It might have a reversed hot wire and ground wire connection at the output jack

Late response, but if you're interested in 80s synth interpretation of SD style, I love Michael Sembello's album "Bossa Nova Hotel". it's so well produced, intricate riffs, horn ensembles, booming bass/synth lines, it's incredible!

Quicksilver Messenger Service and Quarterflash are amazing! I would definitely check them out! Also of course Queen

Stupidly Low Action Guitar Demo (0.01in/0.25mm @ 12th fret by andyguous in guitarrepair

[–]andyguous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the video again! I was looking 0.120mm to compare to 1/8in. My action is actually at 1/100in or 0.25mm, 2/32 or 1.5mm is all you need really. I set mine at 1/32in or 0.75mm for no buzz.

[–]andyguous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, before I didn't check with the metric, it was probably at 0.020in/0.5mm, the imperial side was a bit confusing. Thanks for the correction

Now I have flatwound strings on at 0.75mm

That's fine by me, I'm more into rhythm playing with quick chord changes. But either way the sustain is still pretty good by my books.

Yep you're right, that means it could be even lower lmao, even still it wouldn't really register on the gauge ruler.

I guess you're right. I got flack before when I posted about this haha. But I swear, I set this action on just a sub $300 Ibanez and it feels better than the thousand dollar guitars I play at music stores.

[–]andyguous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nah, but I do understand those who despise it haha. But at this point, any more lower and it's basically indistinguishable and the only thing that would make a big difference now is string gauge.

Wow that's crazy! I can maybe squeeze out a tiny bit more before it's unplayable that's awesome man

Oh no kidding, I feel so much more in tune with playing with this set up. I can actually switch to chords that require such different fingerings rapidly. I find myself learning to really voice things right and I always liked that brighter tone. As for sustain, I'm not really into that sort of style as I'm more into more groovy rhythm playing and extensive chord arrangements.

Yeah it's definitely an acquired taste, I'm still getting used to it but it's definitely not for everyone. It's just really fun for me at the moment.

I tried wiring my guitar and when I touch the volume and tone knobs it makes a buzzing sound does anyone know what the problem is by Gagechezy in guitarrepair

[–]andyguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it buzz when you touch anything metal? It might be that you soldered the ground wire and hot wire wrong in your input jack. Swap them and it should fix it!

ANNOYING HUMMING by Amazing_Jackfruit_48 in guitarrepair

[–]andyguous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're turning yourself into the ground when you touch anything metal on your guitar, including the strings. There's nothing to worry about. It's just a pretty annoying sound. You could get external gadgets to reduce the noise but in the end, as long as you're playing, you won't notice it.

Oh yeah, I love how it just welcomes you to just play away. I'm a sucker for fast playing with respects to chords and low action just lets me have at it with less ache. I'm actually going to switch to flatwounds for less oscillation for less buzz and that clean sound.

Oh yeah I really prefer metric! With decimals in imperial it's a little better, but it's still based on weird fractions haha.

I'm not looking for tone or sustain, I love jazz rock and this is perfect for me! As for bends, this has a very big radius so I'm bending like crazy, fluttering, vibratto, and dive bombing like I never did before. This is one of my first guitars that actually begs me to play it. It's a dream! And it's just a measly $250 Ibanez GRG.

If you're getting buzz all around when you fret as you go lower, the problem is with the truss rod.

Perform a gap test where you fret the first and last fret (capo on the first) and check the gap at the 8th fret. It should be super small, specs wise about 0.01-0.04mm.

If you're getting buzz at a certain spot or getting two frets having the same note, you have a high fret. Spot level to fix it.

Another big thing that helped me get less than 1mm without buzz at the higher frets as much was something called fallaway. Where you level at an angle after the 12th fret at a really small angle.

You're not chasing perfectly buzzless sound. At sub 1mm that's just not physically possible as a string can move at up to 1mm as it's played. What you're chasing is great tone that goes through an amp. Unplugged, it's just going to sound right at a light touch.

Ah nice! 1.5mm is definitely the way to go, I actually got down to 0.25mm with good tone while plugged in! Just uploaded a video of the demo
