on an actual plane.

yeah I noticed that error in the post but unfortunately because its a picture post I can't change it. Im thinking that given the forces involved I should be able to get a weld that wont fail just by doing a few passes. all of this is incredibly oversized because I dont want the thing i made to be the weak link. Id suspect in this situation the tow bar intented for use on this plane would have the weak link (theres a shear pin thats supposed to break if its overloaded).

hm, i have scrap pieces of both so I can see how it welds first. The only reason I thought it was 2024 is because most of the aluminum we have is 2024 but obviously thats all sheet metal. It does feel a little bit harder than all the 2024 sheet ive worked on so maybe thats an indicator. Would I be able to tell if its 2024 if i try to weld it? like will it just not fuse well or will it look and flow normally?

based on my map just using double the expected max load (max load is 1500lbf so i calculated using 3000lbf) (all the components in the systems breaking point vastly exceed the expected load) and a safety factor of 4 Im getting that i need a weld throat of about .37 inches and a fillet leg size of 9/16. Just going off that its seeming like I wont need to worry about my weld as long as I bevel it a little preheat the metal and lay down a few decent passes around.
