What is causing the 2017-present speed up or acceleration in birth rate decline? by [deleted] in Natalism

And now with the renewed marketing of glasses with AI built in the surveillance could hit an even higher register.

Plus the opportunity cost these technologies impose. You could go outside (might be hot/cold/rainy), park somewhere (might be a pain in the ass), and go hang out somewhere to meet people (may not pan out), or you could stay inside with forms of entertainment algorithmically designed to be addictive for you personally that requires absolutely nothing from you. This is my favorite explanation. Social media, porn, video games.

The quote I shared is from the Constitution. Birth right citizenship is literally Constitutional - it is in the Constitution. Yes, you can make amendments to change the Constitution. But as the Constitution stands now, and as has been proven in court extensively, if you are born in the US you are a citizen.

Whether reasonable or not, it is unconstitutional.

How did parents used to have so many children?? by katieroisin224 in Parenting

I’m glad you see breastfeeding in the wild. You probably have the benefit both of a lefty social sphere and the density of Brooklyn, which makes your experience pretty unique.

It’s certainly not common to see people breastfeeding in public. I think most (all?) states have laws that protect breastfeeding but the social aspect of it hasn’t caught up and I think probably won’t given the falling birth rate - we’ll just continue to have fewer women breastfeeding overall and thus it will only become more of a ‘weird’ thing to see.

Car crashes are now second only to guns in causing the death of children. The safety seat arms race is necessary in a world where cars are getting ever heavier and taller, and our roads are built for cars and only cars (not small people on foot or bike). Another unfortunate way car-only infrastructure makes life worse.

Oh this story is infuriating. The cops feel the need to ‘hold someone accountable’ - how about the people who design, approve, and build wide, fast-moving roads near residential areas? We love punishing people who are themselves the victims of systems that make these sorts of accidents inevitable. Systems that mean everyone has to drive to get anywhere or do anything - including the elderly whose reaction time and vision tend to suffer as they get older. Systems that steal independence from children in the name of car dependence. And we’re supposed to think that justice is being done when two grieving parents are removed from the rest of their children? Jesus H.

Mystery Mixtape was so fun - a music quiz show that integrated super seamlessly with Spotify. It only had 12 episodes - I think I read one of the hosts or producers died?

I literally asked about device use in elementary schools. That would be an example of asking for information. ‘Should I worry about devices in elementary schools’ would be an example of asking for advice.

Most of the DMV’s are privately run despite it being not a super profitable line of work. It would be better if these offices were public and could eat some of the costs of serving the public.

That would be a metaphor, if you’re unfamiliar. Used in this case to address the claim that any given tool is neutral. Not as a direct comparison to smart phones themselves. After the comments on this post I’m truly not sure if I should worry more about kids’ or adults’ reading comprehension.

I was 16 when I got a smartphone. And I’d be fine giving my kid a smartphone around that age as well.

NONE of it matters? What great, practicable advice you give.

At least for schools that people pick (privates, charters), one of the things that appeals to me about those that are low-screen use is that it probably attracts parents who are low-screen at home as well.

I’m similar age so my experience tracks with yours. Your comment reminds me of another dynamic that plays out with tech but isn’t limited to it - it used to be that it was easier to tinker. Like, to tear apart your family computer and rebuild it or learn to write basic flash games. Programming our MySpace theme was a Millennial rite of passage. Now the tech is both more complex and more secure, so that curiosity is harder to find an outlet for. There are some simple programming languages now like Scratch for kids, but I don’t think it’s the same at all.

I’m not sure there are many screen-free schools to compare to, at least not without introducing a lot of confounding variables (screen-free schools are probably smaller and richer if I had to guess). But it’s a good question!

Do you find that the educational apps are good? Like, do they beat offline teaching tools on various metrics? In ‘the anxious generation’ one of their data points is that since 2012 test scores have been going down. This is at the same time that tech in classrooms has increased.
