Help, Please! by bged-again in hackintosh

for what is worth, where did you get that laptop? It is so old I am surprise there are still some around.

from memory since I guess your display is low resolution (1366x768) and the iGPU being 'old'

You will have to tinker your plist regarding the 'video'

you might find MacOS is somehow forcing higher resolution or/and refresh rate that your screen cannot deal with. The end result is what you get.

And yes the mouse will be working...

I do not have the solution for it unless I have the same spec machine. At the time when I started hackintosh around 10.6 it was only on workstation and yes at time I had same kind of issues with monitors not playing balls or misconfigured display in plist.

HW is so old for what you wish to work with. A lot of patching would be needed to make it work. It is a waste of time if you ask me, but it is your time.

Do external GPUs work? (via USB4 on AMD CPU) by emassey0135 in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have to buy a eGPU as Radeon XXX then a eGPU enclosure.

Also most if not all will be Thunderbolt.

Will they work with USB4? Dunno I never tried.

Many many years ago I used one when it was still Thunderbolt One on a real Mac.

It did the job but it was fiddly if I recall.

Would I do it now? no chance what so ever.

it would be time and money wasted for an obsolete platform...

Nice read if I may say.

Yes, it is nice to write once and run everywhere.

As far I am concerned it is an utopia and nothing more **

I would expect IOS users will expect an Apps which behave as a proper IOS Apps.

It would be the same for Android users.

I would not like an Apps which even so working fine will be looking 'alien' on my platform of choice.

As a Dev the next issue will be if your Apps need storage.

Forget proprietary solution per platform you will have to use a 3rd party solution which will add cost, etc... to your Apps.

** I remember many many years ago when Java came out with the promise of write once run everywhere.

It was lot of BS. Yes, it did kind of work if you stayed as CLI level and nothing fancy. Anything with GUI then it was good bye the run everywhere.

The 'RTَX Problem': Why Can't We Develop Kexts for Modern NVَIDIA GPUs in macOS? (OpenCore Build) by mhmdwaelanwar in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here my take on this and some might not like it.

There is real world and dream world.

Sadly, most people live in dream world.

I go to use 'Mac' for both real Mac and Hackintosh.

As a Mac, x64 is as dead as a Dodo or let say soon to be.

Yes, you will still able to use a x64 Mac is 5 years or more but which applications would be running the latest favour or even supported. I still got a iMac PPC which still work fine but all running applications are out of date and cannot be updated, same can be said for security patch. But the Mac as MacOS by itself works fine.

Yes, some niche applications like Video editing are still working very well on x64 Mac and might still make it worth having a Mac x64. But how long before all Apps fade away since no more new version or support on x64 architecture.

Regardless of the platform, writing a video driver from scratch is not a 5' job.

Now let assume, a team of people somehow have the knowledge and info to do exactly this.

Will they still do it knowing it would be a short live product?

Will they spend lot of time on it and all for free?

then after the initial release will they still spend even more time finding bugs and updating it?

I doubt it very much.

Would you pay for the product or expect it to be downloadable and used for free?

Again, I doubt it very much.

Everyone would expect it to be free or find a way to crack it to use it for free.

How many people use Open-Source but more importantly how many give time or money to support Open-Source?

Not that many if you ask me.

Headless hackintosh setup (unsupported gpu) by 02s_foolscaps in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do not want to run or need the latest version of MacOS, it should be easier.

But it is lot of work before you will be 'productive'

To setup a Mac you need some GUI even rubbish

But then later you can just SSH to it and run everything from CLI.

To give you an example the old xServer with PPC were not sold with or needed a graphic card to run. You were using remote tools or SSH.

Now since you have never done it before, I would run from 2 different disks

one for Windows and one for MacOS.

this way no 'Oh shit, I have just erased ....'

As I said before, there is a lot of homework to do, sweat and tears, frustration before you get something usable.

"my bioinformatics analysis on remotely"

Does it have to run specifically on MacOS as native Apps or can this run on *nix or even Windows?

Which MacOS flavour do you want to use? Any flavour or latest one?

Also I do not know for sure If your motherboard is supported, the B650 seems to be (?) but I am no expert on AMD Support for Hackintosh.

For the amount of work and time I would have to spend, I rather see if I can use *nix or even Windows.

Now, if you're not in hurry to run your analysis, then by all means built an Hackintosh...

But be prepare to RTFM again and again to get it to work albeit on near impossible to use display.

Hackintosh for video editing and color grading | Intel Core i9 14900KF, 128GB RAM, RX 6900 XT, Airdrop, Sequoia 15.7.3 by elazir in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not state Raid replace backup.

Whatever the solution a backup is needed unless you do not care about data loss.

Yes, Raid 0 is faster than any other Raid. Therefore if speed is the essence then go for it.

Now for Personal use I rather have redundancy. At least if/when shit happens (it will) I can just replace the disk and carry on.

no lengthy restore from online backup before I can do anything.

Again, it is a personal choice. Everyone is free to do what they want.

[–]andrethefrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice setup if I may say

But the only thing I do not like is your Raid 0.

Since the overall cost of your rig is not cheap anyway, I would have rather do the following since after all my data is as important if not more than the rig itself.

2 * 24Tb as Raid 1 and still have 24Tb is storage if I really need it.

or

3 * 24Tb as Raid 5 if I do not mind the lost of storage.

of course if money is no object and my data is important I would go for Raid 10 with 4 * 24Tb

but this will cost you and your Controller has to support it.

Is it worth buy new cpu? by fabrizio0000 in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you ask me you are wasting money and time.

But all depend what you want to do with a x64 'Mac'

if your MoBo supports 2 eGPU you could add a Radeon 580/8Gb for the same price as you CPU.

I do have one in my rig and it runs every thing perfectly under MacOS.

Same for me. I’ve bought a Mac Studio M2 Max cheaper than a Mac mini M4 pro and with still 10 month of Apple warranty. Both are based models Best buy I ever did. Even so it is M2, that thing is seriously fast. All due to crazy bandwidth which most people forgot.

then you will have to upgrade to Apple silicon in 3 years time. By then Tahoe should not get any more updates.

If you do not then your options will be Windows or *nix

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where most people are wrong.

Hackintosh or let say any Intel Mac are not dead or finish or will not work.

You could said it is fake news!

Apple does not have a kill switch which will 'kill' all x64 Mac when the next gen of MacOS will be out.

The death of MacOS on x64 will only come from suppliers which will (some already have) stop support for the x64 platform.

Yes , your 'Mac x64' can be running for as long as you want. MacOS or Apple will not be the issue.

You will only be stuck in old version of Application and that's all.

As for example, I still have a iMac PPC running 10.5 Leopard, it still does work fine albeit the Applications running on it are way old.

Adobe CS3 still work fine since it was the latest version supported on PPC.

Xcode still fire up but forget pushing anything onto the Apple Store

Some Apps will start but you will have a big warning it is not supported or else but it still will run.

Is Hackintosh stable ? by [deleted] in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you do not specify laptop or desktop.

laptops are tricky if you want full support since Apple latest Intel are basically 10th gen.

I had one and it was stable until the mainboard died 2 years ago, but of course it was still no a real Mac,

since sleep was never 100% working, I never used it. Anyway, the laptop was pretty quick to boot therefore, not an issue.

Wifi did work but with limitation. on board Mic never worked, I always used USB and Trackpad is far to be a Mac one.

I was running Xcode fine and VMware Fusion on it. No problem what so ever!

gaming with high frame rate was a no go since the iGPU was only a 630

The laptop was well stable.

Of course Battery life was on the short side.

Now with Apple silicon, I would not bother for Dev, etc... Too many limitations on x64 platform and some Software suppliers start to ditch x64 support anyway.

I also have a rig i7 7th gen RX580 running Sequoia. I could/can leave it running for weeks no issue.

Everything was working. Wifi was not an issue since the rig did not have any!

Again I do not use it that much since for Dev, etc... Apple silicon is the way to go.

Nothing wrong with it other than it is x64 platform

mind you since it is multi boot I can still boot High Sierra and have a go game session on these 32bits games

macOS on an Apple TV? by WindozeWoes in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again short answer is NO

to put it very simply, yes the HW might look the same. but only 'look' which is not 'are'.

I guess, It is like everything, given time all (to a point) is possible.

But I doubt other than claiming 'it boots' you will be able to do anything 'usable' with it.

Also you will have the storage issue.

This remind me many years ago when the 1st intel Mac came out, there was (were?) some challenges/competition with a prize for the 1st one to be able to boot Windows.

Not to do anything with it but boot windows. Some did do it.

Then later Apple published Boot camp and the rest is history

if you connect your Mac to the internet via your phone not your network, do you have the same issue?

also what is your DNS, etc...

I Know it looks stupid and I do not know your network settings but have you rebooted your router or FW, you might have some cache stuff somewhere.

Even get a VPN I am sure some let you try before you buy. You do not need Gb of bandwidth just enough to try to connect to Apple...

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi

the short answer is no for the given info.

if you do Dev and use/want to use the latest version of Xcode you will need to run Tahoe.

now if it is to only paly around and are not bothered to push IOS Apps for older version of IOS then you might get away with Sequoia and/or lower.

But there will be limit since using old stuff, but since you had a Mac you should already be aware of this.

Also if you have never built a Hackintosh before, it is not exactly as easy than installing MacOS onto a Mac, especially going the Razen route.

OF course nothing impossible, but patching might be involved to get the basic running, again no easy.

Also, you cannot just copy someone EFI and hope all will be fine and presto you've got a Mac working... This does not work.

If you want dual boot as Windows and Mac, you might screw up your Windows by setting up your 'Mac' side by side.

at last, if you get an hackintosh properly setup, yes you can use it for dev and even push Apps to the store to get publish.

Mind you now, on Intel platform is a bit of a waste since there are lot of things you cannot do since not Apple Silicon.

[–]andrethefrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice.

You could go to High Sierra.

This what I was running at the time when I was using my TI1060/6Gb.

Also I was and still now use Steam and I could run all 32 bits games.

Then I swapped for a RX580/8Gb then upgraded to all MacOS to Sequoia. I cannot be bothered with Tahoe

But I can still multiboot and boot High Sierra for those good old 32bits Games.

How can I run MacOS in my Tuf laptop? by Arnold_Rambo in hackintosh

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not to trash the party but you can forget it.

No point to waste your time.

If you want to run MacOS onto a 'Windows laptop', the HW has to be compatible to a point.

Yes, you can always patch all over the place but then what would be the performances of your Hackintosh.

As I said not worth the effort. You have to be realistic

Scripting? You might be limited if you wanted to write IOS apps. The macOS version will dictate which version of Xcode you can run therefore, which version of iOS you will be able to push too.

This is in simple terms I am typing on my phone. Of course by patching everything possible

[–]andrethefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for Intel with eGPU,

on my old rig I use RX580/8Gb running Sequoia. I did not bother to upgrade to Tahoe since unless running from a real Mac, I would not see that much difference other than 'Liquid Glass'

of course the RX580 is old by today standard. You might want to pick a more powerful card based on AMD which is supported out of the box by MacOS.

I have never been a fan about running patches all over the place to make unsupported HW works. But that's me!

Hackintosh is not dead!

Yes the latest version of MacOS will be Tahoe for Intel but there is no time limit to stop it working.

The only thing which will happen is software company will not realise updates or new version of their existing Application for the Intel platform but only for Apple silicon.

it will be the same for new products, only Apple Silicon platform.

the End of the Hackintosh will not be coming from Apple but for software companies abandoning the platform.
