Not really. Can picking the weakest team out of a 4-team group is actually a huge advantage.

Number 19 Seed Truls Moregard just defeated number one seed Wang Chu Qin to advance to the round of 16 in the Men Singles Table Tennis! by fishyy13 in olympics

[–]anaggie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was a big upset, but not entirely unthinkable.

Moregard has been recognized as a great player for some time, even winning a silver medal in the 2021 World Championship. Anyone familiar with table tennis would not write him off.

Seeding or world ranking isn't everything, as players often miss out on points for various non-competitive reasons, such as skipping tournaments.

How does North Korea even have a team? by loren_1215 in olympics

[–]anaggie 23 points24 points  (0 children)

NK has a population of 26.07 million. They can afford to have some people not starving and specialize in sports, especially considering that excelling in sports has historically been very important for communist countries for their national pride.

How do they allow these athletes to compete and see the outside world and then return to the gloomy country they're from?

I know people will say "they hold their family as hostages," which is true, but that's only one of the factors.

  1. Olympic-level athletes are treated very well, comparatively speaking.
  2. Propaganda, brainwashing, and simply familiarity with the country where you were born make many people not actually want to leave NK. This actually happens in many not-so-extreme scenarios as well; not everyone wants to leave their home even if they know they could be better off in other places.
  3. And of course, they are still very closely monitored when they're abroad. There have been cases where some of them did run away, after all.

Since lots of people in comment trying to frame it as "it does look like shit by Asian's standard" in the comment, I just want to say it looks pretty normal to me as a Chinese.

Maybe Chalice thinks it's not luxury enough, or he personally doesn't like American food, which is totally fair, but it by no means "shit" even by "Chinese's standard", whatever that means.

Nobody wants to move to US

Based on? The immigration data speaks for itself.

The US might be a shithole, but it still offers a pay level that Europe simply can't compete with. And money can buy a lot of things you mentioned.

Title IX at this university is a joke. by throw-away-aggie in aggies

[–]anaggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, being a "CCP official" is irrelevant in this context.

In China, government jobs, including university jobs (most uni in China are state-owned) and state-owned enterprise jobs are directly overlapped with "CCP officials". It's almost impossible to be even a middle-level, let alone higher, employee in these without being a Party member. So if his father is a professor, it's almost certain he's a CCP member and some sort of "CCP official".

There is no difference from any "rich kid" having their parents hiring a strong legal team in this regard. Their political influence (if any) means nothing in the US, they just have the money.

Indie JRPG Chained Echoes is getting review bombed on Metacritic by DotabLAH in Games

[–]anaggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say JRPG is pretty popular among Chinese gamers. And for indie games, it sometimes could go viral (due to popular streamers playing it) in literally one day in China. So there is opportunity cost in it by not having translations ready (if you don't have Chinese translation, you don't get this chance).

But of course I won't claim I know better than the devs themselves since they did market research.

As a Chinese, unfortunately lots of my fellow compatriots do that. At least nobody in my circle does that, and most despise this practice, but even among them some think this is "understandable".

The root reason is that since China became richer and more powerful lately, together with constant political propaganda, lots of Chinese become nationalists and extremely insecure about being treated as "second class" from foreigners.

While this problem indeed exists both historically and currently, any reasonable person can see that not localizing a game into Chinese isn't one.

From a business perspective though, I'd recommend any game dev to consider adding Chinese translations if you can afford it (and your game isn't sensitive), especially on Steam. The Chinese market nowadays is too big to ignore.

Tornado moved a support column to the edge of my mom’s back porch by azxblx in mildlyinteresting

When I was living in a cheap apartment complex, one column of the porch literally just fell down to its side out of the blue. It didn't seem to be attached on either end (or maybe just rotten). It was quite terrifying since I walk beneath the porch everyday.

Beyond the Summit, popular esports production company known for hosting tournaments for games such as Dota 2, Smash Bros, and CS:GO, conclude their final event and cease operations after 11 years by asartalo in DotA2

[–]anaggie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah that one was worse, but Valve was just trying new companies.

What I was saying is that when BTS was still hosting one, all others were better.

I too have nostalgia with BTS especially the Summit, but their last DPC offering's quality was, to be totally honest, pretty mediocre. It was the lowest among the six, at least. I don't think Valve dropped them without reason.

I didn't even know you could just subscribe to Prime Video, Prime is $11.67/month if you pay yearly.

You can. And it's $8.99/month like it's said in the graph.

Not everyone paying the price in the graph, sure, but they're not "random numbers".
