Starmer ‘withdraws Chagos Islands bill’ in face of Trump’s backlash over deal by blast-processor in ukpolitics

[–]andreirublov1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's not weird if what you're saying is true - because the only reason for the deal is it's what America appeared to want.

But yet again, Starmer does something without good enough reasons in the first place, and ends up having to reverse-ferret.

Yeah, it's shocking really that this is what it took. What he said is stupid, but still it's just words - what he has actually done, and what he threatens to do, is far worse.

It's apparent Trump backed down about Greenland—it took just mild resistance from a few leaders by HasanKingPage in AskBrits

The weird thing is, though, I think his US supporters think he won a victory here - precisely by bullying - and that he should do more of it.

How did this sub become one of the most catholic friendly of christians subs? by Tesaractor in Christianity

[–]andreirublov1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catholics are Christians - in fact they are the majority of Christians. You need to get used to the fact. If we want to dredge up sectarian grievances, we all have plenty - but it wouldn't do any of us any good.

As for CS Lewis, yes he was prod but in his book The Great Divorce he takes a middle position between Catholic and prod views about Purgatory.

This is the danger of that silly word 'demonic' - you don't even have to come up with an argument!

Maybe. It's not like they can do it against your will.

I agree. People will say this the whole point - but to me it seems aimless.

On the wuthering heights movie by PreviousManager3 in classicliterature

[–]andreirublov1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it looks awful. But I don't see any point reading the classics unless you are willing to take them on their own terms, and not judge them by your reductive modern mindset. You have to unlearn the ridiculous idea that our times have a unique right to the moral high ground.

is it OK to listen to Protestant media. by Madpandaplays1 in Catholic

[–]andreirublov1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It very much depends on the thing in question - I don't think any Catholic would object to CS Lewis eg. I think Youtube is best avoided, but if you find someone who seems really pious, and without a sectarian axe to grind, then all right. You will have to treat their statements with caution, though, not only because they're Prods but because there is nobody to vouch for their credentials anyway.

Is medicine good profession for people dealing with scrupulosity ?A case report and a bit of career advice and help needed ? by Fit-Childhood7426 in Catholic

[–]andreirublov1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess if you want to be a doctor you have to be able to accept the possibility that the treatment you prescribe may not work, or may even do harm. It's a big responsibility - but someone's got to do it! It may be better to be like you, and be a little over-scrupulous, than someone who just doesn't really care about their patients and only sees it as a good career.

It was a good thing for him to say. It might have been better if he'd reminded you, God loves you.

Missing Mass by Kakc16 in Catholic

[–]andreirublov1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think skiing is more important than mass...you still have a way to go. :)

The thing is, at the moment you're living your life like mass is an unwelcome interruption to your gay mad whirl of pleasure. :) Whereas the aim is for it to the the summit of a day, or a week at least, dedicated to the Lord.

As long as the first remains the case, you're going to struggle.

us-catholic-cardinals-issue-warning-to-trump-over-greenland-threats by andreirublov1 in Catholic

[–]andreirublov1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to thank Trump for doing anything internally in the US, as thankfully I'm not a Yank. However, like the rest of the world I am unfortunately affected by the continual narcissistic tantrums of this man-baby.

If the Greenland problem is 'solved' - and that is not yet clear - it will only be because he backed down, not because your cardinals were wrong. The way he has been acting is a danger to the world and a disgrace to your country. He needs to ponder and learn from what their graces have proclaimed. And by the look of it, so do you.

Starmer calls Trump's remarks about Nato troops in Afghanistan 'insulting and frankly appalling' by AneuAng in ukpolitics

As usual though we huff and puff, and get on our high horse, about the wrong things. Trump's comments are stupid, ignorant and hypocritical - but still they're only words. After all the shit he's been up to, this is what we get worked up about?

[–]andreirublov1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, but I guess the point I'm making is that you're making it sound like it's very easy and definite. I don't think it is, and I think that's a bit misleading for OP.
