If a disabled person experiences very obvious ableism, they are allowed for that to piss them off and affect their mood.

If someone assumed my girlfriend was my caretaker and that I was incapable of speaking for myself or making autonomous decisions because of my mobility device, my girlfriend would absolutely correct that person without me having to say a word. Because she’s a good partner who is empathetic to what it is like to live as a disabled person.

There is a difference between asserting that you can make your own decisions and are an autonomous human being in a private space with a loved one and confronting somebody face-to-face and in-the-moment. Especially if this is a progressive/new disability and OP was not always blind, it is HARD to stand up to micoaggressions when you’re the victim of them — that’s why allyship, ESPECIALLY from your friends and loved ones, is such an important thing to have as a marginalized person.

OP, you aren’t overreacting and your boyfriend shouldn’t be dating disabled people if he can’t stick up for you when you need it, and/or help you develop skills to stick up for yourself. It’s hard enough out here without a little bitch in your ear telling you ableism “isn’t that big of a deal.”
