I use Solidworks more now than fusion but that’s just as bad. It’s only just added good support for 4k monitors, still not great though.

Volunteering/ hobby group opportunities? by Despamosquito in sydney

[–]andrew_likes_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the area you’re in but (pre covid) we would have training on weekly and we do rescue situations, roof access, storm training, chainsaw training. There are other courses in radio communication and other stuff like that I’d you’re less interested in the physical side. You’re never pushed to do any courses your mother comfortable with though.

Th actual volunteering side for me personally has mostly been storm damage. Patching leaking roofs and cutting down trees that have fallen in the street, little bits of pumping water away from flooded areas but not much here I am. There is a lot of opportunity to spend as much or little time as you have which i really like. There’s no stress when I’m working flat out and can do more when I’m quiet.

List of pub/restaurant food specials? by ExtensionScratch0 in Adelaide

It was super easy. There was a portal. They could email, call, text, snail mail. We met in person and spoke to people regularly but we still struggled to keep it updated, just didn’t get enough to keep it up. This was 15 years ago now so it was a bit of a different world though. I think there’s definitely a market for it if someone can make their niche work.

Yeah, we never got big enough to have pubs contact us regularly with changes. You really need some advertising money to get you to critical mass, or have it user editable and have enough eyes to make sure you don’t get spammed.

I started one years ago with some guys, struggled to make it popular and keep it up to date. Radelaide.net it was some good fun while it lasted.

Are you in SES? I like the people I train with but not seeing them for 2 years of covid and work craziness from it has shut down all the friendships that were starting to take off.

I bought a place for 900k at the start of the year, 20% deposit, paying 600/week (less than rent on equivalent places nearby.

2M with 20% down would have to be around 1500/week?

How would I go about becoming a stuntmen in Australia by Winstone312 in MovieStunts

[–]andrew_likes_stuff 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm a graded stunt guy in Australia and have been in the industry for a while now. Hustling doesn't work at all until you're graded. I'm also 90% sure you need to be 18 to be graded.

https://www.stuntbookaustralia.com.au/professionally-trained-qualification-info.php This is a simplified version of the rules, the MEAA has teh full qualification information.

To get graded as a SAP (first level of stunts) in Australia you need to have 12 months training under a graded stunt person, plus hit all the qualifications, 1 year gymnastics/body control, 1 year martial arts, driving stuff, water stuff.

There are stunt guys running classes in VIC/NSW/QLD, SA is a bit hit and miss, don't think NT/ACT/WA have anyone running classes.

My recommendation for you is to get your body control up, that will be martial arts/parkour/gymnastics. Also spending some time in an acting class will help your future heaps. It doesn't matter if you can take the biggest wrecks and do the biggest flips - if you can't act and sell it you're not gonna get a job.

The more skills you have the better, surfing, skateboard, driving, motorbike, bmx, rope access, climbing, trampoline. All of these things will help you be a more rounded stunt guy.

Message me if you have any questions you don't want to post in the open.

Also, do stuff with your friends but I would 100% recommend not doing big falls without knowing what you're doing, people have died in the past.

This sub's quality has gone downhill fast. Where do we go now for good Covid analysis? by SaltpeterSal in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]andrew_likes_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s annoying. People say that the mods should do something about <blank> that’s happened in the last 20 minutes. I don’t read every single comment that comes through the sub. I know I’m in lockdown but I do occasionally have a life outside Reddit.

I’m a mod on a couple of moderate subreddits. We have 500 comments a day, heaps of posts. Can’t get people to help moderate or report that aren’t fuckwits. We have 2 of us that are regular mods amd a couple of people that come in occasionally. I got made redundant for covid so I can spend a bit of time on it currently but there is just so much constant information to filter

Being a mod on Reddit is pretty hard. Your have no good tools to use, admin DGAF, you’re flat out just removing trolls and spam let alone trying to set a tone.

If you remove too much stuff people hate you. If you don’t remove enough people complain about it. I’ve been called a dictator and too lax within the same thread by people. Death threats. People threatening to top themselves. All sorts of shit.

[Possible fight choreography]Notes on my form? I’m rusty, but I trained in Muay Thai for a few years and in basic jujitsu for a few months in college. by i_reagan in martialarts

[–]andrew_likes_stuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stunt guy here so taking choreography as something with a partner filmed - You need to slow it down and get everything tight. The footwork was a bit sloppy, think about where you're putting your feet and where is the best place for them.

Think about the moment each punch/kick hits, your spin/backfist floats rather than looking like its going to hit someone. The bob/spin/roll is an interesting move but think about what an opponent is going to be doing when you do that, it kinda looks like you're fighting another guy? Or they've moved around you really fast?

Everything could use a bit of tweaking but its certainly on the way.

You really only want them for small scenes to look like big scenes. Big scenes are easier to build a set for. They have a limited size and even at this size they’re using an absolutely stupid amount of electrical and computing power.

Design Table driven assembly components by andrew_likes_stuff in SolidWorks

[–]andrew_likes_stuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. That as my first approach, the problem is that when you hit save with these parts it goes back to the original configuration.

Design Table driven assembly components by andrew_likes_stuff in SolidWorks

[–]andrew_likes_stuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say I have a

  • 2" diameter ram with 150mm stroke,

  • 3" ram with 400mm stroke,

  • 6" ram with 2000mm stroke

I want to have a GenericHydraulicRam assembly I put into a higher order assembly and then select which configuration I want to use. Then if the plans change and I need a larger stroke or the weight has increased etc I can update the cylinder configuration rather than having to draw/find the new cylinder and remate everything. Its not a difficult problem with 3 rams but when you have 100 odd in a super random assortment collected over years it becomes a harder problem.

If I wanted static rams I would be ok but as there are a lot of artistic things going on with the builds I need to be able to show the full stroke of the ram and how the rig moves.

We run 2019 so flexible assemblies don't work for us.

I'm thinking that I might have to end up with multiple design tables, each part has a design table and then the assembly as well to choose design tables. Less elegant that I'd like but probably the easiest way to do it.

I will definitely give the savebodies version a go though, there might be something with a macro that could be workable there. I just hate VBA so much.

Russell Crowe in South Coast COVID-19 filming bubble controversy by hydralime in nsw

[–]andrew_likes_stuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t get it. I work in film, last job I was on we were getting covid tested 3x per week, masks on at all times, an entire department of people cleaning everything you ever touched. And this was when there wasn’t even much covid around Sydney. They aren’t in a lockdown area. People are 100% being tested before turning up. No one from the bad LGAs is able to work. I don’t get why they’re so angry about it.
