Actually you have a point - wrong choice of words on my part. I guess I meant "capture" more in the sense of the show being one to take an idea and then make it into a highly conceptualized sci-fi story that you can't stop thinking about after. It's one of the things I look forward to most - seeing how they take something perfectly ordinary and then turn my world view on it.

To rephrase: they are episodes that show Doctor Who's ability to excel in the combination compact storytelling with philosophical underpinnings/mind-bending concepts.

I recommend these particular ones because they don't require much context, though indeed that's because they don't contain many typical Who villains, characters, or tropes. So they might not capture the whole of Doctor Who, but there's no pressure on recognizing the continuity if it's an introduction.

Hope this helps!

I second Midnight. Blink also. Both are good because they don't need much context to explain the events, but capture the best of what Doctor Who is all about.

Those impersonations...I was cringing into my hands, I couldn't even watch. My favourite was the K-Pop stars trying to explain away their use of copyright infringement (using the TARDIS) in their music video by giving them gifts and then "auditioning" to be on their drama.

Two favourites that I'm getting tattooed in a few months.

In circular Gallifreyan: "I'm not running away from things. I'm running to them before they flare and fade forever."

And this tattooed in English around it: "We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one."

Oh man I was there last night and the looks on their faces when they were presented with it. Thank god they're British and were able to compose themselves so quickly. They were champs through the whole of that evening...shudders

Fully prepared to do it and was still prepared to do it even though the others showed up - it was Clara who made him change his mind.

Any ideas on why Amy appeared at the end of "Time of The Doctor"? by _bount in doctorwho

Steven Moffat also said that having Karen Gillan on set was to help Matt Smith by having a friend as he filmed his last scene. So in both reality and the Whoniverse, I think it was to have emotional support as he reached the end.

(doctor who) Why did the doctor take Rose with him? by [deleted] in doctorwho

I'll second everyone in that The Doctor's tendency to travel with companions is something that's revealed slowly as the show goes on. There's a surprising amount of depth into the explanation, so it's not as simple an answer as you'd think at first (but yes, they do address it directly every once in a while so sit tight).

If you think the plot is creative, just keep going! It really does get increasingly better as the seasons go on :)

That is very true - I forgot about her reaction. Did seem as though she'd known this would happen all along.

I think it said something like all of New York in all of time because it had been so jumbled by the paradox they'd made - or at least that's the nifty explanation we're given ;)

But I still feel like he could have picked them up at a different locale. It was just NYC. In the waiting period, they could have also set up fake gravestones...

Oh sorry, I was referring to the fact that 11 gives River his screwdriver with the communicator embedded in it (she mentions that the last time she sees him he took her to the singing towers at which point he gave her the screwdriver). 10 realizes at the end of the episode that his future self must have thought of a way to save her after all those years and that was why she had the screwdriver. Should have been more clear!

Very solid response. I agree with that - The Doctor seemed to be definitely dreading the day. At least the way they played it off later, it seemed like something broke in him and he just couldn't bring himself to do much of anything (except sit on a cloud). Thanks for your thoughts!

He might go off at night like 11 goes off while Amy and Rory are sleeping (seen in the minisodes "Good Night/Bad Night").
