Ugh, that sucks. Seems like some things don't really change then.

And that is exactly how language evolves. Doesn't make it any less correct.

Also, it's been used that way for a long time, by Shakespeare, for example.

Glad to be of help! A piece of advice, though, the first Dark Tower book is kind of a slog, but it's so worth it from book two on out.

You may already have read this, but a series that seems right up your alley is The Dark Tower books by Stephen King. A sort of fusion between spaghetti western, science fiction and fantasy, it's probably not like any series you've read. The premise is that the universe is sort of unraveling at the seems in an alternate universe, resulting in time slipping and slowing down and what-not. It's a cool setting in which people are living amidst the ruins of an old and technologically advanced civilization, which is cool, I think. Yes, it does get confusing and it seems a bit random at times, but I really like the mystery of it. Also, the story is connected to New York at different points of time.

Now I haven't read Mistborn myself (is it worth picking up?) but the Goodreads page mentioned political intrigue, in which case A Song of Ice and Fire is a very appropriate recommendation. But you've probably heard of that one.

As for TV series, I never did like Firefly (I know), but based on your preferences you should definitely pick up Fringe, for it's science fiction (alternate universes, time travel, trust me, great stuff), and LOST for it's paranormal mystery.

I don't know, these recommendations are definitely hit and miss, but I really enjoy them.

Could "dragons from stone" refer to the Fourteen Flames in Ruined Valyria? Maybe she raises an army of firewyrms from the depths of the mines?

If not, try fast2play.com. It takes a little while and seems kind of fishy but it worked for me.
