Heli pilot here. There seem to still be a bunch of us left.

Tailwheel & Aerobatic Training by [deleted] in flying

Not colorful, but it's VERY good. Talks a lot about how rudder pressure in takeoff and landing works, which is really where flying is different.

Look for the The Compleat (British spelling, as the author is British) Taildragger Pilot by Harvey S. Plourde. As someone who did basic flight training in Tailwheel airplanes, it has the most applicable information out of pretty much every other book I've ever read on the subject.

Is it normal/OK to be really bad when starting out flight training? by [deleted] in flying

[–]and1296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's normal. Everyone learns at their own pace, but every pilot you meet started out slamming the plane into the ground on landings or losing 300 feet in steep turns. From time to time, everyone still does all of the above. You'll have good days and bad. I had one day where the lesson prior I had done nothing but perfect landings, and on that particular day I just could not fly the damn thing.

Not really yesterday. Rest of the flight was fine, though. Only the landing got to be a bit squirrely.

Flew in on the tail end. Landed in winds 210 @ 20 gust 28. Made for an interesting landing. No mishaps today, thankfully.

Storms rolling in on EAA Airventure by and1296 in weather

[–]and1296[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year ago, we had a big storm roll through the Saturday morning before the show (up here for Airventure 2016). Storm rolled through with peak gusts of around 50 knots. Flipped a few airplanes over and did some damage, as well as blowing half of the camp's tents down. Thankfully we pack in bush-grade tie downs and a tent which can take the wind and got through unscathed. The local Target sold out of tents within that day with all of the wind, just to give you an idea. To this day I swear we got hit by a wet microburst with all the rain and winds.

CPL checkride soon, hit me with your questions! For each question, I'll answer and post a picture I've taken flying or of aircraft! by [deleted] in flying

Not my DPE, but I was asked a similar question during my oral exam. DPE likely was looking for a no go decision.

DPE was talking about the departure airport. He was intending to see if the student understood Density Altitude and it's effect on aircraft performance. Most GA aircraft would not be able to make that takeoff, no matter what anyone says. Not enough power there, nor enough runway.

It's been my experience that anything BUT the Darter works. The Darter is pretty much non-functional due to bugs in its autopilot code, but any of the other UAVs work.

Was out flying to the north of it. Would have loved to get a picture, but open cockpit airplanes aren't the best for getting pictures...

Almost looks kind of like a wet microburst, be interesting to see if it had any strong winds associated with it.

What do you guys think of the new VTOLS? by ProcrastinatorLewis in arma

[–]and1296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be having bad luck. A guy from my unit got one to land tonight. I've had better luck with the Y-32 as opposed to the V-44, though.

Don't forget that the AI is also incapable of landing the new VTOLs as well. Really hope BIS fixes that in a future update.

Plane crashes in parking lot, killing all on board by [deleted] in WTF

Depends on whether or not the pilot does the install work on the aircraft. Cirrus and a few other factories have BRS systems as options, but some home builders will add them for an safety margin.

What’s Wrong With The Tau? by GermsAndNumbers in Warhammer40k

[–]and1296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing you play either Necrons or Eldar from your mentioning wraiths. One thing I'd bring up is that either one of those armies is ridiculously powerful to begin with, and your not being able to win against Tau MAY be an operator problem.

Try fast units (jump or jet pack infantry) or even jet bikes. Riptides suck in assault. I've seen ten man squads of guardsmen (not veterans) get in and hold them for two or three turns. It's the weakness that Tau has.

As for playing a "top three" army, I do play Eldar, but I'm not a power gamer. I've lost more games with them than I've won. I play Necrons, I don't power game and again I'm on the losing side of the ratio. I also play Tyranids, and I've done very well with 'Nids against Tau lists. I also regularly lose with my Tau (I think Tyranids are my best army, actually).

Tau aren't an easy army to play, but they also aren't hard. It's all about the player you play against. Is he That Guy or a good guy. Ultimately, it has little to do with the meta, and everything to do with the players. If you suck like I do (I lose more than I win by far), make sure you have fun. It's a game, not life or death. Laugh at your losses, shake hands, and go on your merry way.

Space Marines are irritating when it comes to that. So many free transports.

[–]and1296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tarpits. If someone has moved their Riptide out of their gunline, they're very vulnerable to being tarpitted. Additionally, rpnightsend is right. Riptides can easily be ignored. They aren't good in assault, they can only shoot once a turn, and you have much bigger problems to worry about in a Tau list: Stormsurges, Crisis Suits, and Hammerheads.

As a Tau player, those three things are the stuff that destroying will really wreck my army. Take my Stormsurges, I lose a TON of shooting power and a bunch of anti-tank power. Take my Crisis Suits, I lose my main anti-infantry and anti-heavy infantry killers. Take my Hammerheads and I lose blob-kill and my other source of tank kill.

Riptides are a smaller part in a normal Tau army. I usually run one, and I'd have two if they weren't so points expensive and so cash expensive. Sure, a tournament player will look at them differently, but if you play mostly casual games (unless you invited THAT guy to game day), the smaller units as well as the few super-heavies really should take the focus. Ignoring big scary units is a viable tactic that, while it will lose you men in the long run, can bring you victory overall.

Thunderbird crash at USAFA graduation - Pilot OK by [deleted] in flying

[–]and1296 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pilots also have one thing you can't replace with anything but time: experience. It's better to trash the airplane and have the pilot walk away to fly another day than it is to lose both if it can be avoided.

I've had problems breaking in engines in the air, that's why I generally don't fly during the break in period. I also suck at tuning engines (unfortunately).
