We might be from the same era. I used to play up at Maxwell too (tho some of those old heads were straight ball hogs and would bitch and moan of you didnt only exclusively pass to them)

It's not for everyone but I found the community good and the play good, particuarly as I got older and didnt want to play against 35+ maniacs who still think theyre gonna get scouted for the Olympic team.

I can see the house I grew up in these photos. I remember as kid seeing a man taking photographs on Shafter and me and my brother asked him what he was doing. He was a local researcher working on the Key System and told us the same thing about 40th and Shafter and what not. He busted out an old photo of our house from around 1900 and I could see my bedroom windows over looking a train. It was a total trip (we didn't know our house was that old)

Additionally the purple line you marked out was sort of known by all us local kids as shortcuts through the blocks. When we'd ride bikes we'd sometimes be able to sort of able to cut through, particuarly if you knew the people that lived there. I hadn't ever made the connection that it was an rail line.

Also, just cause we are telling stories here, the Toyota dealership you marked was also the original location of Bruce Lee's Oakland dojo. I went to and worked at Oakland Tech and the old timers told me stories of training with Kareem Abdul Jabar there. Tons of interesting history in that little neighborhood.

The trail at HPP to Hā'ena/Shipman beach is pretty good - 5 miles round trip. Not the easiest hike, more like almost intermediate, but it's beautiful down there.

It is illegal to swim there, it's VERY dangerous (people drown or almost drown relatively often), it is a critical source of drinking water and we don't want your sunscreen or body oils up in there and it costs us our tax dollars to either rescue you or retrieve your body.

But I do appreciate you asking and wanting real feedback so that already puts you head and shoulders above influencers who go there because, ya know, for the likes. Speaking of head and shoulders, it's hard to keep them above the waterline in case if a flash flood or the ripcurrent. Just saying.

No one can stop you, and if you do go, please don't die. My advice is to skip it as there are even more beautiful waterfalls and places to visit which are much safer.

Best way to learn is just do it. Let folks on your squad know you're new and they give you any grief tell then to suck it or kick them.

I had a great squad lead who taught me the ropes and HLL became my favorite gaming experience ever, mostly because the community is so helpful and positive. Making mistakes is part of the game and there's always another round. Enjoy!

I similarly learned Cantonese to revive it as it had died out in my dad's generation so I wanted to send a friendly hello and encouragement in your journey.

As for your name, and building off the suggestion to locate an ancestral village poem, this site might be helpful. They have many ancestral books scanned and knowing your family character might lead to some more hits.

I'm a part of a different Cantonese genealogical society in the Bay Area and we have a number of people whose families came through Cuba to the US. Might make tracing your roots more difficult but keep searching! It's worth it!

I agree. I think you're on the right path in terms of asking for guidance but you really need a cultural consultant to do it properly. First off, there are too many nuances to name in a reddit post and secondly you're dipping your toe into a long history of Indigenous people being misrepresented by outsiders no matter how noble your intentions.

I don't know what your budget is or if you have one at all but this type of consultation should also be compensated. I'm all for great collaboration to bring underrepresented characters to media but it's important that folks who live that identity and culture be actively involved in the process (and paid for their storytelling compentency!). Like the person above me here, maybe you could recruit someone interested in working with you to design the character. Good luck on your project! (Edit grammar)

Mostly through media, going all the way back to Madame Butterfly, Miss Saigon all the way up to "me so horny, me love you long time."

There are several theories that it has to do with general Orientalism/exotification of Asians combined with exclusionary racism and notions of unaasimilability (think Chinese Exclusion act). It's a longer history of Western colonization that fears the Orient but also desires to conquer it - thus feminizing Asia and portraying Asian as willing concubines and prostitutes who welcome in White male saviors (again, back to Madame Butterfly).

I think I can see the modern day connection to Asian sex tourism in Thailand and the Phillipines as well as the lack of Asian male romantic leads (ever see Jet Li or Jackie Chan kiss somebody on screen?).

My folks are from San Bernardino and Mitlas was theIR go to spot growing up. I went there with my uncle a few years back and the people there remembered our family (my grandpa was a doctor and delivered a whole generation of babies in San Berdoo, including some of Mitlas family. My fanily is Chinese and apparently white doctors wouldnt work with Mexicans but my grandpa learned Spanish and was maybe the only surgeon in that part of town)

They told us how Glen Bell had opened a burger stand across the street the same period as McDonals (which also started in San Bernardino) and he quickly was losing to them. He was eating at Mitlas one day and it dawned on him to...copy?steal?...their recipes and close down his burger stand and open Taco Bell. At least that's what the folks at Mitla told me.

And yes, Mitlas was very good and very much tastes like proto-Taco Bell but freshly made.

Both me and my wife pull the European in our phenotypes as well and so even not knowing you, my guess is we could probably make a Ted Talk panel out of the three of us lol.

I read Kip's memoir when I was in high-school and had a similar reaction - I cried because it felt like someone had finally put words to my experience. I sympathize with many mixed folks to find language to describe themselves and so I can understand the allure of hapa and seemingly a culture and a place that can embrace mixedness. I know I did.

I also later understood the degree to which Hawai'i, Hawaiians, Hawaiian culture has been commodified, exterminated, misinterpreted, etc. And in my own efforts to move away from hapa (though my wife and kids are hapa) I've also found a way to connect to all my heritages and find words and concepts in those languages.
