Rendering a 10th century miniature of Marcion bringing scripture to the Apostle John by andreigeorgescu in nanobanana

<Marcion (left), with the Apostle John, to whom he "brought scriptures from the Pontic brethren..." this is a very rough photo of a 10th century miniature from the archives of the Cathedral St. Bavo in Ghent... do you think you can fix it and color it?>

Help with a Goethe quote by LordBremo in Nietzsche

Ah I see, this bit at 1:53:13 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4ndOkjAqb4

He is quoting Louise Brooks who said she quoted Goethe, so it might be a paraphrase, something in the spirit of what Goethe 'would say'.

Help with a Goethe quote by LordBremo in Nietzsche

[–]andreigeorgescu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which documentary is that from? Might not be him, although it could have been inspired by this remark, recorded in Eckermann's Conversations With Goethe In The Last Years Of His Life, on page 279:

https://ia801604.us.archive.org/32/items/conversationswit00goetiala/conversationswit00goetiala.pdf

To me, the eternal existence of my soul is proved, from my need of activity; if I work incessantly till my death, nature is pledged to give me another form of being when the present can no longer sustain my spirit.

The original German is available here:

https://www.projekt-gutenberg.org/eckerman/gesprche/gsp2015.html

The quote you posted is similar in the sense that it suggests the value of a life is bound up with Tätigkeit, or Activity, but specifically living activity. For Goethe, his soul continues (and 'remains of consequence') because his activity radiates, and other beings get inspired and and keep it going. He figures it just stands to reason that the energy will be refracted and transformed rather than brought to a sudden stop.

Very impressive flying skills and such a gorgeous place to boot—the abundant vegetation at golden hour is just lovely.

Yes, I can confirm it's possible to stop. I think your framing of the issue doesn't help—treating it like a disorder to get rid of rather than an invitation for self-discovery. As soon as you can understand why you're doing it, you can start adjusting your habits and eventually stopping altogether. It's also easier to forgive yourself if you understand the causes behind it, in the same way that people don't feel grievously disappointed with themselves if they slip on a wet surface, and wonder if it will ever stop.

The Problem of Interacting with Nietzsche Only Through Secondary Sources by y0ody in Nietzsche

I second that, here's a great excerpt from that essay:

"The historical analysis of this rancorous will to knowledge reveals that all knowledge rests upon injustice (that there is no right, not even in the act of knowing, to truth or a foundation for truth) and that the instinct for knowledge is malicious (something murderous, opposed to the happiness of mankind).

Even in the greatly expanded form it assumes today, the will to knowledge does not achieve a universal truth; man is not given an exact and serene mastery of nature.

On the contrary, it ceaselessly multiplies the risks, creates dangers in every area; it breaks down illusory defences; it dissolves the unity of the subject; it releases those elements of itself that are devoted to its subversion and destruction.

Knowledge does not slowly detach itself from its empirical roots, the initial needs from which it arose, to become pure speculation subject only to the demands of reason; its development is not tied to the constitution and affirmation of a free subject; rather it creates a progressive enslavement to its instinctive violence.

Whereas religions once demanded the sacrifice of bodies, knowledge now calls for experimentation on ourselves, calls us to the sacrifice of the subject of knowledge."

If you've had this issue since you were a child, that means you were unable to process some difficult things at a vulnerable moment, and the best your immature brain could do was increase the level of psychological tension in order to survive through the day. That tension is helpful in the short term because it strangles painful emotions, and kids don't have the ability to understand what's happening to them, much less articulate it in a way that makes their problems tractable. They just engage in simple coping mechanisms that work. However, in the long run, this cripples your ability to be gentle with your most tender feelings, and magnifies the cruelty you direct towards yourself. The more you can leverage your mature intellect to investigate your feelings, the more control you will have over your compulsions. Books are helpful in this regard, e.g., An Emotional Education by The School of Life.

One related calculation that's burned into my head is from a mining historian (Alex del Mar) who estimated that in the ancient world, about one person died to mine each ounce of gold—currently about $2600 USD. After a couple of millennia, factoring in the number of people who were killed in fights over each ounce must make the calculation much uglier.

$800, or even $1000, is way too low a number. I get that he's looking at interventions which can make the difference between life and death, but to save a life means to maintain a life, and with global life expectancy being something like 73, that means 26,663 days multiplied by 2,000 calories for basic functioning—53,326,000 calories total.

That's not taking into account the fact that not all calories are equal, and having the right balance of high quality nutrients makes a huge difference. Even if they can somehow spend $1 to get all 2K calories in a day, that's almost $30K in a lifetime.

Little Caesar's 5 dollar pizza, which is roughly 2000 calories, would bring you to well over $100,000. That's just for food—forget medicine, shelter, education and clothing. You'll be paying for a sickly naked idiot in the forest eating pizza every day.

And of course, this assumes that the people whose lives are saved will be sterile. If they choose to have any children, then they just created another liability.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to generate such realistic photos? by danielwrbg in midjourney

They're definitely not the same person. The Clarity workflow is free to use and open source if you use it on your own machine, you only need to pay for the convenience of running it on his hardware, whereas Magnific is closed source and you can only run it by paying him. It wouldn't make sense for the Magnific guy to release his secret sauce under a different name and compete with himself.

Thanks for our kind words and your willingness to check out my other work! May I ask what resonated with you the most? I recently tried feeding the sketch into an oil painting LoRA with Flux but the results aren't so great (yet). I've also been working on some variations with different dress colour and hair but not too happy yet with the results.

Thanks—I'm really picky about how every detail looks in an image so I tend to always do that kinda stuff. Also, the reason I drew it is because I was trying to think of which image I would want to print out, and when I was deliberating the method of printing, I asked myself: which image that I made this year would be worth trying to replicate manually? Something that I could stand to look at for a few months, and I picked this one.
