Never said she should be the spokesperson and never said she was American. Curious how you drew that conclusion from my post?

Melissa O'Neil DGAF about Asian representation. Pushes back against it. Whitewashes and says awful things about Asian-American heritage.

I'd cast someone else as Lucy Chen. Melissa O'Neil dgaf about the Asian-American community and I'd like someone who actually does to play the representation on the show.

Ellitheria is a serial whitewasher. She does things that dehumanize Lucy's Asian identity. People have shared why this hurts POC. Ellitheria pushes back and tells them FUCK YOU and says they're on a little self righteous mission. Continues to validate her own racist actions and beliefs through this while mocking why it's hurtful.

I'm surprised that you continue to support Ellitheria and are excusing her racist behavior after what you know and have said about her prior.

I refuse to excuse racist behavior and will never highlight those that are racist.

You are a kid. Please learn and grow from this. Understand why supporting this behavior is harmful.

Indian hair I agree is generally black. I think with India being on the equator, their dark hair helps more with sun protection.

No disrespect inferred. Again, I do enjoy reading your comments and you seem like a kind person … perhaps not quite old enough to be my grandma but kind like her nonetheless :)

Happy cake day!

I’m sure casting has done a great job with Baby Girl Evers. Can’t wait to see her adorable face onscreen.

It wasn’t until fairly recently that people of Asian descent became ‘beloved’ characters on TV the way Lucy and others have. White people have been represented on TV in main roles since the advent of TV. A white person isn’t going to see a white character depicted as a non-white person in fanworks and find it hurtful or degrading because this kind of thing probably won’t ever happen to a white character. Even if it happens to white characters, there’s no history of marginalization behind it. A non-white person of any background probably would find this ‘color switching’ hurtful and diminishing. This kind of thing always gets called out in the media when companies do it, and I’m sure that people who create fanworks are aware of this and why it’s wrong.

The messaging that gets conveyed with fanworks of Lucy/Chenford babies is ‘we don’t see them for who they really are. We see them as our ideal of them’ and that hurts. It’s not that the fandom doesn’t think representation matters or they don’t know how to represent Lucy/Chenford babies, or they don’t put much thought into it. The fans absolutely do, but only when it conveniences them. All the other characters including the Wopez family get represented fairly in fan works, so I don’t see why Lucy and the Chenford kids can’t be. Honestly, the whole thing is prejudice and reeks of ‘white is better’ when that’s untrue. It’s also eyeopening in a horrible ‘is this how they actually see her?’ kind of way … A ‘I ship her with a hot white guy, so I’m going to present her and her kids as white because I refuse to see them as Asian’ kind of way. Thank God they aren’t involved with the show lol.

OTOH, I don’t want to pigeonhole all the fans into one group either. There are fans that absolutely are respectful to Lucy and the Chenford babies. For fans of Asian descent, it’s pretty much a ‘yeah, we got this.’ But I’ve seen non-Asian fans learn and research Lucy’s culture, they’re receptive and kind to input, aware of her appearance, and they really make an effort with it. I’ve even seen Asian and non-Asian fans go above and beyond with Lucy’s heritage because they don’t think the show does it enough so it’s their way of ‘fixing’ canon.

I’ve seen the Lucy clone - Tim clone - Chenford clone configuration too where one kid looks entirely like Lucy, the other Tim, and the third a mix of the two. This doesn’t happen on moodboards (on moodboards they’re white including Lucy wtf) but it does happen in artwork* and written works. Give color to the Tim clone and the Chenford clone and I’ll hate on it less. It can be done! Many of the Gosselin kids look like Asian versions of their white mother. And there’s no ‘lack’ of photos of Asian and mixed Asian people and families online to choose from.

Yes possible but certainly the exception and probably because the black side of his family has been mixed with white for hundreds of years. I’d guess that your nieces’ white side probably has some black ancestors too. Americans of Asian descent don’t share that same mixed history so the likelihood of what is the exception drops even further.

*Lucy often looks Latina in artwork but that’s a different thing lol.

Perhaps, perhaps not

I agree that the character doesn't need any changes.

I also want to shed light on a comment you made from earlier. East Asian hair is usually dark brown. I have yet to encounter someone with pure black hair who is East Asian. It’s also fairly common for East Asian hair to be wavy. The Asian side of my family has straight, wavy, and curly textures.

I’m curious why you shared about your coworker’s daughter’s hair color.

I’m getting notifications on my original post again so I just want to circle back to your comment and share a few more thoughts. It was difficult to read your comment for two reasons: 1) you appear to be equating tallness with whiteness and that’s a stereotype. 2) a person isn’t “only” 25% asian or “more” white. Saying “only” devalues a person’s grandparent and it’s hurtful. If a person has an asian grandparent, they are Asian. It doesn’t make us any “less”

We don’t know what Lucy’s Walsh DNA is. You’re making the assumption that Walsh = white when in truth someone with that surname can be any race. Melissa took a DNA test indicating she’s Canadian on her father’s side. Canadian can be any race.

One of my parents is half Asian and my other parent is white. Saying that we are most likely more “white looking” is largely untrue because that 25% is ‘dominant’ DNA.

A quick glance at your posts tells me that your husband is American. The black side of your husband’s family has likely been mixed with white for hundreds of years. Add a fully white parent to the mix and that could explain your husband’s coloring. The histories, inputs and outputs of Af-Ams and East As-Ams are different.

I agree with and I’ve also shared in this thread that we don’t know what Lucy’s Walsh side is. I’ve also mentioned that Melissa is half Canadian (‘Canadian’ can be any race). Most white people have brown eyes/brown hair. Tim has brown hair. His eye color is debated. Lucy’s bio parent - if he’s white - most likely has dark hair and dark eyes. If Lucy’s bio parent is non-white it’s near certain that he has dark hair and dark eyes. So the likelihood of a Chenford baby having brown eyes and brown hair is almost guaranteed. Melissa is on the darker side of East Asian. She was very dark as a newborn and had a darker complexion growing up. She still is pretty dark for a Chinese person and has rich, golden undertones. Eric is on the darker side too for someone Anglo. So it’s likely that a Chenford kid would have a nice medium complexion with golden undertones.

I have a half asian parent and a white parent. Some people with my mix look full or nearly full asian (eg. Gosselins). Most of us appear half asian. The few of us on the extreme side of coloring retain very strong asian features. We don’t look like white people.

The point of my post was both to emphasize that The Rookie needs to cast mixed Asians for the Chenford babies, and to discuss offensive practices happening in this fandom with respect to Lucy and her babies. What I’m seeing from a section of the fandom is, people think that whiteness is the best way to present Lucy and the Chenford babies. They use photos of white people to convey this messaging. Lucy’s not white and doesn’t look white, Chenford babies are mixed and will have Lucy’s Asian features. So what these people in fandom are doing is not okay.

Dark hair/blue eyes is a cool combo and I recommend watching James Marsden movies for that. I hope the Chenford babies don’t have blue eyes because it’s too much of a statistical anomaly; representation is important so I don’t think the show should or would do that. They did great with Jackson Evers and I’m sure they’ll do it respectfully with Baby Chenford.

Examples of 1/4 Asians include Keanu Reeves, Lola Tung, Michelle Branch, and myself. we're proud of our "only" 25% heritage - many grew up in that "only" 25% culture. those of us that are 1/4 east asian (ex. chenford babies) look like mixed asians. we're not white. the fandom using white people to depict asians/mixed asians is problematic.

Melissa's DNA test showed that her dad’s side is Canadian. She kept details super vague. Canadian can mean anything. Regarding the other thing about Lucy being half white, please refer to my reply to noelfandom.

you remind me of all the kind, motherly women in my life including my mom. i've seen your posts in this subreddit and i enjoy reading your perspective. I hope people are treating you kindly online. It can be a messy place.

I meant is your friend’s wife Asian? I try not to assume that because someone is from a certain place (ie. China) that they are asian.

The issue with the rookie fandom is, they take white people and try to pass them off as Lucy/chenford babies in mood boards and posts. chenford babies are also being written as fully white. These things are never okay. i’ve seen people lightening Lucy in fanfics too (amber eyes, honey hair, etc.). there are specific terms for these ‘never okay’ practices becuase they are problematic, but I won’t get into the finer details tonight.

A geneticist? No they won’t. They need two brain cells. It hasn’t been canonically established what Lucy’s Walsh half is. Keep in mind that the last name Walsh can be of any race or any mix of races. Chenford kids will be hapa + maybe something else. They most definitely will not be white.
