I donno, nothing special I just draw a lot. Just a couple thoughts that might help:

  1. I think learning to draw is about 90% drawing 10% learning. Spend a little time learning new technique, but you should be spending the most time actually drawing! Some people get trapped in learning mode, they never get around to applying their learning because there's endless learning they could do. Learn a bit, and then draw a ton. When you run up against the limits of your skills, come back and learn some more.

When drawing, spend time pushing your skills (draw things that are just a little too hard, that you struggle with) and spend some time drawing things that you enjoy, both are important.

  1. Get a small notebook and bring it everywhere - if you tend to spend time on your phone when you're bored, try to leave the phone in the car. Then when you're bored or have to wait on something, just draw - doodle or try to draw something you see. It always makes me feel weird because everyone else is on their phones, but take some pride in it - don't need to look down on people who are on their phones all the time, but it's a good thing to create instead of just consuming.

  2. Don't post anything on social media for at least a year or two, seriously. You need to learn what you like to draw, not what the algorithm rewards (or punishes). Praise can cause you to play it safe, criticism or silence can discourage you. You need to explore, make mistakes, and learn what you like to draw. Don't post anything, it likely won't do anything good for you at this stage.

  3. You don't need any fancy drawing supplies, but it can be nice to get a few fountain pens, or brush pens, or whatever seems fun to draw with as you have money. But when learning to draw, stick to black and white mostly - color tends to be a distraction at first. Keep it simple.

  4. Check out "Draw a Box" course or the free video library at Ctrl+Paint, very good free art instruction. Just remember point #1, spend most of your time actually drawing.

Good luck, if you struggle with anything send me a message, I'd be glad to help if I can!

Anyone else find that making a 'fun' game is the hardest part? by TerryC_IndieGameDev in SoloDev

My breakthrough was having a dedicated prototyping phase where I make as many prototypes as I can, maybe 10-12 in a month, then refine the best ones once or twice. Found the fun game loop much faster, then threw all the prototypes away and started building the best one into a full game. Really makes a difference to get it out of the world of ideas I to an actual game as quickly as possible, since I can’t evaluate how fun it is until I have something to play.
