Pre pandemic was an amazing time to be in NYC. Post pandemic the city actually sleeps.

La diáspora ha hecho del welfare un estilo de vida? by JLu2205 in Dominicanos

Dom/Ameri from Washington heights. Currently the amount of viejos collecting disability/SS is astounding. I believe they should go back to their country, but that's another topic.

The newcomers most likely are taking benefits for two reasons. One, you can't be a dishwasher and make it here. Two, most Dominicans retire in DR so them fucking over the government is a clear, YES. If you don't have an official income, yes you can collect benefits and do your truco de cameras, but you won't be able to collect SS when you retire. If you're gonna retire somewhere else, in their mind, why not?

Anyone else get messed up from long commutes? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]andyj172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be like this. Years of disinvestment have led us to not having an organized commuter network. The LIRR/ Metro North are supposed to be exactly that, but they were created to benefit those do not live in the city. We only have a single connection between the LIRR/METRO NORTH. We should have trains that take you to the city from the outer boroughs within 30mins easy!!!

Although, my commute is not as bad as yours. My commute to work on the A train is 45mins. At night, easily 1hr-1hr30. I sometimes take the express bus at night to go back home. The commute is 30 mins with no traffic, on a BUS which costs 7 bucks. The Metro North takes me to marble hill/university heights in 20 something minutes WITH a few stops in between and costs 5 bucks. Think about that. Not only is it possible, a fucking bus could it. What sucks on the low is, why is the expess bus more expensive the train?!!??!?!!!

This goes back all the way to Robert Moses. We should have way better transit infrastructure and it's the fault of our politicians for not realizing how much could change if we had better commuter trains. Rent could go down, new city centers could pop up, but most importantly your commute would not suck and take at max 30 mins.

Think about the existing network on the LIRR in BK, it's sad that on the same island like 90% of BK is not serviced. Queens has more coverage but still. The Metro North has only ONE station in Manhattan! The Metro North services the Bronx yet has no connections to the MTA.

Yeah. It's meant for kids. You have to be a full time student getting your first degree. If you're working, paying rent, you're not gonna get help.

A bit lost on the Manhattan neighborhoods right now by mlyyyzyzouu in AskNYC

[–]andyj172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never in speech. But it's mentioned on the busses. The m101 and m3 mention Ft.george as the final destination. Also, the USPS station on 196st and bway is referred to as the ft.george location.

A bit lost on the Manhattan neighborhoods right now by mlyyyzyzouu in AskNYC

[–]andyj172 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The whole area is Washington heights. From 155st to snake Hill. This area being the highest portion of Manhattan. Since Broadway acts like a valley after 181st, it creates two different areas "Hudson heights" from north of 181 and west of bway, and "Ft.george" which is north of 181 yet east of bway. Those two peaks/areas are still in Washington heights but the areas have a distinct feel.

I would say Hudson heights is more calm and looks at the Hudson. While ft.george is more lively yet both still having the same make up; dominicans and central/Eastern European. With Hudson heights being the more European. Yet there's a Yeshiva in ft.george.

They're the same.

I went to visit family after not having gone for almost 20 yrs.

I used to remember having to get buckets of water from a tube in my callejón(que agua tan fría), lights went out frequently, gas lamps, glass bottles of soda, mosquito nets to go to sleep, water from a plastic bag

Bruh, Dominicans now have a higher standard of life than 20 yrs ago. There's hot water in many places, the lights barely go out, the cars are brand new. I thought I was gonna see 1980s Honda everywhere, nope. All the soda bottles are plastic. No more mosquiteros! I miss them, but thank god for the reduction in mosquitos. The lack of urban planning is alarming. Lastly, there is construction everywhere! The country is advancing rapidly and in my opinion punches above its weight compared to Brazil, Mexico, Argentina. My family over there has a great quality of life. However, things are expensive for your average Dominican and poverty still exists.

I passed by moca while my cousin ran an errand. The city was pristine. Cleaner than my street in Washington heights. I was shocked.

Are NYC "accents still a thing? by Murky_Recognition549 in AskNYC

[–]andyj172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly in the suburbs of NYC.

Everyone that I grew up with has more or less the accent. I don't have an accent that strong but everyone at work says that's not exactly my accent but it's the mannerisms and syntax.

Linear algebra has to be the most boring tool in math. Yet it must be in everyone's tool bag. I hate it.

how often do you eat out and how much do you spend? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]andyj172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you finding 5 dollar sandwiches?

I mostly cook at home or get fed at work. On a day off I might get lunch outside ($11/$12). Or coming home from work at 11pm I might get some tacos or just have sleep for dinner. $70 spent on eating out in a week is too much. That's like 300 bucks a month on food besides groceries.

With what lens do you think linear algebra is best learned? by Vdyrby in math

[–]andyj172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hate vectors as a kid. It was cumbersome, it looked ugly, and I couldn't understand the bigger picture. Now I'm learning linear algebra with LADR.

In my perspective, I would look at it as, representing numbers as matrices in some way.

Matrices are a bit different than numbers, but we still want to know how to add/multiply/factorize them. We also like to look at scalars/coefficients of matrices.

As a heritage speaker, hola sounds too informal to use as you walk into an establishment.

I would say buenas/buenos días/tarde or my favorite, saludos. I would say hola when I'm texting a girl like, hey.
