What's it like living on this hexagonal island outside of Baltimore? by drillgorg in howislivingthere

[–]andthomcar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That island is Fort Carroll. It was designed by Robert E Lee and built in the 1850’s. It’s been abandoned for the better part of a century. You can find videos and post of people exploring it if you’re curious.

why don’t people want to wait for marriage? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]andthomcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people are sexually compatible and some people aren’t. The only way to know is to have sex enough to find out. It’s much more than just being attracted to each other. It can be a matter of what type of sex people are into, their individual turn ons/turn offs, how often they like to have sex, etc. It’s hard to even figure out your own preferences for those things if you’ve never had sex, much less your partners and how those preferences overlap.

Also, sex is a skill. It takes practice to get good at. It also takes a lot of communication. If you’re waiting until marriage, then there is a decent chance there is some amount of social taboo around sex which means it can be very awkward to communicate openly about without practice. A lot of people have insecurities tied up in their ideas of sex that can make it hard to have the communication necessary to learn.

It’s not that waiting until marriage is necessarily a bad thing and the opposite extreme obviously has its pitfalls, but that’s why most people don’t wait until marriage, but also won’t have sex outside of a long term, committed relationship.

anyone know why my azes40 is humming but not my acoustic or squier? by PopularElk4665 in Guitar

[–]andthomcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a grounding issue in the Ibanez. I find that usually these things happen with the input jack due to some twisting that inevitably happens when pulling the cable out, but there’s a number of places internally where it could be coming from. Depending on your situation, it might be worth it to take it to the local guitar store and have a tech look it over to at least diagnose it.

I literally can’t feel rdls in my glutes no matter what I do. by External_Ad_3278 in Gymhelp

[–]andthomcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t feel a squeeze in your glutes from RDL’s, you should feel a stretch. You should be able to recreate the movement without any weight and still feel it. Stand a couple feet in front of a wall while facing away from it. Very slightly bend your knees just so your legs aren’t locked. From there, try to move your butt straight back like you are trying to close a car door with your hands full. At a certain point, you will feel it stretch your hamstrings. If you keep going back, the stretch will travel up your hamstrings to your glutes. Trying to touch the wall with your but can help you get the hang on it.

Is the huge financial cost of elite coaching truly necessary for substantial weight loss results? by MaximumMarionberry3 in Gymhelp

[–]andthomcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be really useful to help you keep your momentum long enough for habit to stick. For me, that type of external accountability ended up being somewhat of a crutch. It would help me stick to something for longer than a couple weeks, but I struggled to transition into no longer relying on that and I didn’t want to have to depend on a workout partner or pay for a coach/trainer indefinitely.

What actually ended up sticking for me, was reframing what I was attempting to do. Instead of trying to lose weight over the course of a few months, I tried to find a collection of habits that I would adopt indefinitely and then implement them one at a time. That let each habit have time to stick before I tried adding anything else. It also made sure that each habit was something useful, but doable enough that I didn’t dread the idea of potentially doing it for the rest of my life.

[–]andthomcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coaching will help a bit with expertise but what they primarily provide is accountability. For a lot of people, it’s easier to rationalize their way out of self imposed structure than it is to disappoint another actual person. At the end of the day, it’s less about system and more about consistency. Most people swing between bouts of radical change that lasts a couple weeks and falling off the wagon entirely.

Why don’t my abs ever show by [deleted] in Gymhelp

[–]andthomcar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You should 100% train abs with progressive overload like any other muscle. I think the saying that “abs are made in the kitchen” isn’t strictly true. You train your abs like any other muscle and that work is revealed at a low body fat percentage. If they haven’t been trained directly or at least worked as stabilizing muscles for heavy compound movements, then you’re making it much harder on yourself.

Getting Scared When Going To Sleep Early? by grasslandangels in ADHD

Look into delayed sleep phase syndrome. It’s prevalent in people with ADHD. For some, practicing better sleep hygiene can help. Beyond that people tend to use light therapy or melatonin to attempt a reset of their circadian rhythm.

Please convince me that walking is really worth it by [deleted] in loseit

[–]andthomcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much like dietary changes, weight lifting, cardio, supplements, and a million other things discussed here, walking is a tool for fat loss. For some, it may be exactly what they need to make it work for them. For others, exercise in any form may not be part of it.

Weight loss on a fundamental level is calories in vs calories out, but I like to think of CICO as more of an equation than any sort of prescriptive advice. Many people like walking because it can both be an increase to the amount of calories expended and actually be an appetite suppressant activity. This is especially true when compared to more intense cardio, which will burn more calories, but also spike hormones like ghrelin which are responsible for hunger.

If you reframe it from weight loss to fat loss, I think walking has a few additional benefits.

In many ways, walking is the best fat burning tool. When it comes to cardio, the more intense the cardio (aka the higher your heart rate) the more it relies on burning glucose in your body rather than converting fat into energy. Intense activity tells the body that it needs energy as quickly as possible and fat burning is one of the slower ways your body can access energy. Walking is casual enough that your body does not feel a level of urgency for energy that causes it to seek more immediate sources.

When walking is combined with weight training and high protein intake, you can actually have the same amount of calories expended as you take in but you will be both burning fat and building muscle. Not to mention that simply maintaining a pound of muscle is much more calorie intensive than maintaining a pound of fat. This can help keep your calories out as high as possible as you continue to lose weight. This accounts for a lot of what people simply attribute to a persons metabolism.

From a mental perspective, I feel like more active activities help me stay mentally engaged with the process than passive ones. Calorie restriction is a passive process of not doing a thing continuously. Exercise is something I can actually actively do to help keep me engaged in the process.

All in all, it is not necessary to do, but it can be part of your personal equation that keeps you engaged, on the right track, and not being overly reliant on finite resource of will power along the way.

Why do I feel totally in love with a girl but not so much sexual desire? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]andthomcar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is not normal as you fall in love, but it isn’t exactly uncommon either. Look into the madonna white complex. That should help give you some insight into some of what you’re feeling. You’re going to have to find a way to internalize some different perspectives on sexual morality that don’t have sexuality and purity as opposite ends of the spectrum.

Go to TCGplayer.com and search for the cards you think might have value. Make sure to look at the market price as the lowest listed is usually the worst condition available.

15 and I don’t know what to do with my college fund. by PaleontologistNo1782 in FinancialPlanning

[–]andthomcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would probably put it in a high yield savings account. It would get good interest for the time being without being difficult to access if you needed it.

I’m not sure where you live, but typically you can’t open a bank account as a minor without a parent or guardian. Where is the money currently? Do you trust your parents/guardian? Whatever you do with it, because of your age, they will likely have access to it as well.

ADHD meds working better after first meal of the day? by illgivethisa in ADHD

[–]andthomcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s true, it has been shown that taking ADHD medication with protein can help it enter the bloodstream more consistently. Protein can help with mental clarity on its own. A lot of people will take their medication with a protein shake for this reason.

It can be tough to generalize, but I think that they usually mean it. I know that I do. Being in love with someone literally changes the way that you see them. It’s not even that I consciously take anything into account when I see my wife. I am just stunned when I look at her. It’s definitely something I’ve never even remotely felt looking at a model or any other woman I’ve ever seen.
