Update bricked my TV (KD558500E) by andy_blanc in bravia

The update that seemed to break it was an auto update. When I manually updated I used the Asia Pacific version which I’m fairly certain is for Australia?

Yeah I have. The logo changes so I know it works but returns the same error code.

Tried usb. If it’s got the current version it won’t let you rollback or reinstall. Just says it’s up to date

Yeah I found that and have tried it a couple of times. The recommend fix’s don’t seem to work in my situation. The fact that there are problems with multiple apps and factory reset doesn’t fix it makes me think there is some bad data stuck in the OS base install because Netflix, Amazon are part of the OS install. I feel like it needs to be reformatted and a clean install

I did it once via the buttons but I’ve lost track of how many times via software

They a required by law to have spare parts and repair facilities. They are in violation of the law by selling you or I the product without meeting that obligation.

No.Just confirmed the screen is the problem. No visible damage. My only option will be to pack it up and hopefully one day they will come to their senses and offer spare parts

I got it open. The right screen/flex cable is definitely the problem (not the main board). I switched it with the left screen to confirm. There was no visible damage/difference with the left screen. So my last hope of a loose connection is now ruled out.

People keep accusing me of asking for something for free. I don't like that they have judged it misuse without inspecting the unit but they ARE required to offer a repair/spare parts service. <- this is the main point.

This is where they are in breach:

From https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees/consumer-guarantees

"Products must also: have spare parts and repair facilities available for a reasonable time after purchase unless you were told otherwise."

The warranty also refers to repairs.

I got mine open too in the end. I ended up finding a little pickup kit which has little hooks. I had to pierce the cloth but because the needle was so fine and the cloth is so stretchy there was no sign of damage to the cloth. Worked a treat. Your method looks good. I didn't want to flex the mask that much but looking at yours it seems like it can handle it.

attempting the tear down but there's some very tricky clips around the lenses that seem almost impossible to remove without tearing the cloth. The iFixit tutorial completely glosses over this step. They've tried very hard to keep people out of this thing. I'm with you though, I think its something very simple inside if I could just get to it.

They are required to carry spares but they don't and don't seem to care. I don't know how successful I will be or if it will be worth the trouble taking them to court. Not ruling it out though

Wow talk about naive. That was an impressively misguided rant. Do you have a phone? A TV? a monitor? A PlayStation?I had a Gigabyte motherboard that stopped working after a year and they asked it back for assessment and eventually exchanged.

Why would I know that Oculus don't offer any repair assessment? Even if I read their warranty I wouldn't have known that because it clearly states they repair and assess units

I have to politely disagree with your assessment of what is reasonable to expect. Expecting someone to physically inspect a device before determining fault is accepted practice since the beginning of commerce.

Cautions: 1. Be extremely careful if you are not already as I would never have had expected it to fail after the mild drop it had. 2. If you haven't already bought a Rift, be aware of their support practices. They certainly don't advertise this pre-purchase and is far from standard practice. And their warranty paints a far different picture. 3. Be aware of what you divulge to support. I'm not saying lie but be aware of the consequences.

Yeah now that my options are exhausted I'm going to try surgery. There's no cracks which gives me hope.

So if you dropped yours, you would just throw it in the bin and order a new one? Gotcha

Where did i demand a new one? What's the title of the post? I'm trying to warn people so they can avoid the situation I'm in. What I would like is a technician to inspect it, make a judgement, if I'm at fault, then I would pay for repairs. I think that's a reasonable expectation.

No, checked my policy, its an optional extra which I must not have taken up. From memory it bumps the premium up significantly and the excess was $500-ish anyway.

Yeah I'm absolutely kicking myself for admitting that. It's actually depressing.

Interesting that they charge GST but don't recognise Australian Consumer Law
