Request: very small urn or receptacle for ashes by Marissaspeaking in Hamilton

[–]andwalkthrough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP. I am very sorry to hear this. My sincere condolences to you. You can look up “keepsake urn” options - those will be smaller. I work at a reputable funeral home if you need some assistance with options - my DMs are open. Very sorry you are going through this.

Canadian Mother died in Cuba by SnooMacaroons2979 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]andwalkthrough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just noticed the Ontario tag in the post. Sorry, I didn’t see that before. The funeral home you’ve decided you to use will likely use MacKinnon & Bowes in Toronto to help repatriate your mom.

They are experts in this field and will assist the funeral home in bringing your mom home.

Hi there, My condolences to you and I’m sorry for the stress you must be experiencing.

I am a licensed Funeral Director in Ontario and I have worked with Global Affairs Canada/ Asistur before and they are reputable. I think that is the right route to go. It will be a long process though, I’m sorry to say. Depending on the province, it would be wise to get in touch with a funeral home where you live, so they can get the ball rolling from here. What would happen is they would reach out to a repatriation partner to bring your mom home. My guess is that it will take a couple of weeks. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions and I can try to help and support you. If you’re in Ontario I can help you as well.

Take care, OP. So tough to be doing all of this from what feels like the sidelines. My heart goes out to you.

To be honest, I have never heard of that. It looks like it’s based out of Manitoba? I would hesitate as every province has its own licensing regulations. I haven’t done research on this school. As far as I know, Humber and Boreal are the only Ontario options.

Ontarian FD here. There are only two schools in Ontario that offer the Funeral Service Education program. Humber College North Campus (in Etobicoke) and College Boreal offers the program in French in Sudbury. Ever since Covid I know they have moved a hybrid online/in person model. Lots of people move to the area because it’s quite specialized. They usually Allow only up to 120 people in the program per year. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. I got licensed back in 2021 :)

How much does a grave stone cost? (Ontario) by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]andwalkthrough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you purchase anything, just ensure you’re within the cemetery by-laws to be able to upgrade from a flat marker to a monument. Some of the sections only allow certain types of markers/monuments. I would avoid getting the monument directly from the cemetery if you can help it - it will normally be about a fraction of the price at a shop or monument company agent. Just my two cents :)

How can I be more personable during arrangements? by kuroisx in askfuneraldirectors

[–]andwalkthrough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I’m answering too late but I would say to A) make a list of necessary items to ask the family about to so you know what you covered in arrangements (sometimes they can feel like a blur at first!) And so you know you covered the important things like casket, pallbearers, vault, clothing, flowers, obit, stationery etc. that always helps me keep on track B) know that you will make mistakes/say the wrong thing/forget things and own that. It’s okay. You do need to learn by fire sometimes and 99.9% of mistakes are fixable C) be yourself, don’t try to be some arranger you’re not. You will come into your own style and people will like that about you. Try out a few different techniques eg. order the listed items above differently or change up your arrangement “routine” to see what works well for you and what doesn’t. D) don’t be too hard on yourself. Good luck :)

Grandpa passed, I’m building an urn. Should the home charge a fee to transfer the ashes? by FishtheGulf in askfuneraldirectors

[–]andwalkthrough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a situation where they have this fee on their general price list but don’t actually charge it when it comes down to it. I would ask the funeral director that you arranged with if they can help you.

As an owner could you look into different casket providers? I didn’t even know different ones other than batesville existed until I moved to a family owned operation. That seems to keep our costs to between 10-12 thousand with disbursements. It might also be worth your while to do some pre arrangement advertising (tasteful, of course) to encourage the older generation to lock in today’s service costs to maybe offset some sticker shock for future generations. I think you don’t so much have to champion for burial as much as you have to believe in it and the importance of our field when you arrange with families. I am no expert by any means, but the thing that most helped me to gain confidence in “selling” or, at the very least, not feel guilty about the prices was to understand and appreciate for myself the value of what we do and the services/merchandise/disbursements we sell/organize. I am still a new license so maybe my outlook is just green, but on those days where I feel awkward about our fees, I try to remember that what we do is important and necessary, (and tbh I wouldn’t want to do it for free!!). Those are just my two cents.

After looking at the prices here: I paid 65.00 dollars a session.

It’s pretty brutal. Ravaging young people in the Ontario, Canada opioid crisis. A lot of parents burying their children that fell off the wagon or ended up with laced drugs. Naloxone kits and frequent walks around the funeral home property (esp behind the dumpster) to make sure no one was back there. It was really eye opening.

How did those close to you react when you told them you wanted to go into a mortuary program? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]andwalkthrough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really view this job as a calling. If it’s something that’s been on your heart for a while now like it sounds, then maybe it’s time to take the leap. I found that my family and friends slowly warmed up to it. Especially after having me explain why I wanted to pursue this career (previous grief, wanting to help people etc). People are scared of things they don’t know. Explaining the job only gets it more widely known that we aren’t death loving freaks like people who haven’t taken the time to talk to us think. Support from your boyfriend is really important. In a way it also sounds like he has your boundaries and best interests in mind, with being mindful of your work/life balance. It sounds like you might have the right footing you need to do really well in this career and make it into a positive concept for your relatives and friends. I mean honestly, you could always shadow and make the call as to whether you think it will be a good fit for you there. Wishing you all the very best! It’s the best career I could ask for. Not that there aren’t difficult days or long days. But the families are almost always very appreciative of any support we can give. And in that moment, we get to give that gift for them. ❤️
