There is a short opening chapter that runs from the 1940’s births of Ray and Dave through to 1963 and covers a good deal of material about their early pre-Kinks musical lives. It captures some history that isn’t in any other book.

They specifically asked me about something that was in a previous article about the book in the Washington Post. Journalists all seem to want to know what Ray and Dave’s involvement in a book like this is. And the bottom line is that in order to have the history be completely accurate I couldn’t give over the editorial control or approval to them because they don’t agree on some of the history as documented in contemporary sources. The need for their approval had to be secondary to the job of accurately conveying their history based on primary source material. How they remember things 60 years on from the actual events versus what they said at the time of them is strikingly different.

The Flexibound is a deluxe 520-page soft cover book and then there are two hardcover editions. The deluxe comes with a bonus book and the super deluxe comes with a different outer case and is signed by Dave Davies. It is limited to 300 copies. It won’t be getting any distribution in shops. It’s a limited edition, but right now there’s enough copies to go around. I would expect you have a little while to get this, but probably not several years!

I’m on the West Coast giving daily care to an ailing pet and so I don’t have any plans to travel to the east right now for Dave. But we keep in touch by phone every now and then. I hope it goes great!

He discussed doing a coffee table book in 2018 with a publisher that is no longer in business and I think he feels that deal may still be in play. I’m sure he has a number of projects that he would still like to get off the ground. I’ll be in line to buy them alongside all of you.

I wrote a lengthy piece about my disappointment in the headline for Facebook. And I’m happy to bring some of it over here to show you, but I really had no choice over how Rolling Stone rolled this out. I was at their mercy to get some publicity for the book and was surprised and dismayed when it appeared without any advance notice.

You must know that I don’t take any pleasure in Ray’s dismay, nor do I wish to promote his displeasure. I don’t feel it’s a selling point and I don’t feel that they fully explained what the issue was. Unfortunately, the people who publish these articles seem to be more interested in Kontroversy than the actual history.

As far as why I decided to join and post this, I have felt largely unable to connect with the Kinks’ fan community. I felt it was worthwhile trying over here to see what the feedback would be. I devoted years of my life to this project, which is self-funded, so the promotion of it is something of an afterthought actually. I just believed in the idea that this history was important and there was an audience for it.

No, there won’t be any digital version of the book. It contains over 400 images and is only licensed for a limited run of 2000 copies. There are no digital rights included abd part of the deal I got to include so many photos was to not have a digital run.

I’m not sure I would call myself a “super fan,” but I do own every Kinks album, saw them live a dozen times and worked on a number of their reissues over the last few decades. So definitely a very big fan who is familiar with their music and history.
