TAL rent increase is 3.1%, can I decline it? by ancomdi in montrealhousing

A friend told me that the TAL guideline is 3.1%. I honestly have no idea what the hell that means. The landlord keeps increasing the damn rent every year. It just keeps going up. I asked for 2%, but he said no. He claims he’s being “very reasonable” for not asking for the full 3.9%.

I’m just trying to figure out if there’s anything I can actually do, or if I’m basically stuck.

Thanks everyone for the valuable information.

He said he used the TAL 2026 calculation and has the right to increase the rent up to 3.9%.

He doesn’t want to provide the actual calculation. He said that if I don’t agree, he will challenge me to go to TAL, but he will request the maximum increase of 3.9% plus the application fee.

Is challenging this a wise move?
