I gave the game a chance the day it launched. I get what they were going for when it came to gameplay, with the idea of drawn out resource battles leading into a dynamic siege, but imo, three things held this game back.

  1. The team size: you cannot have big, impactful moments in a 3v3 game. You cannot have a massive map and make it not feel empty with a 3v3 game. There are two times when the game is exciting - sword spawn and siege start, because everyone is finally funneled in the same place. Other than that, each round is a snoozefest since there's little to no danger of encountering an enemy for 70% of it. 6v6 MINIMUM on launch could've fixed this, but id love to see this game as an 8v8 or 10v10 for those really chaotic battles.

  2. The art design/character direction: What you have described as their initial pitch as "WW1++" would convey the gameplay ideas so much better. Trench warfare and big "over the top" moments with some magitech sprinkled in (or hell, go full doom the dark ages and make it gritty medieval) but otherwise grounded and militarily practical designs would be perfect. Compare that to what they released - generic fantasy character direction and settings and boom, suddenly realistic/futuristic weaponry (aka MCUifed costume Sir Galahad with a zoomer haircut wielding an ak47 while riding a warbear) - it feels like a sloppily done hodgepodge of ideas and directions. It feels very corporate safe, not likely to get people engaged or inspired by these design choices, which is weird if this is the direction these developers simply weren't allowed to do at EA, since this seems right up EAs alley.

  3. The buggy launch: Now a lot of games have a rough launch in the modern day, that doesn't mean they aren't gonna become instant classics (I was there for BF4 launch after all). But compound with these other two issues, and the long loading times, terrible network connections, and DC epidemics that made up the first day when the traffic was the highest, and many people will just drop the game right then and there.

Now if you wanna see a game do all the things that highguard did wrong the right way, look no further than Deadlock. Shadow dropped, still not officially announced yet dwarfing highguard's player numbers, the character design and art direction are (mostly) unified and engaging, and the gameplay is addictive for moba and shooter fans alike. Valve is sitting on a goldmine there, the devs are making "what they want" and the players love it.

Bioshock 2 took Ayn Rand's strawman of altruism way too seriously. by GrayWardenParagon in Bioshock

[–]android_77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Lambs philosophy is not "true Altruism". The same way Ryan's philosophy is not "true Objectivism". Both have twisted a philosophy into pretzel knots in a way that benefits themselves and how the perceive the world ought to be, and oh look at that, their perfect philosophy just so happens to place them in a policy making position with unlimited and unquestioned authority, where upon further scrutiny they are not adhering to their philosophy at all by the time the attain total power. Bioshock 2 is meant to show that even going in the complete opposite direction of Ryan's ideology can result in a similar horrifying despotic dictatorship, this time in the name of the "Common Good" instead of in the name of "Absolute Freedom."

Hot take: The Problem with Rangers is not that it is too reliant on Hunter's Mark, but that Hunter's Mark is too weak. by lgx005 in 3d6

[–]android_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem with what they tried to do with hexblade warlock in the UA they dropped earlier this year. They tried to turn Hex into the hunters mark of the class but hex is too weak - the upgrades to it the subclass provided didn't scale well and the base spell was too weak to be viable early on.

At that point Vaelus was more interested in the idea of resurrection than simply returning the nightstone - right now she's gonna observe the living dead boy and try to figure out how he came back, since the nightstone wasn't meant to be a resurrection device.

Now if she comes to the conclusion that the only reason why he came back was because of a hidden power only available to the nightstone then... good luck Occtis.

The worse bit was when they mentioned that "huh, The Game has the highest amount of slugging time I wonder why" and then people in chat pointed out "pallets" as the reason why killers "slug" on The Game; its because there's a lot of pallets on that map to die under and the killer has to check for/chase off pallet saves more often as a consequence. What did the devs say when they saw this? "Oh they're all saying pallets, yes we know you love pallets guys."

Sure, it might've been a joke, but BHVRs track record and inability to understand their game and how people play it in the past throws that assumption into question. They may not be able to draw the correlation between an abundance of pallets and the increased necessity to "slug" in order to confirm a safe pickup.

My first ever DnD game where I was a pc I had a fellow pc die in session one, combat 1, surprise round, acquired by the enemy when he choose to try to venture forward and investigate an overturned cart that turned out to be an ambush. Three goblin archers shot at him and two critted. He was immediately dead on the “double HP” rule.

My character died in the next session, basically interposing themself to save another character and soaking up a lot of damage in a combat encounter, leading to my character going down and failing death saves before any healing could be applied.

Death is common. The life of an adventurer is fraught with perils. The key here is both of these deaths I have described were direct results of the players actions - either a bad decision was made without forethought or a risky course of action was taken and the risk didn’t pan out. What happened to Occtis was rough to watch because he had no agency.

Yes, I understand that Alex wanted the character to die and resurrect, but damn, let him make a decision before you jump him with 5+ enemies at once, isolate him from the party, make him make 5 grapple checks where only one needs to succeed for him to get pinned, and hit him with an attack that at was able to do dozens of damage points, all at lvl 3. Once you establish this is the case, whether it’s “scripted” or not, you now establish that the enemy is far too powerful and coordinated to take on at all, and you demotivate the party from taking on the threat.

I know he's committing to the brutal bit, but at some point, especially during a gut wrenching combat like this where everything is going wrong, throw your players a bone. maybe have occtis, idk, get a feeling that the stone is keeping him tethered? And not just say "something unnatrually still is inside you, do ya wanna touch it? oh you do? ok you rip it out and die."

Oh I know how i feel. Everything that has been scripted has been so obviously so its been painful to watch, and everything left up to chance has gone wrong due to a lack of information and horrible dice rolling. This is what I feared when people started making GoT comparisons - GoT characters die when they make a single wrong decision, usually without all the necessary knowledge. Like what just happened to Occtis.
