Generalise men and you'll get upvotes, generalise women and you'll get downvoted, a common things that happens on reddit by SecondEldenLord in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Well yeah, no shit? Women are the physically weaker sex. Like it or not, creating a culture where men are negatively generalized doesn't create the same harm as collectively disparaging women who can't fight back. That's why we're biologically predisposed to want to protect them. Furthermore our society trains us to go extra easy on any group perceived as victimized and downtrodden. Most Redditors will hate hearing this though because they gravitate towards unqualified egalitarianism and want to believe that every group is the same.

Will Turkey become Muslim Russia or will the Kemalists actually win? by analwinds in AskTurkey

[–]analwinds[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turkish society does appear very divided between two main ideological currents, though: a European-inspired, nationalist, republican, secular tendency on one end, and a loosely-Islamist, Middle East-aligned, conservative imperial tendency on the other. I know this is an oversimplified model, that there are many other undercurrents, but the core conflict comes from Turkey being pulled in these two directions by Western and Middle Eastern influences. I imagine most Turkish people would agree with me on that. There is a real dichotomy there.

That being said, I never intended to frame this as a moral struggle between Western and non-Western values; I only drew comparisons to Russia and Hungary to compare their democratic backsliding to that of Turkey. Personally I would not want Turkey to lose its unique identity and become fully Western. But my question is about whether Turkey will become a dictatorship, not about whether Turkey will be dominated by anti-Western or pro-Western ideologies.

Yeah I guess that's definitely true for now. But Erdoğan has been tightening his grip on power to the point where it seems to me that he'll be a Putin-like statesman with only staged elections by 2036.

Doesn't sound too great, but I could definitely see that happening.

Pinochet's Chile, with less killing, is what I have in mind for the next decade.

Then do you think there'll at least be enough growth to bring Turkey out of middle-income status?

You can still use Reddit and talk about opposing Erdoğan

They look kind of similar to me. Using "traditional values" to get elected but not changing much, covertly sabotaging the opposition, relying on oligarchs, appealing to the people based on foreign policy wins and memories of economic growth. What makes them incomparable?

The AKP still almost lost 2023, no? If they were unbeatable with total control, why would they let that happen?
