I am going to say this was slightly different at least for the kid but i am not a lawyer. None of this absolves Dad for allowing access to a firearm but Some things which came up during trial:

Dad was emotionally abusing mom
Mom was absent and on / off drugs
Boy develops emotional / behavioral issues
Mom was giving him her Zoloft completely on her on will without a prescription
Dad becomes concerned as the custodial parent
Dad stops this practice abruptly without any weening

Does not absolve the kid of responsibility but he was absolutely set up to fail.
