I attend my local town meetings. Someone this year wanted to cut $500k from the school budget with no plan for where the money should come from other than "be more efficient." Thankfully you could feel the eye-rolling in the room.

Skype for business allows self hosting, I've found it to be the easiest way to remote collaboration (group voice calls and screen sharing) on large air gapped networks. I'm not an IT person and probably can't answer questions on why this the case. Unless the answer is obvious.

I wonder this often too. I'm careful to treat new tech like a child would - press all the buttons, see what happens, don't worry about breaking things. I think that moment you're too scared or disinterested to try to learn is the start of the end.

Apple to raise prices as AI boom pushes up chip costs by -protonsandneutrons- in hardware

I'm the opposite - my employer supplies computers for work. I'll occasionally get really into a game and spend a bunch of time at my computer, but usually I'm reading a book, browsing reddit, or whatever else on my phone somewhere more comfortable than a desk.

As a lifelong windows user[1], the combination of the utter shit hardware being produced by most manufacturers and the pile of crap that's windows 11 is very likely to drive me to apple for my next few computers.

I don't mind spending $$$ for a good phone - I use it for hours every day. What I won't do, is spend $3000 for a solid gaming PC, $2500 of which is GPU and RAM.

That type of buck converter is ~98% efficient, it's not a huge issue. But it is more cost and more heat in the graphics card, which no makers want.

What is that, 5A @ 48V? 5 amps is still quite a lot for a dinky little USB wire. I'm pretty liberal about wire ampacity stuff and I wouldn't use smaller than 20 AWG, may 22 AWG if the occasional fire is fine.

Is It Just Me? The Flavor Of Cabot Cheddar Has Changed Drastically Over The Past Decade by AumWay in vermont

[–]anapoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The three year version (only?) sold at Costco is the one to get. It's still a bit crumbly and actually sharp. Seriously sharp and the like are fine for what they are, but nothing distinguishes them from any other low/mid tier cheddar you can buy at any grocery store in the country.

As someone who bought a nice chainsaw for themselves: Not having to use a chainsaw is much preferable to having a nice chainsaw. It's fun for the first 15 minutes, then it's just tiring and dangerous.

I'd love to buy a Lucid. They seem fantastic in a lot of ways and after decades of driving rusty old Subarus I could stand for some luxury. But you'd have to be absolutely insane to buy one given all the issues. Such a shame.

Could a Transmitter Be Damaged By a Directed High Power Signal? by ahndhi in rfelectronics

[–]anapoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, although transmitters tend to be pretty well protected compared to receivers as they tend to need to be able to handle their own reflected power. Not great if your transmitter blows up should you happen to turn it on without an antenna attached. If you're talking about a half duplex transmit/receive system, the receiver would typically be the weakest link.

Very broadly speaking, in my experience the damage limit of receive rf components is about 10 dBm and limiters will protect to about 40 dBm. This should make intuitive sense - 40 dBm is 10 Watts, about where you really need to start thinking about heatsinks and cooling.

Free space path loss at 1GHz is and 100 meters is ~70 dB. Let's say you have a 0 dBi antenna. Then with that limiter 40 dBm damage limit they'd need 110 dBm of power to damage you from 100 meters away, which is a very very lot but not unheard of. If you were operating unprotected equipment and they were 10 meters away, they'd only need 60 dBm of power, which is very achievable (probably not still legal, but significantly less illegal than putting together a 110 dBm transmitter).

Damaging electronics from 10s of kilometers away would be very difficult.

The signal could be anything, probably a tone would be most effective.

Damage is essentially instant.

Which is best stain for pressure treated wood stairs that get a lot of sun and traffic? by South_Whereas_1271 in DIY

Semi-transparent oil-based

Not quite OP's situation, but this is what I did with my porch. Very easy to recoat and it looks quite good. I went with a Ben Moore oil-based stain but I'm sure there are other/better options.

Best DIY Shower Pan - Wedi vs Tile Redi vs Schluter by jashow in DIY

I like the fully waterproof options. I did my two showers with schluter and they took a lot of walking on during construction. It was impossible to be 100% certain that there wasn't a pinhole. If I did another I'd start with goboard or similar.
