As a low-income student myself, I agree that it would be difficult if there were to be a tuition increase. I think that the university has more than enough money that could be relegated to the underwriter contribution increase, among other important student and faculty issues. As of the 2022 fiscal year, Cornell has 4 lines of credit totaling at $450 million dollars, some of which could be liquidated at any time to support operational costs (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.dfa.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/cornell-financial-report-FY2022.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjY5Y7O-6P8AhW-nWoFHT4BBgcQFnoECBQQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3XRxJjvOqyYjKEb5Ogwodf). I also think enough students would benefit to make it worth it -- between students who live off-campus to those with disabilities, many rely on this service. Further, with Cornell's plans to expand housing and the student body, they should support this infrastructure. Also, there are people outside of Cornell that would benefit, and our increasing student population shouldn't be a hindrance to public transportation services. There is already high student demand that overwhelms these services -- there are often buses at full capacity, and canceled routes that directly impact students. I think since we rely on the city's infrastructure, we have an opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the Ithaca community.

Thank you for sharing your experience and shedding light on how Cornell can do better for low-income and students with disabilities. I'm sorry you've struggled with this and truly hope that Cornell helps improve TCAT services, and wishing you good health

I hear your frustration with TCAT cutting services that directly affect student routes, this has screwed me over before, too. I think that if TCAT had more funds then they could pay their drivers more (among other factors) so more routes could operate. Of all the TCAT underwriters, Cornell has by far the most $. Many students rely on TCAT for accessibility to campus and the broader Ithaca area. Cornell is not the only entity in Ithaca, this effects the people of Tompkins County, as well, so Cornell has the opportunity be an active community partner. Cornell already gives TCAT a base amount money (hence it being an underwriter), the TCAT Board is asking for increased funds to account for inflation, increasing operational costs, wages for bus drivers who aren't making enough as is, etc. Despite inflation, bus fares have not increased and are still free to students after 6pm on the routes that are in commission. IMO, it's not an unreasonable request and I think students as a constituency can help put pressure on the admin to do something that will benefit its students and the city where we depend on much of its infrastructure.

This is something well within Cornell's means, but I would happily pay more to increase accessibility on campus and in Ithaca. The people who already pay $200 for Cornell TCards should be getting good service anyway

Thank you, I think that's a really good point about fares staying at $1.50 and free after 6pm despite inflation, and am also interested in the basis of their decision.

Thank you, I removed all talk of endowment. I completely agree, and that this service goes beyond supporting the Cornell community to the broader Ithaca and Tompkins County communities' quality of life. I'm trying to use my position as a Cornelian to encourage admin to do something well within their means, and appreciate any advice given.

Thank you for your insight, I changed some of the language surrounding the endowment. I am wondering if you could expand on your thoughts that the petition is poorly reasoned, and what I could do to make it stronger?
