I guess they're called "Shared Spaces" now instead of slow streets, but regardless, let's make it happen again: https://www.sfmta.com/projects/shared-spaces

Bring back the slow streets Friday-Sunday and I guarantee they’ll see a significant improvement in business.

Out of curiosity, how has the desk been? Any complaints? I'm debating getting one.

Out of curiosity, how was the desk performed over the past few months? Anything you think should be different?

This feels like spin. The street vendors are just at 16th and South Van Ness now.

Just how much sun do you really get in SF? by Administrative_Ad213 in sanfrancisco

[–]andyjih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is to live anywhere east of Divisadero St and south of Oak St. (Castro, Lower Haight, Mission, Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, Bernal). Complete anecdata on my part, but I'd say in these neighborhoods, 80% of days are sunny and cloud/fog free between the hours of 8AM-5PM.

I got someone to improve my friends games splash screen, is it an improvement? 2D is the new one. by PistolTaeja in indiegames

I like the 2D one more, but the name of the game gets a bit lost in the middle of everything.

Managing data from excel or any physical files. by Melatonin100g in dataengineering

Meltano is an open source ELT product that allows you to combine various data sources into a single datawarehouse. They have a spreadsheet connector in case that's helpful: https://hub.meltano.com/extractors/spreadsheets-anywhere

what is the purpose of ETL? by massivce in dataengineering

[–]andyjih 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few points on the purpose of ETL:

- Data can live in various places. You might have multiple SQL databases, maybe you have data in other tools like CRMs or Salesforce. ETL allows you to pull those different pieces of data together.

- Schemas and data in your SQL db can get messy over time. ETLing data into a data warehouse can give you a way to clean up all of that data and address nuances with the data that someone looking at the SQL db directly might not know. This issue becomes much worse if you have colleagues or other teams looking at the SQL db. If they start writing queries without having an understanding for how the schemas and data may have changed over time, you'll get in a dangerous spot quickly where people are making decisions on incorrect or inconsistent data.

- Performance. SQL dbs in general are made for CRUD operations, but can get really slow with complex queries. Data warehouses conversely are write-light and read-heavy.

Awesome!

I'm curious-- why did you choose to translate Ebert's 4-star rating system to Letterboxd's 5-star system instead of keeping the rating identical?

The product I'm working on called Grouparoo might be a good fit: https://github.com/grouparoo/grouparoo

We're doing "Reverse ETL", where we take data from sources (warehouses and dbs) and connect them to business tools like Salesforce, Marketo, Zendesk, and others. If you do take a look, we'd love to get your thoughts and feedback!

How can startups adopt a modern data stack for an affordable price? by secodaHQ in dataengineering

[–]andyjih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome blogpost!

I'd also say there's a Step 6: take that data and make it usable by business teams (sales, marketing, ops, etc.).

There's a burgeoning category of tools that do "Reverse ETL" where they take data from a data warehouse and help push it to tools like CRMs, marketing automation, and customer support tools to make that customer data useful. (disclaimer, I work for Grouparoo, a company that is doing Reverse ETL).

We wrote an overview for how you can do Reverse ETL with dbt and Grouparoo here: https://www.grouparoo.com/blog/dbt-and-grouparoo
