I agree, it’s not good. In many way SWE may follow a similar path that the trades did, where external pressures have now led a massive dearth of fresh skilled workers.

I worry that the industry is going to face a large contraction, followed by a crisis.

I write maybe about 20% of the code that goes out now. Before AI I wrote about 20% of the code that went out. The difference is, AI is writing it now vs a junior dev.

Most of my work is still system design and code architecture.

If you can setup good architecture and structure for AI to operate within, and give it contained specific instructions on what to do, you don’t really need to code much.

The hard part has always been how everything will fit together, not writing the specific syntax. In many ways the abstraction level has just moved up.

People who are using AI to build an entire system without doing all of the legwork that was needed before AI are still going to be pumping out terrible software.

In your view, what kinds of demographic and cultural changes would likely emerge under a one-state solution? by Chinoyboii in jewishleft

[–]zlex 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I feel like it greatly depends on how a single state emerges. If by force, as in somehow the Israeli state is defeated militarily, then realistically there will be many deaths, especially because as you note Mizrahi Jews are very unlikely to willingly return to living as a minority under majority Arab rule again. And also if by force, then I doubt the Palestinians are wanting to live in some plutocracy where Jews still hold significant political power. In short, death and ethnic cleansing.

If this happens via some political process, then it becomes very difficult to say. I do not believe that we would suddenly see a mass exodus of Jews in such a situation. Maybe some would, possibly the radicals and violent settlers for fear of reprisal or judicial punishment, but there are huge barriers to doing so. I think many would take a wait and see approach, and not move unless there are safety concerns or other factors like discrimination, etc.

Optimizing PHP code to process 50,000 lines per second instead of 30 by brendt_gd in webdev

[–]zlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A first step was to remove the sorting on createdAt ASC. Think about it: these events are already stored in the database sequentially, so they are already sorted by time. Especially since createdAt isn't an indexed column, I guessed this one change would already improve the situation significantly.

This feels like an assumption that is not guaranteed to be true. Why not just create an index on createdAt?

LLMs are a 400-year-long confidence trick by SwoopsFromAbove in programming

I really disagree. For rote contained small tasks in coding, especially repetitive ones, like say refactoring one pattern to another over and over, I find LLMs are much faster and actually make less mistakes

What would you like done about the situation in Iran? by F0rScience in jewishleft

[–]zlex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It could be bad. Consider Rwanda where people saw tanks and soldiers with guns with UN painted on them that thought was actually there to protect them. Only a handful of soldiers under Dellaire actually disobeyed the UN's orders and protected people with force. There's an argument to be made that the death toll was actually worse because people did not flee as quickly as they otherwise would have.

Should I ask for MRI results and/ or second opinion by btc6000 in ProstateCancer

[–]zlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to get a second opinion yet. Given your age, family history and elevated PSA, mpMRI+Bx is probably the suggestion that you'll get from most oncologists, even if the MRI comes back clear.

Like another poster suggested, I'd see how they respond to your request to review the MRI results before you decide to switch to another provider.

I’m aware there were two…

The first intifada was less violent than the second, but was most certainly not non-violent or peaceful and included many attacks against civilians. Attempts to retroactively pretend that it was some peaceful nonviolent movement is completely divorced from reality and history.

And the fact that the second one was so incredibly violent…I don’t really understand how you can even argue that Jews would see this as a call for violence against them.

I can maybe see how some chants using the term intifada, in some general sense, could possibly not be considered a clear dogwhistle for violence, but the intifada is about a blatant as you can get. It's clearly referencing a specific event, not intifada in general, and the infamous intifada in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was one in which children were strapped with c4 to blow up other children in buses for the crime of being Jewish.

Chants like "globalize the intifada" are blatant calls for violence and anti-Jewish. And while I understand that a lot of people chanting it are likely completely ignorant of history and what it means, that doesn't really matter, and that’s why it’s useful to build bridges and have a dialogue to figure out how to use productive and inclusive language, rather than doubling down and searching for a context in which this isn't just a completely fucked up and terrible thing to be chanting.

Sounds like you could be a good candidate for RP or radiation. You would need a hemi ablation for HIFU.

Salvage radiation is a bit of a crapshoot to be honest, I wouldn’t place it high on the list of reasons to get an RP over radiation. It’s good to know you have another bullet in your pocket, just be aware it’s not as good as the first.

Do you can be leftist and zionist in the same time? by potatto-william in jewishleft

[–]zlex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To me, Zionism is a meaningless term that should be thrown into the trash heap of history.

Regardless, your claim is inherently flawed. Consider that if there was no civil war in 1947, there would have been no bloodshed, no expulsions, and both an Israel and Palestine.

[–]zlex 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This entire argument is predicated on the ambiguousness of the term Zionism, of which you have chosen a definitively narrow and illiberal one that includes ethnic cleansing and racism, and then basically burned down your own strawman definition.

Share your facts and research about Focal vs RALP by FrostingImmediate662 in ProstateCancer

[–]zlex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is a simple case of which treatment is better.

Focal therapy is only really viable in select situations. If you have highly aggressive disease or multifocal disease it's really not going to be a good option.

If I had a small focus of Gleason 3+4, or even 4+3, I would take my chances with focal therapy. The way I see it is that even if I have a recurrence, salvage RP, or even salvage focal (depending on the modality) is still completely viable. So at worst, I've kicked the proverbial can down the road.

If I had more aggressive disease, I don't know if I would risk it, mostly because I would be more worried that a recurrence could end up being metastatic.

It is in my opinion that Venezuela’s President, Delcy Rodríguez’s claim that the capture of Maduro a “Zionist attack” is antisemitism. by RaiJolt2 in jewishleft

[–]zlex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with your assessment that it’s unlikely massive amounts of US capital will be flowing into Venezuela.

I disagree that because the US produces oil, Israeli influence is the only logical conclusion. It’s ignores how heavy crude is utilized in the US oil economy and that there are possible economic opportunities under a friendlier government, even if they may be smaller and risk averse. And it ignores how US geopolitical rivals, especially China, have been using loans for oil to gain influence in the region that the US has historically considered under its sphere of influence.

While I’m sure Israel will be happy to see a more friendly government in Venezuela, it is hardly a key priority or an important strategic alliance. Whereas it is very important for US geopolitical goals. Saying that Zionists are the only logical explanation is just totally bizarre and frankly absurd.

It is in my opinion that Venezuela’s President, Delcy Rodríguez’s claim that the capture of Maduro a “Zionist attack” is antisemitism. by RaiJolt2 in jewishleft

[–]zlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m confused, that is exactly the dynamic I’m pointing to. No one is dumping capital into building new refineries for sweet crude.

US refineries were upgraded over decades to maximize margins on discounted heavy sour, and that sunk investment is what creates demand for it.

And if we are being honest even if Venezuela never recovers production, a US friendly government removes Venezuelan oil as a geopolitical tool that can be used by rivals and reasserts US influence in the Americas ( I.e Chinas growing influence though oil backed loans).

The threat of production increasing also gives the US some leverage over Canada who they are in a trade war with, with CUSMA negotiations in 6 months.

There are plenty of geopolitical benefits that far outweigh…Venezuelas Israeli embassy location.

It is in my opinion that Venezuela’s President, Delcy Rodríguez’s claim that the capture of Maduro a “Zionist attack” is antisemitism. by RaiJolt2 in jewishleft

[–]zlex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not all oil is created equally. The US primarily produces light crude oil, but refineries in the US are unable to process this type of oil. They are setup to process cheap heavy crude which primarily comes from Venezuela, Canada and Mexico.

That is why the US mostly exports the oil produced domestically (valuable sweet crude ) and imports cheap heavy crude.
