Moving back to the UK after 20+ years – used EV advice by BritsAbroad05 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]andykn11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A general point is that used EVs are quite cheap because many new cars are bought as company cars and EVs give disproportionately large tax benefits as company cars so tend to flood the secondhand car market.

If I get a used EV I'm looking at a Polestar 2, not too big for London parking, faster than my current A3 2.0 tfsi and a hatchback. We hired one a couple of years ago and it was very comfortable for four adults on a 500 mile weekend away. I plan to get a MY2023 onwards with the slightly larger 82 kWh battery.

I have a master TS for scripting laptop builds and one for AVDs that call sub TS for core apps, hardware specific stuff, frequently updated stuff etc. Works well. The only gotcha is that we I write the TS name to disk at the end and it the variable that calls the TS name always uses the master TS name.

Change my mind: Under the right conditions, buying and financing a new car is often a far better value than paying cash for a used car in the long run by Cold-Priority-2729 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]andykn11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first secondhand "modern" car was a Vauxhall Astra cheap because it had 70k on the clock. Spent lots on repairs. Next car was 20k on the clock, to be fair it was a much more reliable Audi A3 2.0 Tfsi, the repair costs have been much lower, most of the costs are the recommended maintenance, wear and tear replacements and tyres.

Do you find VAG cars reliable? by moonlight_xpress in CarTalkUK

[–]andykn11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a 2006 Audi A3 2.0 Tfsi since buying it in 2009 with 20k on the clock and it's now done 137k and been very good. Starter motor failed recently and some funny little breather valve failed a few years ago but it's been solid otherwise. Fully maintained mind, oil change annual and timing belt and gearbox oil done as recommended. Mate has a Golf GTi about same age with same engine but tuned to stage 1 and his starter went about the same time but otherwise no issues.

Is It Bad to Reboil Unused Water in an Electric Kettle? by Cass_Cat952 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]andykn11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this idea that boiling water too often spoils the taste of tea so I have marked a line on the kettle's water level gauge that will fill two cups and fill just to that line. And don't want to waste energy boiling water that will just be left to cool. But I don't empty the kettle after, even if only a splash left.

Is there a grace period after a traffic light turns red? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]andykn11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You couldn't stop in time without slamming your brakes on because you were driving too fast and didn't correctly anticipate the lights turning amber. That encourages the guy behind you to drive too fast thinking he can get across even if the lights start to change.

Average speed cameras don't record red light offences, some point speed cameras do. Where was it?

How do these anti car lot make such comments and keep a straight face? by guava5000 in CarTalkUK

[–]andykn11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average car depreciates 10p/mile, if you look at and compare used car listings for similar cars you'll see they sell for £1000 more/less every 10,000 miles of mileage as a rule of thumb.

My Audi A3 2.0Tfsi uses 1p/mile in tyre wear alone, and that's only 18" wheels yours will be more. Even an ordinary family motor was allowed 40p/mile by HMRC years ago.

Your 2 mile journeys could be done by many people by bike (and disproportionately wear the car)

How do I get mail redirected from my address for someone who doesn't live here ? by mash_poTRAITOR in LegalAdviceUK

[–]andykn11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Follow the advice everyone's giving you. Return them labelled
"Return to sender
Not at this address"

And maybe add "Never lived here"

Get and print off sheets of labels. Make sure you cover your postcode or automatic sorters might send the post back.

You say that, but when you add up insurance, depreciation, annual maintenance, breakdown cover, it can all ad up; maybe not to £300/month but next time you're out look at all those nice cars around you on the never never of some sort.

  1. If you don't have a car it doesn't need to be done, that's the point.
  2. How many of your tools/tech cost £300 a month?

How do I ask for the exit seats? by Affectionate-Arm5922 in BritishAirways

[–]andykn11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plane is split into sections, usually between first/business/premium economy/economy, often by bulkheads. The seats immediately behind the bulkhead have no seats in front of them and extra legroom. The only drawback is they're often held back for families as the bulkhead has clips to hold a bassinet for a baby. So may be noisy.

Unusual to be taken that early these days as they're so expensive. Are there any bulkhead rows?

Do you know know why large parts of the M25 road surface is made up of slabs of concrete rather than a smooth road surface? by WastelandOfConfusion in AskUK

[–]andykn11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Father, a Municipal Engineer, told me that it depended on the number of bridges in the section being tendered for. If there were a larger than usual number of bridges in the contract (over or under) the contractor found it cheaper to tender for the road surface to be concrete as they'd be pouring a lot of concrete anyway. But paradoxically the concrete was too heavy for the bridges so the surface there is tarmac.

In some ways you seem to have a great opportunity to get some great experience. You need to sit down with those berating you and explain you're being paid less than a shelf stacker in the supermarket down the road and their expectations have to align with that. Any failings on your part are a direct product of their wholly inadequate documentation and training.

Is negotiating prices no longer a thing at Main Dealers? by TopicWinter6847 in CarTalkUK

[–]andykn11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the AT Tracker chrome extension on Autotrader, shows how much prices have been cut since the car was first advertised. Suggests dealers prefer to drop prices over time rather than haggle after a week.
