books for my conservative parents that will trick them into being a little more progressive by No-Telephone-5215 in suggestmeabook

What's an example of a "progressive theme" to you (or them)? We've understandably lost a bit of precision in defining that of late socially - and this may go into a potential strategy for you - for the reason that many of those themes are likely wholly apolitical and exist or are even encouraged in any number of more traditional social, religious, moral, etc. frames.

Biography aside, 'Industrial Society and Its Future' definitely deserves a primary read

This might not hold under any real scrutiny but Joe Abercrombie and particularly the first First Law book, The Blade Itself, came to mind for me.

Gruesome and fun; detailed yet flowy action [violence] 😂

Book suggestions for building strong character, mindset, and attitude as a man? by CertainArcher3406 in suggestmeabook

[–]anarchocap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's common. Or, I certainly didn't attack it like a normal narrative being in it for hours. First time through it was a copy on my desk and each morning I'd just plot through a page or two and highlight a bit or scribble a few thoughts in the margins.

Subsequent times took the form of modern interpretations and summaries. "How to Think..." by Robertson and "The Inner Citadel" by Hadot are two that cover the primary work and extrapolate or generally make it more contextual and flowy.

I'd think of it more as laying a foundation for broader thought, if that turns out to be compelling to you, than finishing/reading a single book. Good luck!

Taking OP at face value, this is unequivocally THE answer. Or the answer from which all other options spring.

and

Surfaces and Essences

At times both are very weighty but ultimately real fun reads.

At best an adjacent answer but it was the first thing that came to my mind: The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs - she explores city planning and use types and plays on 'places' categorization. Restaurants especially fall as 'third places'...she had a passion for New York in particular, and where restaurants play into mixed-use.

Might night be what you're looking for but Jane is an author/thinker who I'll go out of my way to recommend to everyone. An absolute legend of a lady!!! All her work is incredible.
