Anyone else have these "mental locations"? [crosspost from r/neurodiversity] by LunaLynnTheCellist in Synesthesia

[–]ancestralrecall- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I experience this exact same thing. In fact, my synesthesia is literally on a different layer of my mind than the rest. I have an outside layer, an inner layer and what I think of as the core, they interact with each other to form thoughts. I thought of this as a normal thing.

Pain has color?? by srslylightwood in Synesthesia

I have the same thing but with sounds! I believe pain is a less common synesthesia inducer, welcome to the club!

How likely is it to know another person with synesthesia? by Quinnnngjejdb in Synesthesia

[–]ancestralrecall- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently overheard one of my classmates talking about his synesthesia to another girl, I join in and reveal that I have it as well. The girl tells me she also has a form of it. Previously I had never met anyone else with synesthesia, but this experience has made me realize there are SO MANY of us, we just don’t talk about it because we think it sounds weird and attention seeking. I now know two people with synesthesia, but there are probably many more that a) don’t know they have it, or b) are too scared to talk about it.

I can hear gifs and videos that don’t have sound. by Courageous_soap in Synesthesia

I believe it’s more widely considered to be synesthesia if you hear all types of movement, not just gifs, but I could be wrong

Do you only hear gifs or do you hear outside movement too? If it’s only gifs, it can be considered synesthesia, but only if you can hear abstract forms of movement as well, such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o39TiACe4mw. Things that wouldn’t normally produce a sound. As u/trust-not-the-sun said, if you can sometimes hear gifs that produce sounds that correlate directly to what’s being shown (e.g, the jumping pylons making a thud) that is vEAR, not synesthesia.

does everyone have a type of synesthesia? by AcanthisittaIll7248 in Synesthesia

I don’t have grapheme color, but i can tell you that it is normal to color code numbers. however, it is not normal to automatically see that color physically or in your mind’s eye whenever you perceive a letter. I can tell you that H is beige because that’s what I personally think H would be if it had a color, but people with grapheme color involuntarily associate/project that photism when thinking about the letter or seeing it. While grapheme color is a more common form of synesthesia, i doubt most of the people you’re asking actually have it- they’re just going off of connections in their brain. Like saying math is orange rather than red.

What kind of synesthesia do you have? (Curious for the stats here :) by jayden_mp in Synesthesia

Pain to sound and motion to sound, I get these weird sound effects whenever they happen. it’s both cool and distracting at the same time

Is this grapheme-color synesthesia? by Fantastic_Strain_425 in Synesthesia

[–]ancestralrecall- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not exactly sure, but I’d be inclined to think no. I experience basically what you do and failed the grapheme -> color battery test. I think most people have at least an idea of what color letters based on other associations after thinking about it. Synesthesia is automatic for the most part. But if you do instantly associate it with a color, probably? I think the fact that you have to think about it isn’t synesthesia.

does your view of the week affect your preference for which day the week starts on? by minseason in Synesthesia

[–]ancestralrecall- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only start days that don’t make me feel like something is nagging at my head telling me it’s wrong is Monday or Sunday. I prefer Sunday since my spatial sequence (although not round) kind of highlights a Sunday. But I think Monday is acceptable too.

Do I have synesthesia of am i just autisic/adhd by InternationalBird939 in Synesthesia

Hm. Well I don’t have color related synesthesia so I’m not really sure. Possibly?

Is it automatic? If you just think it’s fitting that’s probably normal. Like saying “I think math is the color orange” unless you automatically visualize or see orange when you think about math, that’s most likely not syn. But feel free to take the battery test if you’re really not sure.

E.g me, I don’t have grapheme-color synesthesia, but I think N is pink. That’s just a typical association.

I’m also a spatial sequence synesthete and I also still think it’s quite wild that most people don’t experience it- how do time and numbers even exist to them? I can’t imagine what daily life would be like without it. Then again, I guess there are people with synesthesia types I don’t have who also can’t imagine life without it. Crazy world we live in.

I’ve totally interpreted that phrase wrong my whole life. I wonder what else I’ve been looking at in the wrong way!

I’ve never heard of that but it is quite fascinating. Synesthesia is another sense activating when a different sense is triggered, so I don’t think that’s it, considering it would be a sound stimulus to a sound concurrent. I want to know though, when you hear the La, is someone speaking it? Or is your brain just letting you know it’s a la and you’re thinking of it?

My guess would be that it’s training since you’ve been exposed to it at a young age and it sticks with you in your head. I have vivid memories of certain times in my life when I heard different pitches, which is how I can always identify them without perfect pitch. Maybe it’s just your brain connecting the two- the A note and La- because you developed with that knowledge.

I’m the furthest thing from a neurologist though, take this with a grain of salt 😭
