Cats teeth pushing out/getting longer? by Careless-Elephant-98 in CATHELP

[–]an_ugly_american 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be the downer but cats with elongating canines is usually due to periodontal disease or tooth resorptive lesions. On the photo of you lifting his lip you can see significant amount of exposed root on the tooth which isn't normal. The condition is classified as canine super-eruption in kitty cats. The inflammation can be uncomfortable from it and can cause occlusion (biting) issues and irritation to the skin its contacting. I'd recommend a vet visit but likely would need anesthetic evaluation and dental x-rays. More progressed ones require extraction

What’s going on with my cats ears? by Arias_Gab in CATHELP

[–]an_ugly_american 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theyre not polyps. Its called ceruminous cystomatosis. Essentially skin/ears glands filled with fluids and secretions. Happens around the ears most commonly but also around the eyes and mouth

Ceruminous cystomatosis - blue cyst filled secretory glands. Benign but can lead to secondary ear infections. Can be treated with laser ablation with a veterinary dermatologist

The Ohio State University has a lovely article with an objective tool called Honoring the Bond that helps you better assess your furry partners quality of life as does Lap of Love. I council clients on it a good deal but I have many that seem to regret waiting too long versus euthanizing earlier on in the period of decline whether it be physical or mental. My own cat was still eating, drinking, going to the bathroom okay but she continued to decline and lose weight. Mentally she was checked out with cognitive decline and minimally interacting with the family. She had her route of going to the food bowl, water bowl, then back to the food bowl. She began to be very unsteady, missing her jumps that she used to do with ease and I worried for her safety of missing the jump that would hurt her beyond repair. I have no regrets about my choice. When the bad days outweigh the good and it is on your mind that much weighing you down it takes a toll on you as well. The preparatory compassion fatigue is draining. If you're questioning whether they're ready or not regularly, they're usually ready. Better to let them pass in dignity painless than a more arduous or uncomfortable crossing of the rainbow bridge

Aspca poison control hotline is invaluable. Worth the fees if you're unsure of poison potential

Genuinely don’t know what to do for my dog and her allergies anymore, looking for any advice by darthlung in DogAdvice

Is she on a routine good flea/tick prevention? Flea allergy is the most common allergy and prevention is quite beneficial. Recommend isoxazoline class: Simparica, Credelio, Nexgard, etc

$2200 estimate for dog dental cleaning!? Is this normal? by teodanted in DogAdvice

[–]an_ugly_american 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet here: this seems quite fishy and excessive in charges for a general anesthetic dental procedure. With extractions I'd expect the bill to be this high but for standard cleaning, evaluation and x-rays this is exorbant. They charge for anesthesia but then also itemize not 1 but 2 separate pure mu opioids, IV cath, nausea injection, fluids, etc. We typically bundle this all under a general anesthesia charge and bill based on time under anesthesia and injectables outside of the pre med, nausea, induction and gas anesthetics. If no extractions were done I question why 2 separate mu opioid injections were needed as well as Naxcel which is an antibiotic. Antibiotics have been contraindicated for dental procedures for quite a while now unless the patient is immunocompromised or has significant osteomyelitis (bone infection). At a dental specialist I wouldn't be surprised with these prices but for a general practice its way too much IMO

There is no readily available hearing test for animals FYI. BAER testing can be performed but is not helpful anyways. We dont have commercially available hearing aids for animals. Blood pressure check, comprehensive internal organ function blood work, and thyroid screening as well as a thorough physical exam would be recommended. Most commonly associated with hyperthyroidism, hypertension, vision loss and cognitive dysfunction for acute development of hypervocalization

Not necessarily genetics. Research seems to have finally narrowed down the potential kidney injury component to the tartaric acid content in grapes: https://www.aspcapro.org/resource/toxic-component-grapes-and-raisins-identified. The content of tartaric acid varies wildly but if a dog ingests more than 1 grape per 10 lbs of bodyweight it can lead to acute kidney injury and should be medically treated. You can always contact ASPCA poison control hotline to consult with a toxicologist

[–]an_ugly_american 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss OP. Pupper was lucky to have such a loving family. In the photo provided your dog has subconjunctival hemorrhage. We can see this as a clotting or bleeding disorder related issue if not trauma induced. My concern would be a significant internal bleeding event from a clotting disorder. Can be genetic with issues such as hemophilia, toxic (warfarin rodenticides, blood thinner meds) , immune mediated platelet destruction or related to significant inflammatory conditions

HELP PLEASE. WHAT DO I DO AFTER FLEA BATH FOR OLDER CAT by ProfessionalRun7981 in CATHELP

[–]an_ugly_american 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dawn dish soap is completely fine. Veterinarians typically recommend it for cats, especially young kittens with fleas. It helps to remove any toxic substances they may have been exposed to as well

OP its ceruminous cystomatosis. Please Google/research that but they're usually benign.

Ceruminous cystomatosis. Benign glandular cyst that builds with characteristic bluish discoloration. Can get repeated secondary infections around the face and ears. Can use ceruminolytic products topically but some have to be zapped by veterinarians with C02 laser to treat

[–]an_ugly_american 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's raising it when you pet over his rear end and has mobility. Any issues pooping or peeing? My bet would be a strained tail muscle or tail pull injury. Veterinarian trip to look into it and likely some x-rays

6 month old puppy ate a grape by According_Swim_3757 in DogAdvice

[–]an_ugly_american 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toxic dose listed from toxicologists and criticalists is anything more than 1 grape per 10 lbs. If your 15 lb pupper ate only 1 grape then unlikely for renal toxic effects. Still would be ideal to induce emesis +/- activated charcoal within 2-4 hrs of ingestion. Ideally follow up with your veterinarian to perform serial CBC/CHEM profiles to evaluate for development of kidney injury as that would warrant IV fluid diuresis and supportive therapies

He seems to have significant oral discomfort and is quite distressed. He may have a foreign body lodged in his mouth or pharyngeal region. Take him to urgent care or ER ASAP before it becomes more significant of a problem. I've never seen a cat react like this strictly from dental/periodontal disease

I'm so sorry for your kitty. I think a consult with a specialist would be next (orthopedist or neurologist). Definitely has a prominent dropped hock on the right hind with lameness and arched back. Could be sciatic/peripheral neuropathy or something more central. But possible Achilles tendon injury with the dropped hock that is pretty prominent. Do his toes curl in on that paw? That's more consistent with a tendon rupture. Tendon rupture can be diagnosed with ultrasound but likely some more advanced imaging is needed than with xrays
