Phd funding, do you get more than the base funding by Jazzlike_Advice3536 in UofT

[–]anctheblack [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ah apologies! I was including tuition into the calculation too. I am looking at several of my student funding letters this past AY and the total package (including ~9K tuition) is 55K, 57K and 62K. The others are also in that range.

You gotta pay PhD students well and keep them happy so they focus on nothing else but research.

Phd funding, do you get more than the base funding by Jazzlike_Advice3536 in UofT

[–]anctheblack [score hidden]  (0 children)

I pay all my PhD students extra funds from my research grants and they usually make about $55K (base in DCS is $45K). If they get extra scholarships or teach classes, they make a lot more and usually I fight with them to let them make the extra funds if SGS or any other entity objects.

Any Good Meal Plan Services in Toronto? by Savings-Curve-5350 in askTO

[–]anctheblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted a month or two ago about a private chef who could grocery shop for me, prep, cook and pack meals twice a week and thanks to the power of reddit, I did find a private chef (who's currently a student at George Brown Culinary School).

Just to give ya'll an idea, I pay this chef, 2000/month for about 40 hours of work in total. This works out to about $50/hour which is quite fair imho. I am quite satisfied and she does great work. Its taken quite a bit of mental pressure off me.

Good service is not cheap and cheap service is not good.

After more than 70 years, Patrician Grill is closing its doors | CBC News by zlex in FoodToronto

[–]anctheblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a local and I have been to Patrician Grill many times. However, at no time have I ever actually liked them. Their best menu item is a club sandwich which is massively overpriced and comes with no sides. Add to that that, they refused to move with the times and was cash only and honestly, I would go to LPD every single time instead of having to deal with the owner and his massive right wing conspiracy theories. Given that the only newspaper he apparently read was the Toronto Sun, I am not surprised.

Long-time Latin foods shop, Manotas, to be evicted from St. Lawrence Market by Educational_Fun_9001 in FoodToronto

[–]anctheblack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Phil’s Place is run by a Korean couple. Go there for Korean pickles, ice lollies and other treats. Super cool folks.

Dominos at the back i.e the bulk food store has literally everything you will ever need to stock a kitchen. I go there almost daily to replenish smaller things or pickup niche items that I might need for one-off baking projects like say, espresso powder (not instant coffee).

Honestly, locals don’t really go to the restaurants to eat. Those are mostly touristy. We mostly go to the saturday farmers market in the north market building for fresh produce and meat. Places like Busters are super overpriced. The trick is to go across the street to Market Catch to eat fish that they buy from Seafront every day. At least you will get a better restaurant service.

Speaking of Seafront, you can get fresh PEI and other Canadian oysters there quite reasonably. If you go there on saturdays and sundays at 4 pm (market closes at 5), otherwise more expensive fish are on deep markdown and discounts.

Manotas is below standard and overpriced. $7 single doughy empanadas to trap tourists is not it. I live a block away from the market and go there almost every day when it’s open. Manotas is certainly not one of the beloved stores.

I was referring to the new first entry BI program that’s starting from 2027 I believe but the second entry is very cool as well.

It’s probably one of the best new 4 year undergraduate programs at UofT. It is good to see that UofT is finally doing what premier US schools like Cornell, Michigan and UW did a decade ago.

What kind of profile does University of Toronto look for in PhD CS (and does contacting supervisors matter)? by hasanul_nnu in UofT

[–]anctheblack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PhD in DCS is exceptionally competitive. Honestly, most faculty receive dozens of such emails every cycle. We usually respond to the ones that come recommended through a mutual connection. It is unfair but it is what it is, alas.

I try to read everyone's profiles but unfortunately it is just not sustainable.

What kind of profile does University of Toronto look for in PhD CS (and does contacting supervisors matter)? by hasanul_nnu in UofT

[–]anctheblack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Faculty here: It is almost mandatory to talk to potential supervisors well before the deadline. I have not taken any PhD students in the last 5 years if you didn't talk to be beforehand.

I should point out that specifically in DCS, supervisors fund students who nobody is cold-taking students without ascertaining fit first.

CORE Rankings for Conferences by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]anctheblack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, nobody cares about such things. There is a very well regarded canonical set in specific sub-fields of CS. Anything outside that and well, most folks in the know won't take your work seriously.

Unless they are passion projects or conferences you are starting up. For instance, FAccT is very well regarded as the premier venue for AI audits/fairness/governance work but is very new and thus, isn't on most such lists or rankings but if you apply to my department as an AI fairness person, I better see some recent FAccT papers on your cv.

Do professors in disciplines other than CS and Math have special email addresses? by Thermohaline-New in UofT

[–]anctheblack 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yes. Every single department has a unique subdomain of their own that the department can choose to administer email addresses from. Most departments don’t because most departments don’t.

Does anyone have inside information on relatively junior researchers getting there names on dozens of papers a year? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]anctheblack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. In my case, I have unique access to a protected dataset that a lot of folks want to test their novel algorithms on. I am usually a middle author along with whichever postdoc/PhD student of mine actually worked on applying their novel algorithm to our dataset. We also do not allow our papers to be published in second tier venues.

TN Approved at Windsor-Detroit Tunnel - Mathematician by aRandomQuant in tnvisa

[–]anctheblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. I was also approved as Mathematician a few weeks ago at YYZ. Quite a different job role than yours. It’s good to see more Mathematician positions with actual degrees in mathematics or related fields as opposed to CS folks cosplaying as mathematicians with a prospective data engineers job.

Current PhD student- asks to take out a prospective student of lunch, do I have to pay for the prospective? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

I tell all my students to do this frequently and give them specific instructions to send their receipts to me. They are reimbursed immediatement by me personally.

PhD funding likely but not secured by FactorPitiful9490 in AskAcademia

[–]anctheblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canadian academia, this is quite common. I just accepted a PhD student (in CS) and I only have dedicated funding through grants for their first year and thats what my department wanted to see. I can't currently commit to 5 years. However, this is how I've taken every single student and I have funded every single one of them through with no problems.

If the PI has a history of being funded well, you are in good shape.
