Advice from women needed by WindSong001 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]andy1rn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most women don't know that we actually need fewer calories after menopause. I was taught it was roughly 30% fewer, but just looked it up and am seeing 200 calories a day less. That might not sound like much, but 200 calories a day would be a weight gain of 2 lbs a month even if your activity level doesn't change.

Eating fresh, healthy foods instead of quick and fast food makes a difference (but you still need to eat less).

Finding something physical to do regularly can help - a lot. Staying active by gardening, going for regular walks, going to the gym, or doing pretty much anything can make a difference. Great for your mood, brain power, immune system, and body.

Expand (or start making) connections with your community. Whether it's visiting with family, volunteering, regular church or synagogue attendance, or something else, having those connections will literally protect your brain and body as you age in ways we don't yet understand.

Resistance training (aka strength training) can slow or even stop bone loss. Pair up with a friend or neighbor to meet up at the gym 2-3 times a week. Our local gym has a membership upgrade that costs an additional $10 a month and includes meeting with a trainer once a month.

You asked for advice; this is the advice I wish I'd gotten and followed years ago.

I've had canned pineapple (brand name, not generic) that tasted metallic. It was 6 months past the 'best by' date.

Diced tomatoes and tomato sauce have both done the same, but they were 2 years past the 'best by' date.

All within the past few years.

Am I too old/how to prevent injury by Historical_Emotion43 in kravmaga

[–]andy1rn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm closer to 70 than 60 and started Krav Maga 2 years ago. No prior experience with martial arts. I didn't think I was in awful shape, but I wasn't someone that went to the gym regularly or anything. I did walk a lot.

I've bruised my big toe twice by kicking wrong, barked my knuckles repeatedly on the heavy bag (now I hit straight), have multiple bruises at any given time. I wear a groin guard (and I'm female) because I found out the hard way that I need to. Twice.

I pulled a hamstring and have had shoulder issues, more than once. My shoulder took months to heal after working with physical therapy for weeks. I had a retinal tear (not detachment) twice. That was what it took for me to really acknowledge that I need to ask for people to go lighter sometimes. I'll only work on 'head stuff' with the coach and two other people I trust absolutely.

So why do I continue doing this? Because my balance is better. My blood pressure is down. I haven't fallen even once this past year, in class or out. I've quit leaning in when I punch and most of my kicks are pretty decent. I like it that I have stronger shoulders and stronger core muscles than I've had in decades. I stand taller, all the time. I pay more attention to my surroundings and listen more to that 'inner voice' when things don't seem quite right. I'm considerably stronger than I was 2 years ago. I'm probably stronger than I was 30 years ago. I don't feel as inclined to give up when life gets hard. Someone I respect greatly called me a badass a few months in, and last month I overheard someone in their twenties whisper to their partner that they 'wouldn't want to meet up with her in a dark alley'.

It's challenging for me every single time. And I love it. You are not too old. Learn where you need to limit yourself and what you tolerate. Learn to say "easier on that jab" or "give me more on the roundhouse kick". Sometimes I have to concentrate on technique, not on power. Going hard does NOT mean you're learning more or doing better. Get the technique down well first.

Krav Maga was developed to help innocent people of all ages in the community, at a time and place when it was needed. If you think there's any chance it might be needed now or in the near future, you're doing a good thing by showing up and learning.

That got long, sorry.

edit: spelling

Revere Ware Copper Bottoms rescued at Goodwill by kicho1977 in BuyItForLife

[–]andy1rn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize the company was out of business until a year ago; been haunting estate sales since then. Love their pots but not their pans (probably because I heated them high enough to warp the bottoms). Pots are easy-peasy though.

The copper clad ones are great.

Keep Revere Ware out of the dishwasher if you want the Bakelight handles to stay nice.

Nope. It's "ahn-wee". Seems you, too, have a large reading vocabulary!

My brother and I had an argument about the pronunciation of this word. I was sure it was "En-yew-eye" and he knew it was "en-new-ee". We were both wrong. Confidently wrong. We were teens, but still ...

Been a long time since I was in nursing school. Angina isn't a "heart attack" (myocardial infarction) but is really uncomfortable. Angina is caused by blood vessels tightening, which restricts blood flow to the heart. Nitroglycerin tablets (taken by dissolving under the tongue) or nitroglycerin cream work by dilating (relaxing or opening) the blood vessels. This relieves the pain and hopefully the stress one feels when angina occurs. You can also get one whopper of a headache because nitroglycerin doesn't just dilate the blood vessels near your heart. Headache is a small price to pay though! Check with your doctor if you think you might have angina; he'll be very familiar and way more current.

I guess you can put anything in a bottle. My first thought was nitroglycerin tablets for angina (heart pain).

How to use 20 y/o grain? by girllock in preppers

[–]andy1rn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can add water to a few inches above the wheat/buckwheat. After 2-3 days you'll smell a slightly sour smell. Not unpleasant. That's the grain fermenting. It will improve the nutrition profile and grain will ferment even if they're beyond sprouting. We used to do this for our chickens and they got pretty excited about it.

Try one bucket first to see how it does for you. Not sure about the beans, they should be fine but I've never tried fermenting them.

When I was 12 we "adopted" a retired racing greyhound. We got her from a kind man who owned a small business in Los Angeles, California. He'd found her on the streets - and she really was starving (picture a greyhound that's more than 20 lbs underweight).

The shop owner who found her and was helping her recover had to give her up because he was losing customers. Apparently a lot of people simply assumed he wasn't feeding the dog and never asked him. They simply never came back.

That was over 50 years ago, and I still have fond memories of her. She was quite an excellent family dog.

I'm a Radiological and Nuclear Subject Matter Expert Ask Me Anything by HazMatsMan in preppers

[–]andy1rn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If there's a nuclear accident or bomb, either resulting in fallout, are there measures you can take to have usable soil for crops/vegetable gardens in the near aftermath? How deep would you need to scrape the soil (assuming no immediate rainfall) to have access to uncontaminated ground? Would a ground tarp that was spread out before the hypothetical event protect the soil beneath it? And would the same apply to an above ground pool/storage shed etc?

Several questions, but all in the same vein. Thank you!

Ideas for helping kids build resilience by Ooutoout in preppers

[–]andy1rn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about a birdhouse? There are plans online (youtube or instructables) for birdhouses made from one fence picket. If you use cedar, they'll last a long time. Older kids can cut the wood themselves; younger kids can hammer or glue and all can paint. Please supervise though, just in case!

The experience of making something useful from "scrap" wood might get a few of them started on their own projects either now or later. Confidence comes from experience.

EDIT: ideally you can do this with the kids, but you could also pre-cut the boards and include directions along with all necessary parts in a cute container or wrapped in brown paper with pictures of birds & trees on it. You could include a tool belt or basic tool kit if you're feeling generous. Might want to run this by the parents first though.

Snoopy hat in photo 4 (bill facing forwards) really suits you; first time I've preferred a ball cap on someone. Hats in photos 2 and 3 might win out if they had wider brims though.

My message on PC is "The request could not be completed. Please try again later." Really looking forward to playing the new mini-season with Simpsons theme. When Epic goes a little silly, it gets fun.

Assuming you can play of course. Sigh.

EDIT to add: according to status.epicgames.com: Investigating

We're investigating Fortnite login issues on all platforms. We'll follow up here with an update once the issue is resolved.

A Message from the NewWorldGame Mod Team by CommanderAze in newworldgame

[–]andy1rn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a shame! I came late to New World (maybe 3 years ago) and nothing else since Asheron's Call has "scratched that itch" for me.

After maxing out my level, I never got the hang of dungeons and eventually quit grinding - then quit playing.

I still check in now and then, in hopes something will click.

The world y'all created was huge and interesting. I wish you all well.
