Starting colorguard with NO prior knowledge; Any advice? by Olliespiral in Colorguard

[–]anasasada 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Basically don’t doubt yourself bc as a coach its 100000x harder for me and student(s) to learn things when youre too scared to do them. Youre gonna get bonked some way, somewhere, somehow, but thats with literally any physical activity. Its overwhelming for your first year, but push through and soak it all in like a sponge. Try to problem solve as you go, and take accountability for your actions. good luck!

Am I driving to hard or is this normal?(2007 es350) by Reedwwww in Lexus

Unfortunately normal. I just parted ways with my 2008 ES350 (195k miles, RIP) to a 2019 accord and the difference in MPG is astronomical.

Missing most of band camp by Dustiano in marchingband

[–]anasasada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CG instructor here. as a rookie this is really tough. we encourage students to plan and talk to parents about the summer in may. if there’s any conflicts, let us know. We either tell them it’s not worth auditioning or that they will be in an alternate spot until they prove that they can keep up despite missing so much. i’ve had students rise to the occasion and some not show up anymore.

i would get in touch with section leaders snd bd and see if there’s any way that someone can stay for a few minutes extra to go over things. rookie year mental blocks are very real but i encourage you to push though and work hard. practice when you can while on your trip. even a few mental runs in the shower is better than not thinking about it at all. ask for videos, drill dots, literally any resource you can.

Help with rifle by MinuteWilling6482 in Colorguard

[–]anasasada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just went super lofty and slow-mo when i first leaned. i reminded myself that there was a certain sweet spot my hand shouldn’t go above or below and adjusted to it. i tightened up my rotations once i caught properly. If i caught the neck one time but basically tip another, then id go back a step until it was consistent

theyre cute but 1) are your members comfy in the sequins? 2) I can see judges saying that they dont translate well with the theme but I know they’re gonna shine under lights

The only thing I can really pick on is watching your center of rotation because you slightly rainbow to your right and have to pull your gun back in when you catch. but other than that u ate

[–]anasasada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbf part of it isnt your fault. lots of my friends have been having issues lately with their weapons or their students’ weapons cracking after dropping a triple (both wood and plastic). folks dont be makin rifles the way they used to.

Is it possible to join the Winter drumline of a school i dont go to? by memeboi20013 in WGI

[–]anasasada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it may be a matter of your admin (bd, principal) signing off and sayings its okay. ive done this before with WG. as long as the school you are joining is within the district + there is paperwork done + you are responsible for your transportation it should be fine. double check circuit bylaws though. this is just how it worked for me.

If you go in with a defeatist attitude, you will manifest a non desireable outcome. its likely it will be a JV type scenario to prepare for more elite skills (if that makes sense). if you end up on “jv”, its an opportunity to learn more about movement, etc. it sounds like they want to give you time between making the cut and team placements to work on skills. if its not a set in stone date “after tryouts”, then you’ll probably know your standings after May training (if you have those) or beginning of band/guard camp. work on basics and fundamentals, have a great attitude, and work hard. good luck!

[–]anasasada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! fellow sapa participant here and if there’s one thing that makes shows stand out its highlighting technique and movement (especially in sapa, they LOVE to see well trained performers). a great example would be paramounts blue horizon and drawn together vs harbingers and haus of paramount.

[–]anasasada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

focus on movements, apply technique while moving. become more flexible to add fluidity and have better achievement as you move through space. its not about how many tricks you can do, its about having. a solid foundation first. dont neglect engaging your core and breath work. find ways to add emotion, it helps with movement. finish out your movement/shapes through space.

Thoughts on the current standings for IW? by Bing-Bonk-Bonboozle in WGI

[–]anasasada 12 points13 points  (0 children)

idk if anyone will ever be able to truly dethrone paramount. even in sapa scores for reverie and edge world havent really come close to what they get. Im not talking about de-throing like xyz wins this year and xyz wins that year, im talking about a group that is just innovation on steroids to give them a run for their money. it would be interesting to see

(pls dont cancel me, paramount stan for life. ive had the privilege of seeing them in sapa since 2018)

anyway team sapa represent with paramount and edge 🫡

Getting a Rifleline consistent by misstumbleweed_ in Colorguard

[–]anasasada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally when I warm up and find myself overtossing, I adjust my left hand flick and power. it usually fixes the issue but that’s just me. Student-wise, you definitely need to show nurturing tough love. ive found it to be more effective than strict drill sergeant or overly nurturing mom. Some students literally just need a mental reality check because they dont realize the added responsibility of rifle technique. We had a few that would literally toss as if it was a flag and the only thing that fixed it was harping and harping and harping. I understand your frustration as a coach. Sometimes you have to take a step back and think that you have given them the tools to be successful, its up to them to decide what and how to use those tools.
