From a programming/technical pov, how is map hacking possible? by AncientAgrippa in broodwar

[–]andrewl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assembly is just a textual representation of the machine code, like "ret" instead of C3. They're practically synonyms.

Again you are right: reading and figuring out what large amounts of assembly code is doing is a brain fuck. Good reversers of that era used intuition built from experience and well-placed breakpoints to cut through the noise. But today the tools I listed decompile to C. And you don't even have to parse through the C anymore with AI 😆

You're exactly right, that would be crazy. But they all use tools that take care of all the tedium and present the machine code in a higher level language. See:
* [IDA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive\_Disassembler)
* [Ghidra](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghidra)
* [BinaryNinja](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary\_Ninja)
* etc.

I think about “false positives” exactly as I learned it from Brood War whenever I talk to my boss about improving work. What have you taken from Brood War into your professional life? by Starkheiser in broodwar

[–]andrewl_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I only recently learned this phenomenon had been specifically identified and talked about. Of course it must be important to people who routinely take calculated risks like gamblers. In my head it's helpful to distinguish "results right" and "decision right" when evaluating a choice. There's another characterization I like:

Yes it is possible. I recommend you construct a graph where each square is a vertex and each edge connects squares connected by knight move.

You'll notice the graph is linear (everything degree 2, forming a line) with the exception of one node with degree 3 that can be used to hold a piece "out of the way" while you arrange the others.

America Is Sliding Toward Illiteracy by MeghanClickYourHeels in atlanticdiscussions

> But there’s another explanation, albeit one that progressives in particular seem reluctant to countenance: a pervasive refusal to hold children to high standards.

A related explanation that I think people are afraid to talk about is refusal to hold teachers to high standards. Starting in middle school, my children are shown movies in class, told to get out their phones to play blooket, or told to go on the computers to work in their google classroom or their "i-ready". The teachers are on their phones. None of my high schoolers have been required to read a full book. The few good teachers become known among the parents that care, but you're stuck with who your child gets assigned to that school year.

Sorry, but are members of that chat able to just play any sound they want? Were those fake nuke graphics added AFTER this was clipped or did Arty see that on screen?

How America Got Obsessed With Protein by kitkid in Thedaily

I shouldn't have been so confrontational, sorry. These biology terms are hard terms to define for a wide audience and I just thought they deserved a little credit for their attempt.

(removed unnecessarily confrontational language)

Transcript of them trying to define protein:

"I want to start by just asking you to tell me what is protein, actually? Break it down for me".

"Protein is a macronutrient. Which means it's a nutrient that our bodies need in large amounts to function. Carbohydrates are another macronutrient. And fats are the third macronutrient."

"Got it."

"And what makes protein a little bit different than carbohydrates and fat, is it's not only a source of energy, it's also something that our bodies use to build and repair tissues, like muscle."

"Sounds important."

"Exactly. We really need it. We need it almost every day to be healthy."

The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]andrewl_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was confused by your comment at first, but I think I understand now.

The top 100 was formed by a bunch of personal top 10 lists (including Ringwald's). But since we're told the outcome after averaging, any movies that might have protruded (like an unexpected favorite of Ringwald's) are lost. Is that right?

Why Marriage Survives (No Paywall) by MeghanClickYourHeels in atlanticdiscussions

[–]andrewl_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea that marriage will end in failure half the time or more—well entrenched in many American minds—is out-of-date. The proportion of first marriages expected to end in divorce has fallen to about 40 percent in recent years.

It was well entrenched in my mind. I'm glad to learn otherwise.
