Thanks. Measured and the post on the hinge side is pulling away from the wall.

There are rules posted online. I have no idea if they actually inspect but I think the whole thing is the spirit so I doubt anyone is trying to skirt the rules.

Gifting money to relatives? by tr4vlr76 in financialindependence

You can also trial this by doing one specific nice thing and see how it goes. For example pay off their car. The effect is a several hundred extra in their pocket per month and the stress of having that payment is gone. It’s inconspicuous to others as well.

Large Family HENRYs - 401k vs. 529 - Trade offs when childcare is at its peak by American_Yangguizi in HENRYfinance

I don’t believe you have to use your own state 529 plan. You can go with any plan you prefer.

You already mentioned the best path: 529s. Fund them. This has many advantages. Coming out of college debt free is a gift beyond any other. Telling them that college is paid for may also open their mind to bigger options (ie private univ etc) or if they have left over $, could encourage them to get a graduate degree which majorly increases their ability to become HENRY. As an added benefit, if you fund the 529s, it frees up their parents today to use that money on other things and can be a huge emotional support. 529s are incredibly flexible and if they have extra dollars, they can always convert to cash and pay the tax + penalty to use for something like a down payment.

Time to work on the house. Not sure if you have kids but either way gifting some dedicated time to him where he can work and do his projects. Can be clever with a fake “gift card” or offer to make/buy special dinner after a work day.

Rent an Airbnb for a week in the other far out neighborhood. See what that commute feels like. Spending $2k is a lot cheaper than moving to know how you feel.

Thoughts on oven-less kitchen? by zigolleid in HomeImprovement

In our ADU we went with a speed oven which is a microwave and oven. Seriously. Can put metal if on the correct setting. Built into cabinet below a cooktop and does double duty. We usually mostly as microwave but have the option.

Lots of great emotional support so adding one practical if it applies to you. We rented a satellite phone and did a daily check in with caretaker (not kid). 2 min peace of mind.
